To execute knee kata guruma with basic grip kata guruma or cross grip kata guruma, doesn’t matter, first you have to create enough space for your movement.
The second one is that your opponent must not me a same sided player like you, because his front leg will stop your entering. So you have to make your opponent stay in opposite or neutral position. These are the etwo golden rules.
I step between the legs of my opponent and use my upper body - my chest and right forearm to push the opponent far away from me. I create enough space for my main movement. In the case, I do Kata guruma with basic grip position - lapel and sleeve, but when I enter I let go of his sleeve and use my left elbow to throw the opponent. With the right hand, I keep taking his lapel. This version imitates kata guruma with a leg grab, but is legal, because you actually don’t take the opponent's leg.
