Basic 1x1 Helical Stripes

In this video, to accompany the Arnall-Culliford Knitwear eBook, Something New to Learn About Helical Knitting, learn how to work a simple two-round stripe pattern. This method is the basis for all helical knitting and works on all types of needles for knitting in the round. Helical knitting sets up multiple spirals of stitches in your knitted fabric and allows you to knit completely jogless stripes.

Eleonora Lazzarini Hi Eleonora! You just need to stop working with each colour at a suitable point in your work, and then knit over all stitches in your new colour. I hope that makes sense. 🙂

I would like to do socks like this. One stripe of navy throughout with stripes of little balls of all different coloured scraps. How would this work?

Shelley Lewis It would work well as long as you are doing essentially 1x1 stripes with the navy as one stripe and changing through the others as the second stripe. You would see a jog where the other colours swapped over though. I hope that helps. 🙂

You can work multi-round stripe patterns helically, but you need to set it up differently. There will be a video coming about multi-round stripes in a few weeks’ time. :)

How do you count your rows?

Hi Trudy! You can either count each time one of your yarns passes the start of round marker (using a row counter or similar) or you can just read the number of stripes from the fabric. Any normal row counting method will work, you just need to do it when the yarn passes the marker. I hope that helps. :)

Can this be done somehow to not have a visible jog at the start and stop of the striped section? If not, please stop calling this jogless because I'm on video nine in a row claiming to be jogless but having that same ugly start and stop I'm trying to avoid.

Have you compared this to standard stripes? There is a jog at every single colour change with standard stripes. In the helical method the start and end is visible, but it can be disguised somewhat with ribbing beforehand / after. But there is no other way to introduce a second colour without a spot where the old and new sit next to each other. It is a fact of the knitted fabric.
