I wrote a children’s book and am illustrating it, I’ve tried so many art mediums and gouache was recommended to me while at a local art store. SO happy I picked them up - it’s a game changer!

I couldn't use this with my first gouache (cakes in a pan) but I went and bought artist quality gouache and have been getting so frustrated with the muddy result. I only realized after some thought that I must have been reactivating the bottom layer, which hadn't happened with my worse-quality paints (maybe because I often mixed white into those). I appreciate this video!

I have been trying to follow your blending techniques with some success! Yay! I have been looking foe a palette like the one you use in layers and blending... I found it once fleetingly on the internet and now I can never find it again. Can you point me in the right direction as I think it is the one I would like to use because it fulfills all my needs in a palette. Thank you.

I just learned about this at a drink and draw ... and I'm not a vary .. experienced artist.. and I mainly use what ever is around. Which is cheap markers. Pens. Pencils and sharpie. ... and I always try to layer and blend them and .... well especially cryons... this doesn't work vary well. Some pens and pencils work great. But I think this might be my medium! Finally something I can blend and layer how my brain thinks it's going to work out lol

This is SO helpful! These are all the issues I have just been struggling with as I learn about using gouache. So happy to hear that I can surmount these problems with instruction and practice. I was beginning to think that gouache just wasn't the right medium for what I want to do. I do have one question - I have been getting conflicting information about whether or not I can re-use gouache paint after it dries on the palette, or in a half-pan. Some say no, but I see that sometimes gouache actually comes in dry pans. What is your experience? Thank you!

I use 1/4" and 1/2" blue painter's tape for my colour charts (8' x 15" with 1" squares) so, I have room to _write down_ the colours (using the Munsell system for hue, value and chroma) and the brand of the paint etc. These charts will get lots of use and I wanted to put them in a folder/binder). It is suggested that you test any tape before you use it on good paper. If you wait too long to remove it can take your paper with it. Washi tape isn't as sticky as masking tape so, it would be better but I don't know about its cost (since it is so decorative). Good luck and make sure to burnish those corners so there is no bleeding. ☮︎

What brand of gouache paints do you use most often? I imagine students would be wise to buy cheap to middling brands, but what about a professional?

Good videos, very clear and thorough. However, for me, it would be helpful if you slowed down and did less reading. Maybe you aren’t reading, but it sure sounds like it - rarely is someone so cadenced without reading. Do more of a situation like we were sitting there with you and you were showing us. It will sound less robot like and be easier to comprehend and take in. Take a breath every now and then, slow down, and pretend we are right there and just chatting. This is a very good video, compared to those where the person repeats over and over, drags along, or forgets what they are talking about and gets totally off subject. When it is so similar to reading, and fast without change in voice tone, pitch or volume - the brain kinda skips over what’s being said. It’s the opposite of where a really quiet, calm individual speaks or reads but it puts you to sleep. Think of Bob Ross, I loved to watch and listen to him, but if you ever had trouble sleeping, just put one of his videos on and you shortly would be nodding off. When someone speaks fast, but at exactly the same everything (tone, pitch, volume, cadence, etc), it strangely affects you in the same manner. Even though it’s not slow and easy like Ross or a gentle rain shower on a tin roof - there isn’t any thing to cause you to wake up even when really interested - and before you know it, you’ve missed what was said - your brain just tuned out. Think of the preacher in Sunday morning service -- he is talking along and just about the time we all drift off and he sees all these heads nodding, he gives us a few hell fires and damnation lines like thunder cracks in a rain storm. We don’t need that but consistent changes up and down keeps us bright and alert. Now all that said, it’s just my old fogey opinion and doesn’t count for much. Thanks so much for sharing all your experience with us.

What type of tape have you used for your grids? I’m obsessed with neat grids and love the variance in thickness you have used.

Artists make no sense. "Buy the most expensive paint, brushes, paper/canvas you can afford, but go cheap on your palette." DOH!🤦‍♂️

@@chobanichunks4480 In a show of Edgar Degas' works in St Louis a few years ago, one of his works displayed was made on part of a brown paper bag. I'm not much of an artist, but I've toyed with soft pastels and brown paper bags are wonderful supports for them. True, too, is that he had is soft pastels special-made just for his palette - Sennelier.

That does not make sense to you? Paint should be lightfast( not corrode by light), brushes perfect technique, paper/canvas can make paints brighter and can last hundreds of years, but a palette can be a dinner plate, the paint can be reactivated with water if it dries out and you can cover it with glad press and seal to prevent dust. It doesn't matter what you mix the medium on. If you are just starting with a new medium invest in good tools and quality brands.
@mikel4510
@mikel4510 4 жыл бұрын
@@barcelonachair6487 Precisely - going cheap on anything is BEING cheap, so don't worry about paints or grounds or application tools. A palette is a tool. And convince a water-colorist that a plastic palette is better than a ceramic palette. I dare you to try. Buy what you think you can afford and will work for you. Your paintings are not going to last 100 years, so why buy pay more than you should for paint that will? Or a brush that doesn't do anything any better than a less expensive one. Same with grounds and supports - paper, canvas, gesso, etc.

@@mikel4510 A ziploc bag with a paper plate inside works just as well as a ceramic plate for watercolors. You can go dirt cheap with your palette, but you can't with your papers. Try and use watercolor on copy paper, or construction paper. It's a nightmare. Sometimes the mediums require a heavier paper, and some artists have preferences for the grain and the thickness. A palette is a tool, but you can use anything as a palette. Paints that are easy to work with are going to be expensive, same with paper that doesn't shrivel up. You say artists make no sense, but if you cannot see that art as a hobby can be expensive, then perhaps you are not experienced enough to judge.
@mikel4510
@mikel4510 3 жыл бұрын
@@napstronaut2246 Ummm ... no. Paper plates absorb liquid. Maybe not the instant the water is placed on it, but in a few minutes it begins to absorb. Plus, using them as a palette is environmentally unsound - they can't be recycled due to the pigments. Even if they could, buying one good ceramic palette - or even a ceramic coated tin field palette - will last a lifetime or, if the kids take up the addiction, two lifetimes. "Dirt cheap" ads up to a big pile of bucks over the years, but one or two ceramic palettes will be a one-time cost Watercolor paper is made for watercolor (and other water media) painting. But you don't have to buy Arches or any of the other overpriced brands. There are a number of decent quality machine made watercolor papers on the market that, in the right hands, become a support for wonderful paintings and will last as long as any hand- or mold-made paper. My experience (I've been painting for 30 years) has nothing to do with the facts - a person does not have to spend an inordinate amount of money to be an effective artist. Those who say otherwise are just plain arrogant.
