Basic Body Language with Horses

A person's "presence" with a horse will have a lot to do with their effectiveness riding and handling that horse. I ride at a riding school, so most of the horses are pretty numb to all of this, but the other day I was handling a more newly arrived horse, and simply couldn't get her to stand still when I was mounting up. Suddenly I thought of this video, asked myself how I was standing, slumped down a bit and voila, horse was standing perfectly still. I really wish our teachers there would tell us stuff like this.

As a Martial Arts Instructor, I'm familiar with body posture and language, and this presentation is congruent with what I taught my students. Now that I got a Wild Horse in Alberta, these training tools are valuable assets to train with my new buddy 'Free Spirit'. Thank you for this clip.

The more relaxed you are around a horse the better it is for THEM and for you. They are prey animals, so they are always on the lookout for something that will "eat" them. They pick up on everything and can see right through you. They are much smarter than we give them credit for.

That's probably exactly why I am having problems with understanding the minds of horses often. Had dogs, cats, bearded dragons, snakes. All of them predators. So I am good with them but completely lost with animals like horses and cattle

Amy , do predators ( dogs, cats ) need the same rules? Or is it just the theory of learning , aversives , and humane based training that are the explanations. Horses dont need assertive or whips to learn anymore than any other species does.

Even on your first change in position I immediately noticed a response from the horse before the demonstrations begin. The level of alertness, that somewhat hint of that anxiety tick swaying the head and nipping at his leg. It's interesting how deep this goes with animals in general. Same goes with dogs when it comes to posture, and stances.

if you have any horse WELL trained on the ground there is a lot less work to do in the saddle. I always started my horses at yearlings. working on leading, start with halter and lead, then just halter then nothing then repeating these same steps outside an arena. If your horse trusts you and know what you ask of him he will make a better mount in the long run. I never rode my horses until they were 2-2.5 and at two it was sitting for a few minutes once or twice a week and gradually moving up. I had my last mare she was born late in the year and she was 2.5 to 3 years old and we took the trophy at a club for the competitions that summer for the 5 and under classes. she did lead changes and side passes and backing up in different directions. this is with riding her a few times a week and ground working the rest.

Thank you so much for providing these videos. It is so valuable to hear this basic information like body language and the energy you give off to your horse. It really makes all the difference in the experience with your horse. Especially if I feel nervous or get upset at something my 2 year old is doing, I have to immediately remember to breath and calm my body and mind.

Just found this video and enjoyed it. I look forward to viewing more and learning how to communicate more effectively with my horse and my husband communicating with his horse better. It's been 30+ years since I've had my own horse and love having them again. It's filled a missing spot in my soul. We have two rescued horses, one is easy to ride, the other is not so easy and we are looking on here for tips and training tools to work with her so we can start trail riding soon. Thank you!

There is a OTTB at my barn and we were feeding them outside in their pasture and trip (he is the OTTB) wasn’t really wanting to get his sheet on so every time he pinned his ears I tried my best to make my body and my Voice as relaxed as much as I could and his ulcers are acting up so having calm and positive body language really helped for me to get him out of his pasture for me to get his sheet on

Not more sensitive than a cat, just slightly different. Felis familiaris is both a predator and prey, so they are equisitely sensitive to their surroundings. However, many cats become somewhat de-sensitized to their owners, especially when indoors. Take the cat outdoors, and it may show you where the term 'scaredy cat' came from. Horses often do the same thing. One example is horses that are dead quiet in the ring, but a bundle of nerves when ridden out.

This was such a great video ! I have not hear anyone explain their behavior like this; it has been SUPER helpful !! I am extremely new to horses and training them. Also the horse I am blessed to be around is not mine. I do have the ability to go see him whenever though 🙂 This does explain a lot though !! I personally just wiggle the lead rope slightly when I ask my horse to back up, as he is highly responsive to pressure and release, and it seems to work for me. Overall great video, I really enjoy your take on connecting and listening to your horse and being aware of your state of mind while working with your animal. Keep the videos coming!

I don't have a horse (though I wish I could!), but your video helped me with my writing hobby, learning how to write horse behavior more realistically rather than just using my best guess haha. Something specific I've been trying to find is: how horses show affection towards humans they trust and how they act around humans they do NOT trust. I'll keep looking, but any help could mean a lot :)

Body language I have found is enhanced by items you carry, Rope and halter, worming syringe and vaccination shot. As opposed to an apple, candy cane or just a smile. Good video.

Excellent, well-presented and informative, with one small correction: When talking about non-verbal communication percentage, I think you may be referring to Albert Mehrabian's 1971 contention that communication is "55" body language, 38% tonal and 7% verbal"; certainly few would agree with the 7% figure, and his statement has since been debunked. But your point is absolutely valid. In my experience, far more than half of my equine communication is non verbal.

It takes time to develop good timing, rhythm, and feel when using pressure and release. A point is reaches where one will need fewer aids.

