Welcome to woodcarving! There are so many different hand carving tools available that it can be a little confusing knowing which tools to get. In this video PJ from TreelineUSA.com clearly explains what each of the handcarving tools can do, how to tell them apart, and even offers a recommendation on which tools to start with for a basic set. These few minutes will be well worth your time to give you a basic knowledge to feel more confident when you purchase your first set of tools or when you want to add additional woodcarving tools and supplies to your set. I've been carving for about 6 months now. Could not be happier that I did. Anyways, I have watched countless videos on carving, tool variations, sharpening, and wood selection. This video not only covers all of those things, but it is delivered in an honest and warm way by a guy who isn't just regurgitating facts, but sharing a time honored tradition with all who care to explore it. Well after seeing this great little video and subscribing to your KZfaq channel I was hoping to see more videos. With as much as you sell I thought you might teach “new-B’s” like myself a lot on things like different techniques for all the different ways to carve. Maybe a few downloadable patterns to help some of us to get going and build a little confidence. You know kinda like Beaver Craft does. It’s a great way to get more customers, most of which really stick to brand loyalty. As good as this video was, you have a nice start. Give it some thought.

Any recommendations on best carving tools for lettering? Very basic lettering

There are a few different ways to carve lettering. Some will use a wide V Tool and outline the letters and then drop the background. Others will use a carving knife to outline the letters (to make a stop cut) and then use other gouges to carve away the background. Would I be causing myself more trouble by using hard woods like walnut, maple, and mahogany? I only ask because I have some ideas for some furniture carvings and some functional art pieces that I don't think basswood would be as good for.

Good question. We know people that are carving in harder woods with these tools all the time. You will have to sharpen more often and be more aware of the grain with harder woods, but yes, you can use these tools just fine.

do i need the knives as well as the gouges?

A good carving knife is usually the first tool you get. Gouges are usually purchased over time and based on the projects or textures you need to make. A V-tool (like a 1/4", 60 degree) and U Gouge (#11, 4-6mm) would be common first gouges to get. Feel free to give us a call if you need specific help getting started.

Unfortunately the UK government has decided that every business needs to act as their tax collector and register, collect and remit a 20% VAT on all orders. We are a small business and don't have the resources to work for free for the UK government so we are unable to ship to the UK at this time.
