would strongly recommend NOT using fiberglass insulation on the rim joists in ANY capacity. Fiberglass is vapor permeable meaning moisture/air will pass right through it. Putting plastic up (or paper-faced fiberglass) will help prevent the warm interior air meeting a colder rim joist in the winter months but not best way to prevent moisture, mold/mildew, etc. Recommend putting in foamular foam board in squares on the rim joist it provides a complete thermal break from rim joist to the inside of the home. Makes a big difference for efficiency. I know from experience as i dealt with a shoddy install of plain fiberglass on my rim joists on a brand new custom home we built and had serious mold/mildew and moisture issues around entire home.

Pre treat below the slab with pesticide and plastic before installing foam board .
@DaveSosnowski2 жыл бұрын
Nice video, but I disagree with bat insulation in the rim joist. Bat type insulation only works when enclosed and a stapled vapor barrier is not the best option. Utilized close cell spray foam around the perimeter in the rim joist/sill plate location to get the best results. Plus, installing an interior PVC draintile system with a flange going up the wall about 3 inches above the slab would result in a lifetime waterproofed basement. Lastly, I'm not a big fan of a finished enclosed ceiling in the basement. That really prevents the ability to diagnose and fix potential plumbing issues. Using a drop ceiling or even just spraying the joists and pipes in a matte finish is what I'm seeing a lot of done these days.

I cannot find any information at all about insulating the interior basement if you have already 2" foamed the outside of the foundation.....Is it okay to foam the inside also, or is this bad to have foam on both sides of the concrete?

The header detail is wrong. The header/rim joist will get wet, and that moisture will be trapped in there by the moisture barrier they installed. That header needs to be able to dry from the inside.
@lionintu4 жыл бұрын
Yeah the rigid foam should be installed in the rim joists as well
@benjaminpohl4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. In fact, depending on the treatments used on the exterior of the foundation, the polyethylene vapor retarder is unnecessary. Let the wall dry to the inside.
@NeoKnight93 жыл бұрын
Disagree. That detail can be correct, particularly if the basement is unfinished, since the VB is acting as an air barrier.

I live in a temperate climate zone. Recently I insulated the rim joist on an existing home by using caulk air seal the wood joints then used R-15 Rockwool. I have used foam board in the past but that prevents future termite inspections.

How is the gypsum board optional for mineral wool?
@daemoncan23643 жыл бұрын
It's optional if you like breathing in mineral wool fibers :) Actually, it probably has to do with fire rating.
@NeoKnight93 жыл бұрын
@@daemoncan2364 Right. Foam (sprayed/rigid) has to be fire protected (roxul or drywall, or other approved method). You shouldn't leave it exposed.

My basement has the original foundation blanket (old layer of pink insulation with vapour barrier) then a framed wall around perimeter of basement approx 6 inches from concrete foundation wall then a second layer of yellow (newer) insulation with its own vapour barrier... basically an insulation sandwich. Was wondering if this is a recipe for disaster and it needs to be ripped out or the double protection is better. I’m in southern Ontario (climate wise). Anyone with experience/thoughts....???
@joshtiel29803 жыл бұрын
Hey Louai, the general rule of thumb is you insulate only on one side of your vapor barrier/ air seal. If you insulate on both, you invite moisture to collect leading to mold. If you want to increase your sound dampening, you need to change your insulation density, or increase your insulation thickness but also move your vapor barrier/ air seal line accordingly.
@LouaiAlchikh3 жыл бұрын
@@joshtiel2980 thanks for the feedback. Pretty much drives with several opinions I've gotten from various sources. Unfortunately, looks like I have to rip everything out and re-insulate it properly.

A vapor barrier is needed under the floor slab, beneath the insulation.

I was wondering about that. I think this video assumes that the walls are dry. But then, with the vapor barrier there, it seems the backside of the drywall would get moldy over time.