Hi. Molly here from CPK Training. Humans love to talk. Even the good ones. Today this nice human forgot to bring carrots so the object for you , the horse, is to get the blah blah blah over ASAP. So offer every bit of cooperation you can. If you don't recognize word clues just guess. Do be careful not to get hit in the eye when a human walks toward your face while spinning a lead rope or reins. Be polite and whatever you do never step on your human. This will trigger another blah blah blah session and possibly other assorted unpleasantries.

I normally don't have to say anything or do to much dramatic movements to make my mare go forward, backwards or to do turns until I want a specific movement, and I don't always have to have a lead on her at all times we go for walks everyday I would believe she just loves being with me,

My horse is buddy sour, how can I become more confident for my horse when we go with my daughter who barrel races in an event so I can watch from a different part of the grounds. He gets high headed Winnie’s/sorta screams in a high pitch which send my neck hairs stand up. Then now I’m nervous which makes him more nervous. I really want to be able to just go along and walk around while she completes. Thank you…😊

get rid of the sun glasses, the horse needs to see your eyes for a clearer cue, as well I would give the horse a chance to respond before whipping around the line in her face

glorianne papolis The horse knows where her focus is, and sunglasses prevent her from squinting or frowning - which the horse may interpret as being unfriendly. Also, I am 99% certain she does not want to make direct eye contact. Predators stare so horses don't like eye contact. As for the twirl, timing is key. If a dominant horse wants to move another in the pasture, she gives a couple subtle cues and if the other does not move they will get bit or kicked. In the video she is giving subtle cues with her posture. The twirling lead rope is similar to another horse reaching its neck out to bite. It is a warning. Twirling harder and faster would be the next level before popping the horse with the end of the rope. This is a very good video imho.

patty huber you don't have to pop him in the face, horses don't bite each other in the face, I have seen her make direct eye contact in other videos, she says it herself , direct eye contact to make them do something, and she is not wearing the sunglasses to prevent from squinting or frowning as you say, that does not make sense, if that was the case she would always be wearing them,

How do you assert yourself with your aids (rope or whip) with regard to a dominant or recalcitrant horse? I know we aren't supposed to strike them, so how do we get them to comply?

I dont have my own horses yet so I volunteer with horses so I'm not allowed to bring them out much but there is one young (3 or 4 years old) horse that is very pushy and him being with other horses makes it hard for me to successfully work with him on not being pushy (I'm the only volunteer that will go in with them) but since he is not mine I don't get to use anything for training. What should I do to get him to listen when I ask him to back up when he gets too close at the wrong time?

I have been taking riding lessons very recently and I have only had 2 so far. My first pony I had when I was 9 years old, and we actually rescued her but she was extremely skiddish. I was very scared of her because I was young but I loved her very much and wanted to have a close relationship with her. Now that I am 16 and trying to be around horses more (that have not been abused) I still get very nervous even when standing next to them. Anyone have any tips or suggestions? I am saving up money to get my own horse and board him where I take lessons, and I want to have a close and comfortable relationship with them. :) I just need more advise on how to calm myself down, it's like I get too anxious that they won't like me or be afraid of me.

Maybe volunteer at a local riding stable and just groom the horses. They love it, and it will calm you down just brushing a horse all over. Pick up their feet and clean their hooves, its therapeutic for both of you. Plus it’s helpful for the stable to have free labor.

Since I posted here, I have experimented with mine, further proof of their attention. I have been in his stall with the door open, and I turned and looked intently out the door. He stopped eating immediately, and looked too. Then I turned back to him as if giving the all clear and he also resumed eating. Now when we ride out (only short distance up the road as he is only 5, and still has two years left to grow), I will look at something I think will concern him, then look away, he has been very good so far, flags, trash bags, dumpsters, dogs, other horses, cars driving slowly past (we have yet to go on the open road), if anything, its noises that make him react more than visual things. But the body language thing really is very powerful. I have now trained my cats to hand signals, the same as the horse... proving, even though it looks like they are ignoring, they are not.

Hi, I take care of and ride horses. I am having some strange behaviors with one of my horses. He stretches his neck out, grinds his teeth and presses them against my hand. He doesn't bite my hand, just presses on it with his chin or mouth. Anybody have any idea what it means?

It could be a tooth/teeth are bothering him? I’d check he doesn’t have any spurs or rough edges, etc.

What is the purpose of that bit at the end of the rope that you keep swinging around? I notice it's not just a continuation of the same rope. Is it to make it sting a bit more when it hits because they have a thick hide?

My gelding ised to do this. He thought it was funny. He eventually just bored himself with it and the bahavior went away. We never did anything bout it.

You're backing up the horse you're hitting it with the Rope and if I got a new horse I would tell them not to do this the horse clearly is putting his ears back and it's not safe the horse could clearly just buck the person is not safe so if you're getting a new horse don't use this backing up tool what I do is I just tapped horse like on its neck or like they can tap it on its chest and then it automatically knows that it should back up

Have an interview as a handler and wrote I worked with horses before at my family’s ranch. (I did, but I only watched as my uncle did all the hard work) Now I’m tryna to catch up to my lie.🤫
