I love your training methods. We adopted a Greyhound a few days ago named Sootie. She was lovely and friendly but didn't have alot of confidence getting down stairs. After a few days of me needing to carry her downstairs (because she liked sitting up with me and could get up them quite easily) and letting her settle in a bit we tempted her to each step with a sprat. Now she wombles down the stairs with no problem. She is extremely loving and I wasn't a fan of Greyhounds before her but my partner fell in love with her and now so have I.

Simon adopting a greyhound that has been used for racing is a serious commitment. These dogs have never just ‘dogged’. They don’t know what a sliding glass window is they’ve never couched for Netflix bingeing they’ve never done anything that was just for fun or just for themselves These animals have been very well trained to b obedient. Children and loud home environments r Not Recommended. Go slow, n learn everything u can about greyhound rehabilitation. And remember these dogs can RUN, off leash they can go up to 55mph. Be strong be careful. Be 💯 prepared. These animals often have developed joint issues due to being overworked as a track asset.

@@iyamwhatiyam547 when adopting a greyhound even with no experience of dogs, you are told it is simple to transition them into normal life with basic training over time. Also any rescue dog could have issues and will need training due to most rescue dogs having a difficult start in life. Greyhounds are recommended to people as they are loving, gentle dogs that sleep most of the day.

Thankyou Rachel this vid , it was great, also refreshing to find you here on KZfaq as their are limited clips here for Greyhounds overall and those from NZ or Australia. I’ve just started training our 7 year old rehomed and rescue Greyhound Meri. 4 weeks I’ve had her now and she is set to stay with us. Just the basics and I know when she tires of it so I just stop, praise her then settle her. Is there any particular time you think these training sessions should take place? eg. after or before her outdoor morning ball time , walk, and before than long morning sleep? Or do you suggest I need to start it first thing each morning? How many times a day do you suggest to have a session like you demonstrated? In advance ,Thankyou for your time ....I just subscribed!

Appreciate the video, well done. Only that it is not necessary to use so much treats in my opinion. A dog can lean to focus without. If this would be a labrador, he would weight a ton already.

@hounds4life852
@hounds4life852 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, you can give your newly retired Greyhound any name that you like:) Even if they recognise their pet name already, it's easy to get them use to another name. They seem to be good with a single syllable name like Tom, Sam, James, Bell, Bolt, or 2 syllables like Bella, Silke, Lottie, Sandy, Candy,... Good luck:)

The silliest and goofiest of dogs for sure - they will make you laugh every day. Unfortunately my grey was attacked by an off leash dog and now she hates other dogs and gets aggressive. I just try to keep her away from other animals to avoid conflict. It's a challenge at times.

Could you by chance spell out underneath your video what dog treats you're talking about (or perhaps a link to a recipe) since for the N. Americans the Kiwi accent is a bit difficult to unravel in certain spots and the name of the dog treat/roll was one of those spots for me. Thanks

Hi, we use 'possyum roll', a dog roll that contains possum meat which is considered a pest in NZ and easy available. You can use any dog roll available to you, slice it and cut up the slices in small pieces of about the size of a thumb nail.

Both my husband and I work, although these days my husband is working from home. We are probably going to be getting a greyhound on Saturday and I’m scared of separation anxiety . Also, we have a cat and will be getting a cat tolerant one, but any advice would really help. I think it’s great that my husband will be home so he can monitor its behavior, but since he is now working from home, he won’t be able to give it too much time in the day. I’ll be back by about 6pm , so again, if there’s any advice for us, I’ll be very grateful for it.

Hi Rachel. Where do you train your Greyhounds? I’m in Victoria Australia. I am hoping you may be close by. Also do you do private or group training classes. I have a Whippet and have had Greyhounds in the past. Both breeds are very similar in many ways, in my opinion, the whippet just being a smaller version. I belief the gentle nature of the Whippet and Greyhound requires a different more gentle training approach which to the best of my knowledge I try to apply, but I am interested in improving my training methods by someone who is more adept with the two breeds. May you be able to help? Regards David Attridge Victoria Australia

Hi can i pls ask the purpose of training him to touch your hand ? Will rewarding him for this not encourage him to do that constant 'nudging' that is soooo annoying ! My friends dog does it constantly and i see that they absent mindedly pet it every time it does it, so it just does it more ! Even if it didnt learn this bad habit, what is the purpose of the excersise pls ? You dont mention it in thd vid. Thank you !
@hounds4life852
@hounds4life852 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Claire, the exercise is called 'focus' and teaches the Greyhound to focus on the training, not the treat. We have not heard that it encourages nudging for food. That seems to be more of a behaviour in an untrained dog who whats attention.

Note: track rescued greyhounds have never lived in a home they’re likely to have joint issues due to being overworked they aren’t house trained neither have they sat on a couch or understood a sliding glass window. They have been obedience trained. They’ve never just ‘dogged’. Help them to b a family member n Let ‘em dog. Agility training in rescue greyhounds should only be done after u consult with ur vet.
