This man was the sound of country music to me when I was a kid. I'll never forget traveling at night in the early 60's and hearing Roy and Oswald coming from that single radio speaker in that 57 Ford. Every time I hear a dobro it takes me right back there for a few minutes. So glad you put this on here. Stop by my channel some time.

I have listened to country and bluegrass music most of my life and have never heard an artiest like Brother Oswald on the Dobro. He is for sure the best that has ever been. When you hear someone like him you really don't care to hear the rest because you have heard the best. Roy Acuff was fortunate indeed to have this man in his group.

Yep, Grandpa, String, Os, they just don't make good country entertainers like that anymore. Too much glitz and glamour. The old timers had to have the talent. It wasn't all done with computers, smoke, and mirrors like it is today. Lawd, how I miss those old timers. May they rest in peace. Thanks to all those who post their work on KZfaq and keep their memories alive.

I am listening to this heavenly sound as I write these words. I'd love to be able to buy as many dvd's of this wonderful man Oz playing the Dobro including those (if there are any) of his unique laugh. I'm sure this instrument must have been designed in Heaven. This is the sound that made me fall in love with Country Music since childhood. People like Oz should live forever, I know his wonderful music will.

I remember in the 1990s,I went to an Opry Birthday autograph session.I wanted to meet Os,and as I stood in line, for over a Hour,I could see him,at the table. When I neared the table,he got up,and was wisked away by a young lady,& was using a cane.I stepped out of line,& asked if I could get a picture with him.The lady asked if he felt like it,& he obliged me. What a Legend & a Sound.

I met this sweet man when I worked at Opryland USA back in 1973. He was a true gentleman.Every morning he was there he'd come down to Rudy's Sausage restaurant where I worked. Rudy's was near the front gate of Opryland. He's order a coffee for Roy Acuff and a chocolate (hot chocolate) for himself. He was so polite. From time to time we got to talk a bit. He and Roy would always sit across from Rudy's and drink their coffee and chocolate. I miss those innocent days. Love you Brother Oswald.

Some of the more modern "reso" players think that Oswald's playing was too simple. I would like to tell the ones that think that-he was playing something that you don' seem to be able to do and that is playing the MELODY of the song. Most players today, if you did not hear them announce what they were playing you would have no idea what they were playing. Thanks Os for all the great memories.

He was the #1 star, of Roy Acuffs posse., when marty Stuart asked him, how long he was a member of the Opry, he said he wasn't. Marty asked if he'd like to be, Oz said he'd rather be an Opry member than in the Country Music Hall Of Fame. Marty, then went to Opry officials, and urged them, to induct this long-time Opry-sideman. Way to go, Marty ! They still should induct Oswald into the Hall Of Fame, Of Counrty Music. His voice, & dobro, & banjo, were heard on WSM airwaves, for almost 70 years.

Os was a classic. I miss his type of entertaining. He used a round pedal steel type bar rather than the grooved "Stevens" type bar that most dobro players use. Always liked Os's banjo frailing. I like the old Gibson open back banjo he used to play in the earlier days. It had a great sound.

Capo 2ème case = SOL, DO et RE7

When Oswald goes way high up on the neck at one point - I've always said he goes into the "Os-Zone" which to me is the land beyond the frets. In his A tuning the last fully fretted note he has is an E at the 19th fret. The high A he hits would be at the 24th fret if you had frets that went that far-so you have to know where you are going and what to do when you get there-Os always did.

Thanks so much for posting this video. I watch it over and over. Can anyone tell me the date of this video? Also, who is the fiddle player, and is he the same guy that's in the video of Os and Mac Wiseman, "Carry Me Back to the Mountains"? and finally I can't find any info about the song "End of the World" being played here. Does anyone know anything about it? Thanks so much

@Lessar77 Really, it is the slow simple songs that are more difficult to play. If you hit a wrong note in the middle of a simple tune...it's THERE! You can not cover it up with a hasty lick around it like you can in a high speed, flurry of notes type tune!