This question is for Owens Corning: why not just install Ecotouch Pink Fiberglass insulation directly against the foundation walls?
@ryanbetlejeski56134 жыл бұрын
Mold
@BenKlassen14 жыл бұрын
That's actually the best solution in cold climates but must be part of the architectural plans in order to insulate the rim board from the outside as well and not interfere with the exterior cladding.
@huejanus55053 жыл бұрын
Because it will get damp, and stay damp, producing mold. The rigid insulation acts as a moisture barrier, not quite the same as a vapour barrier.

Vapor barrier on warm inside walls? Is that right?
@BenKlassen14 жыл бұрын
It depends on your climatic region.
@ImDembe3 жыл бұрын
The water should not go in if it's warmer inside than outside. A basement should be protected from the outside first, lead the water away from the basement.
@RunningCordoroy3 жыл бұрын
you put the vapour barrier on the warm side. so in colder climates, the vapour barrier is on the inside.
@huejanus55053 жыл бұрын
Up here in Canada (cold) yes. I believe in Texas (hot) it’s on the outside walls.
@canuckfixit77223 жыл бұрын
In northern climates, probably not a good idea because it will trap moisture on the *inside* of that vapor barrier that cannot escape to the inside of the house. In southern climates, consult local building codes.

Nope, but did go to many hard ware places and so many different ideas from all different people which made more confusing . As long as u don't have a lot of water coming through ur good to do this there will be moister due to older house not having a barrier on outside of house but not enough in my case to worry about mold or anything I cleaned walls and sprayed with mold killer just in case and then put glue at top of foam board and then it hung down I didn't bother to glue it against wall so proper but I did tuck tape seems and edges the 2x4 frames wall help hold it nice Sorry about spelling and grammar.
@Thoracius2 жыл бұрын
@@raymondhoguelll2044 Are you brave enough to take a look and see if you have mold forming in the pink stuff that's sandwiched between the foam and the vapor retarder? With this design there's no way for the fiberglass insulation to dry if it ever gets wet (which it will, because this is a basement... doubly so b/c yours is an older one that leaks). Achilles heel of this design is the bottom where any water ingress will flow and can then wick up into any of the layers.

Thoracius Appotite I need your help. Block foundation. I’m going to install an interior weeping tile beside the footer to a sump pump. Drill holes at the base of my block to let the water out of the wall down into the pipe below using dimple board folded in the cold joint. Re pour concrete, use 1/2” styrofoam then R20 fibreglass insulation. Thoughts ??? Thanks
@Thoracius2 жыл бұрын
@@rawhim5033 There are some great building science videos about insulating basements. Check those out. It's quite complex, especially since often part of the basement is above grade, so for part of the year you may have vapor driving out above grade while ground moisture being driven in below grade. Best according to my research is to insulate and waterproof the exterior, though of course on an existing house this involves some digging.
@brenden97583 жыл бұрын
Just spray foam it instead, it's the only way to really deal with basement moisture unless you do ICF.
@SomeUserNameBlahBlah3 жыл бұрын
Can I ignore adding a vapor barrier if ICF is used? I've been looking into an ICF build and trying to get as many details as possible.
@donm22553 жыл бұрын
I agree. You don't want any warm moist air condensating on the the concrete. If humidity gets back behind the poly, then it causes mold grown in the insulation. Actually, there is a lot of moisture already in the concrete wanting to evaporate into the living space. Installing 2x4 framing then closed cell spray foam directly on the concrete walls is the way to go. It keeps the warm moist air completely away from the concrete and the moisture in the concrete stays in the concrete. Trapping the fiberglass insulation in between the poly vapor barrier and concrete is not a good idea. Once side of the fiberglass has to breath to the dry environment. The spray foam also solves the problems with sealing all the penetrations.

in my opinion its better to let the basement dry outward not inside unless you want to grow mold
@digibluh2 жыл бұрын
it can't dry outward if the ground is wet, which it probably is 99% of the time. usually there's a layer of tar or something outside the basement wall, but it doesn't last forever.
