Thanks for telling the truth about this incident. I watched a news clip about this and the anchor was questioning whether or not Icon should recall these because they are unsafe. It honestly pissed me off. ALL planes are unsafe if the pilot is impaired.

With an airframe parachute, angle of attack indicators and the ability to land on water, this is probably as safe as it gets.

@@golffoxtrotyankeehooligan222 Except for the amphetamine....I'm sure he took the amp to wake up, the zolpidem (ambien) to come down and sleep, the morphine to get high, and the fluoxetine (Prozac) and baclofen thrown in there for good measure, cause why not? He was probably stimmed out of his mind on the amphetamine, and combined the other drugs to even it out. Plus, his risk-taking behavior and acrobatics is much more consistent with stimulant intoxication than with depressant intoxication. So no, I don't think he was sleepy at all at the time, just high as a kite and feeling invincible.

In a small plane at 5,000 feet you feel like you're almost standing still relative to the ground, while when you fly close to objects you feel like you're screaming. But especially with single engine aircraft there is safety with altitude, which affords greater choice of emergency landing venues in the event of an engine-out emergency. Flying low over water is legal, buzzing boats and buildings is not. It's not a video game.

My old squadron did a flyover years ago for the Oakland A's / Toronto Blue Jays game at Oakland. I was on the field as the ground coordinator in my flight suit and Roy walked over, introduced himself, and we had a few moments of small talk about aviation. He told me that his father was a pilot, we shook hands, I wished him luck in the game, and he ran back to the Toronto side to stretch out. Super nice guy in the very brief time that I met him. When I saw this was an Icon A5 I scratched my head. I have seen many videos of this light sport plane. Its designed with the novice pilot in mind and has several safety features that for all practical purposes prevents the plane from doing things that would get the pilot killed. It prevents stalls and has an emergency parachute system (must be deployed above 500 feet I believe). Icon has gone above and beyond to ensure that pilots are trained in the use of the aircraft as well as all safety procedures. They have simplified all controls and front dash panels to make the aircraft less busy and easier to handle without a cockpit full of confusing instruments. This allows the pilot to ENJOY flying more and also allows for a pilot to quickly learn how to use the plane, especially since they must posses a normal pilot license and are qualified solo before being allowed to fly this plane. Icon provides direct training by qualified ICON A5 trainers as well to ensure the pilot is properly instructed and aware of all plane characteristics, Inspecting before a flight, all flight controls, flight characteristics and handling, as well as all LIMITATIONS of use and all Emergency procedures. Also, this plane is AMPHIBIOUS, which provides MORE places to land the plane in an emergency becuase the plane FLOATS and turns into a BOAT on water. Many use this Plane to get to out of the way FISHING SPOTS and then FISH from the Plane turned boat. Based on the TESTS and videos have seen on this plane there is virtually no reason anyone should DIE from useing this aircraft when used according to the manufacturers specifications and warnings. That being said, ALL PLANES are inherently DANGEROUS, just like CARS and BOATS, and it mandates that anyone flying a plane take all the necessary training and precautions to ensure they are operating the plane safely and within specifications and use cases that the plane was designed. Meaning, you dont try to fly a commercial transport plane like an aerobatic plane, they are two different types of planes and have different characteristics and therefore must be flown in a manner consistant with those design parameters. Flying under the influence of drugs is equivalent to a DUI/DWI. Obviously it NEVER should be attempted. It is very SAD that Roy was having so many issues in his life that he felt the use of MULTIPLE types of drugs, that should have never been mixed in the first place, was what he needed to cope. It almost comes across as suicide (based on more than 3x the amount of amphetamine in his system to cause death, he was a dead man flying before the crash) when seen in this light. But as with most people that use drugs and Rx in this manner, once sober they will say they have little recall of what they did and how it affected themselves and others at the time. While Roy struggled with addiction since at least 2015 those around him also struggled with codependency and enabling him. Several rehab stints did not help him beat the addiction and seemingly his family was not enough of a motivation for him to get off the drugs either. References 1. I was working on a jobsite on the water and remember seeing him fly overhead because it was such an odd plane. ...Saw the news later that day when I got home and realized I was one of the last to see him before he died. Finishing up the same job a couple of months later, the Sun Cruz Casino that had been parking next to my job site everyday, caught fire and 50 people jumped overboard and one person died - all in the same area. I was ready to be done with that job.

I don't believe this was a deliberate suicide. He bought himself a boy toy and pushed it beyond safe limits. A week before the crash he bragged on social media about doing crazy things in his new plane. Testosterone - and a cocktail of prescription drugs - caused this crash. If he had a wife and children who loved him, I've even less respect for him. He owed it to them to stay alive and not risk his death for a few seconds thrill.

Very sad story. I live in new port richey and have a friend who witnessed this. He said the pilot was flying very recklessly, but actually seeing the crash and the guy die has haunted him. Sad sad story. I feel sorry for him and his family

That's what usually happens when your out there hot dogging it up whether your in a plane, a bike or a car. Then when I read all the extra drugs in his system it made a little more sense why he did what he did. To bad, he had quite a nice little machine. Like alway's the tfc channel showed his great affects and excellent quality of work. Number 1 Aviation on KZfaq.

Drugs don't make you irresponsible human being. You are irresponsible by your nature, not by drugs. Drugs do not change people to something else than they are. Stop spreading this nonsense about the nature of idiots (like our pilot here) and drugs. Stupidity IS enhanced by drugs, but that stupidity has to RESIDE ALREADY in the mind of drug user.

@@vidura Wrong. Many of the drugs he took were prescribed, and drugs have been proven to make people irresponsible. Roy was not irresponsible not stupid. This doesn't reflect him as a person. Drugs completely changes a person in an instance. Read more about Doc Roy Halladay before making ignorant, misinformed assumptions.

You're right. It makes no difference if a pilot is on drugs. All drug tests should be abolished. I feel more comfortable knowing that my pilot is drunk and on drugs.

Cool little aircraft. Looks like it is built the right way and just for hopping around, not flying like it's a p51 or something. And it has a parachute? That's very cool.

I watched this man pitch for my home team (Philadelphia Phillies). What a senseless lose...as a pilot myself I have to say that flying an aircraft is not like an ATV or jet ski as it was promoted by ICON. It's still an aircraft and without the due respect you need to give to the act of piloting an airplane, it will bite you and sometimes bite bad. RIP Roy

It was indeed very selfish behavior, and the kind of thing that addicts rarely consider: 'What if I crashed into one of those houses? - those fishing boats?' It's because practically everyone thinks they can somehow function under the influence, that they're this super-talented exception who can "keep it together" due to high tolerance or something, but really they can't. I'm glad the guy had some fun with his plane before crashing it, but I was sorry to hear more of the specific circumstances, and it is the most disturbing to me to think of how many people must have been absolutely scared witless- and/or infuriated- watching him fly over them that day. They were helpless, and it sounds like it would've been readily apparent to any observers that the pilot's judgment was off- just a scary situation. 😔

@@tarkusmjg Yes- and he could have easily created a lot more pain, had he crashed elsewhere. The fact that his behavior was not reasonable doesn't negate or invalidate the pain of addiction; it simply is. Both things are true.
