I read that in 1970s they determined antibiotic resistance in bacteria was caused by the use of herbicides and pesticides on plants. It was thought the same protective mechanisms against the chemical also protected against antibiotics. One explanation of why bacteria found in pristine untouched water sources also show antibiotic resistance
