Okay 3 things from a veterinary student: 1. Never feed a dog yogurt, dogs are lactose intolerant most of the time. 2. Its bad to bathe any dog 3-4 times a month, it's not good for their skin and hair, a few times a year is better and they groom themselves like cats. And 3. Hip Dysplasia is not common at all in smaller dogs, especially as small as Basenjis are. It's more common in larger breeds like German Shepherds, Labs and Rottweilers.

We bathe our 2 Basenji's weekly and their skin is fine. It's a matter of using a good shampoo. And we don't scrub them harshly. The idea is to get the stink off the fur. :o)

if your basenji isn't mixed. Once in a month in more than enough. Basenji is like a wild cat, very clean and doesn't smell.

You would only bathe a dog 3 or 4 times a year if it is 100 percent living outside.

Had a Basenji "mix". Best dog in the WORLD! Female. Loved to run. Loved Life! Let her out when I got home from work to poop and pee, and she couldn't wait to get back to see me. Didn't need a fence. Never took treats from strangers. She only trusted me. Very loyal.

@@petmoo FYI, she did disobey me, once. I was watching one of my infant grandkids overnight. She laid under the crib and wouldn't come out, no matter how much I called her. Finally, I gave up. Couldn't interrupt her "Guard duty." Great maternal instinct.

Can I still have a basenji if I am allergic? When I do get allergic reactions I have a bit of a runny nose, itchy face especially eyes and uneasy breaths (chest/lungs tightens).

If you want one make sure you have a large yard, and are able to spend high quality time doing physical activities outside with them. Not a lap dog!

How would you generally describe Basenjis? Calm/normal or Active/working? (I'm look at meal plans for dogs)

Ours are both calm and active, depending on the moment. They have adapted well to our lifestyle, meaning when we need to go out, they sleep, and when we come home they're ready to play - and we need to engage with them at that time. Of course, that's when we get some of the best videos for our channel too! lol

They need a large yard to play in to be happy, also they enjoy high quality time with you running, fetching etc. If you don't have a large space and time they are not for you.

@@carlitoxb110 They can adapt to a apartment, but they normally happy with more than just a long walk. They love to run, jump, and play with their owner outside, if someone is only able to walk them it would not be recommended to have one.

Kind of like a cat. They like you, but dont need you all day long. They will snuggle, but more for warmth or sleeping than anything else

They won't be a husband or wife if that's what you are looking for. These dogs are most happy with a large yard where they can run and play. If they are going to be with you they enjoy high quality physical activities with you not really cuddling, they are NOT a lap dog.

Considering a Basenji, but I think they are not too common in Brazil. Would they be suited to warmer climates? Do they enjoy vigorous exercise? Long walks? Are they good off-leash? (Sorry I have many questions!) are they good with other dogs? (Particularly smaller yappier dogs? I work as an English teacher and have frequent breaks between classes but a pet would need to be alone for an hour or two during the day, is this breed suited to staying home alone(i.e if trained well he won’t eat my sofa?:’)) :)

I just got a basenji 3 months ago. 1)It suits to hot weather much better than most dogs. 2)very vigorous...3)not easy to train and better not to go out off-leash before enough traning.4) good with bigger dogs but better not with smaller dogs because he is too strong and energetic for small dogs. 5) he doesn't want to be alone, yodels when he is. 6)always put into limited space when leaving him alone.

Hello Emma. We live in the state of Rio de Janeiro and were adopted by a Basenji mix that showed up in our garden a couple of years ago. She is absolutely gorgeous. Has learned many tricks but I don't trust her to go off-leash anywhere as she has her own mind! When I need to go shopping she stays on her own inside the house for a few hours (sometimes nearly five hours) with no problem at all! Until this day she hasn't ruined anything at all in the house, although we did have plenty of toys and bones she could chew on. She absolutely loves to be in the sun recharging her batteries (chuckles), but she definitely hates the cold weather and the rain.

I dropped my 2 month basenji pup on concrete from about 5 feet :( He was ok No broken bone of fracture. Would this possibly hurt his health in the long run?
