my old stomping ground - west Texas. a lot of porcupine -was taught to throw a blanket on one as ther go by. they shoot quills and run off then push quills through blanket.

That’s a brilliant technique Skye, l do a similar thing with my hat, you get the best quills that way. Unfortunately they seem to blend in with the road and a lot get killed that way, that’s my usual source. Not the best, the nice long white ones are usually all busted.

Thank you, l have always been interested in that side of my family’s history. As far as the pipe goes, l do top shelf work which takes time and can get pricey, but if you have an idea of what you would want to spend, maybe l could work with that.

@@StockmanOriginal do you have an email I could send my idea to? It's nothing real fancy but I know supplies and your time are valuable. Right now on my fixed income I'm thinking $150 but could probably be more flexible in the near future. Hoping to find something to replace a personal ceremonial pipe I no longer have.

I would like to know how to make a nine point star in quill, thinking doing it on bark would be the way to go. Thanks for your videos, been watching a few to get me started.
@StockmanOriginal
@StockmanOriginal 5 ай бұрын
Hello Hilton, thank you for checking us out! I’m not sure bark would be the best option. Though it would work well for some of the points, others would be lined right up with the grain of the bark causing it to split out. My pick would be deerskin and stitch it down . I would also make a pattern out of paper. You might try looking up Shawn Webster, he’s in our facebook group and does amazing quill work.

Also a way to get the bark ready for bending or flattening what is a easier way with out soaking the bark use a damp cloth towel laid over the peace and use a iron to steam it by going over it try it. It works really quick and helps with controlling the moisture

New to the channel, but instant subscriber-much appreciate the content I’ve seen so far! My question relates to longevity of this type of artwork, since once rehydrated, it would seem that some of the quills may slip, even if previously pressed. Any experience in coating it in a light oil to prevent this? Is it just a non-issue that I’m overthinking? Also, how well does your “homemade” drinkable dye recipe hold up without rub off (sweaty regalia and clothing decorations specifically)?
@StockmanOriginal
@StockmanOriginal 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Chuck, welcome to our tribe!!! It’s great to have you along. In answer to your questions, when you poke the hole through it opens more like a slit and then closes back in on the quill kinda clamping it in place so it holds pretty good. But l probably wouldn’t use this decoration on things that were going to see a lot of water. As for the Kool aid dye, l decorated the back of my hat with quills dyed with it and it held up really well, but I would test it for your self. Those were good questions, l hope l answered them well.
