I have the best son-n-law in the world. He was raised to dine this way and at home this is what and how he does , but he still can sit down on a curb and eat a burger. He can converse with over the top type people and he can get down on any level of conversation with us commoners and he is always a true gentleman . My daughter did well !

Oh, this is so important. It was 20 years ago and I still remember the time when we were dining at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and waiter cleared my plate while I went to used a bathroom. I was left sooo disappointed.....and hungry ☹️ Thank you explaining proper manners 😊❤️

Remember, many of these "signals" and rules are also created to help the staff make servings and removals as smooth as possible. Etiquette and manners are all about being considerate and polite of other people, and it helps cast oneself in the best light.

Most easy and healthiest way to eat is using your hands. 1) Wash your hands properly and do not use towel or napkin to dry to let digestive fluids come in action. 2) Eat using Index Finger,, Middle Finger and Thumb. 3) Wash your hands after eating and use towel or napkin to dry them immediately so digestive fluids stop. Rest everything is fency, unnatural and less healthy. Good Luck.

And eating using your barehands are disgusting especially people with long fingernails lol, literally there's a lot of bacteria in our hands, you need to use anti-bacterial soap and alcohol as if people who eat with their barehands afford to buy those since they can't even afford utensils at the first place. 😂

Nice video, I have one thing to add if eating at a reastaurant and need to leave the table. If you are not finished, you place your napkin on the chair as a signal to the staff not to remove the plate. However, if you want the staff to remove the plate, you place the napkin on the table. This is in addition to the placement of the utensils.

An interesting difference when dining out is that in the UK the waiter will only collect the plates when everyone has finished, whereas in the US the waiter clears the table as each person finishes. I don't like the US way at all because it puts pressure on those who eat slowly like myself.
@orlandotopman6759
@orlandotopman6759 Жыл бұрын
As a former banquet waiter in the US, different establishments set their own standard. At places that required the entire table to finish a course before clearing, many times I would be asked to remove one person's plate. That always started the 'Mine-too's, which we did. The other extreme when we cleared as each guest finished made it look and feel rushed. The happy medium was the 50-75% rule. That was when at the head waiter's call, the place settings were removed when either 50 or 75% of the guests at the table were finished. This way worked, in my opinion, because it gave everyone the time to finish eating before the next course. Again, I worked banquets. A full table was anywhere from 8-12 per table. The host would give us the time-line for the dinner service. It was not a random call made by the waiter. If the host told us to stop service at 7:30, then we stopped. If people were not served their entre or dessert, it was not our decision. By clearing more place settings early, it helped to try to ensure all guests received all the courses. We did not follow the rules on flatware placement since very many did not use the rules. It was more efficient to ask the guest, "May I remove the plate?"

For example, the server brings to the center of the table, a big piece of apple pie with ice cream on top to share with your date. Do you cut a piece of the pie and serve it on your plate? Do you eat the pie and ice cream with a fork or do you use the spoon to scoop the ice cream together with the pie and eat it with a fork?

I forgot the true origins of switching knife and fork - I have never done this myself. But later many people say that it is more polite because it makes people slow down and gives them more time to chew their food properly. Because no one wants to watch someone else shovel food down their throats. in a nonstop fashion. Putting your fork down between bites forces you to completely chew your food and eliminate it from your mouth before you take another bite. I have seen plenty of people who do not put their knife down and put food into their mouths before they have COMPLETELY swallowed the first batch and it truly is disgusting to see. It also creates time so that people do not overeat. They say that when people slow down during a meal, they eat less. (Because there is a lag time between when you are full and actually REALIZE that you are full).

She took one thing as a given when it might not be: in European style, when you are eating something that does not require stabbing and cutting how do you bring it to your mouth? Although American style seems fussy and inefficient, at least the tines of the fork are positioned in such a way that small bits can be scooped and will naturally fall into the curve of the fork, not downward toward the plate. In the European style you *have* to keep your knife poised to protect your food from escaping the fork.

Hello! I've been watching your series. I'm in need of some advice. One of my personal goals is to improve my manners, and this includes table etiquette.However, I have a handicap which makes it hard for me to achieve a "pencil - style" grip on utensils. When I attempt this, my hands are very shaky and I usually end up dropping the utensil. I typically hold my utensil in a fist. I know it is considered extremely rude, but I hate wearing my meal. Are there alternative grips for utensils that are considered acceptable?

I watched this because I just saw a video of British people eating rice. Of course they held the fork in their left hands with the tines pointed down. They then used the knife basically to force the rice into the tines of the fork. I thought this was very odd. I don't understand why they don't turn the fork tines up and use it as a scoop to eat their rice. Live and learn. Nice video. If only they had one on commenting etiquette.

in European dining, where do you put your knife if you want to eat veggies between the meat on the plate? just hold it? what if i'm right handed? this is backwards to me in euro style dining because i'm cutting with my right hand but eating with my left. can't I switch it? I suppose so, but I cant cut very good w/my left hand, so American it is!

She kept referring to the American style 2xs and kept the fork in her left hand and feigned eating with it.

That's what I thought. I was surprised at the crisscross thing she did. A tad gauche to my mind.

I took etiquette classes and I was told by a diplomacy teacher that when you finish your meal you align by 12:30 not by 10:20...🧐🧐

And some people will tell you it's just a matter of laying the utensils diagonally across the plate. It doesn't really matter, as long as the utensils are side by side. If you put them crossed over one another or on opposite rims of the plate, that's a signal you're not done yet.

That is an interesting comment regarding the cutlery position when finishing dinner. May I ask in which country you were told this by the (quotes) "diplomacy teacher"?

As a British person, I have to take issue with your "expert" in the matter of how to place one's knife and fork at the end of the meal. Where on Earth did she get the notion that they are placed in a "10:20" position, and with the prongs of the fork facing down? I can assure you that at no formal dinner that I've ever attended in Britain is this done. The knife and fork are placed in a "6 o'Clock" position, with the fork prongs facing upwards. I've seen a number of US " dining etiquette" programmes and they all teach the "10:20" position, prongs down. Why? Where did this idea emanate from? Certainly not from the UK.

@@Timeless80 You and I, most likely, grew up in the same time period. It doesn't really matter where you eat today, most diners eat with almost no manners!! I, too, was taught table etiquette by my mother who stressed the importance of good manners at the table and away from it. You are right! When one is finished with a meal, you place the knife and fork parallel to one another with tines of the fork facing downward. And crisscross the knife and fork (with the tines up), indicating that you have yet to finish the meal. It's nice to find a comrade out there in the world who still appreciates good dining etiquette!
