Basic Sheep Handling for the Veterinary Technician

Күн бұрынThis video starts with the basics of explaining how to properly place a halter on a small ruminant. Also, get the up front reminder to place the flock in a smaller enclosure before trying to catch the animal you are wanting to work with. Once the sheep is caught, we move into the best ways to restrain the sheep for the tasks we are trying to accomplish: standing restraint and rumping. Learn how to rump a sheep by yourself or, if it is a larger breed, how to best accomplish rumping with 2 people. Great nuggets on how to trim feet for sheep and goats and where we would place a subcutaneous injection on a sheep. If you are struggling with blood draws, be sure to hang out for the duration, we wrap up this video with a jugular blood draw!

I really appreciate you doing these videos because I am taking on line vet tech and just reading about the restraints of the animals sometimes it is hard to imagine. I watched the pigs and this one and can't wait to watch more.

Great video. Thanks for the instructions. New (~1 year) into being a small flock owner here in SE Texas trying to learn as much as possible. There aren't a lot of services in our region; so, I've had to be my own vet when the mobile vet (who is normaly an equine vet) isn't available. Being a new sheep person is overwhelming; it's a full time job and, for me, like preparing for final exams every week. IMO, sheep are not low maintenance animals (to anyone thinking about starting a flock). Taking care of God's creatures is our primary responsibility and very rewarding though. I love my little flock of ~20 and appreciate videos like this that give me hope that I can do this and be better every day.

glad you went into the halter as much as you did, im a veterinary student and our professors bunch them up and throw them on the floor before we can get our sheep! very helpful video :)

I have some sheep myself and always struggled with getting them on their butt, so this video helped me a lot since i'm pretty short 😅

Good work. Before inserting the needle we can clean the area with an alcohol swab first.
