Hello John I want to say thank you giving me some hope. I'd been a multi-instrumentalist for the better part of my life. All the usual suspects, Bass, Guitar, Mandolin, Fiddle, Keys, Dobro. Bouzouki, etc. But back in 2013 I suffered an ischemic stroke that almost killed me. It took away my finger dexterity, and hand/arm strength, and some stability in my left side. I was devastated, I'd been a singer, songwriter, and musician all my life (70 + years), and suddenly I can NO longer play anything. Then our son gave me a Cigar Box guitar kit for Christmas 3 years ago. I had been a guitar builder since the 70's so I loved the idea of building one, but the realization that I could no longer play kept me from finishing it, until I saw our videos and the light bulb light up!! I subscribed immediately. I realized the I don't have to form chords with it, I can just "one finger" the notes and try using a slide. Whether this will actually work or not remains to be seen, but at least NOW there's some hope. Thank you. I look forward to watching any of your future videos. God bless: Dave

Excellent job John. Best beginner guitar lessons so far. You just got you a new subscriber. It's nice to know that there's people out there that will show you how to play instead of showing you how well they can play.

Thanks John. I always keep these type of tutorials in my playlist for easy access. I think they're excellent for all player, irrespective of their skill level. They iron out any bad habits that are inevitably picked up over time. I find half an hour or so of exercises each day works wonders.

Wonderful!! I took away a few new things that nobody's told me/called me on. Loved your description of the left hand like jelly and just taking up enough of the weight of the slide to get a clean sound.

Hi, and love your video. It's just what I need. I will be finishing my cigar box guitar today (if the parts come) and really looking forward to getting started on it. I do play the guitar and mandolin but never have played a 3 string cigar box. Just the way to hold it is big for me in your video. My box is going to be VERY small so I see you can hold it the classical way. I'm going to have to do that. It's to short. But I'm ok with that. That's how I originally learned on the guitar. Thanks so much for the video!!

Hi, I want to build a cigar box guitar. Can you tell me how many frets you should have on the neck and is the distance between the but and bridge important. I was going to copy my acoustic guitar.
@edfernandez808

Hi John . . . thanks for sharing, your post rekindled my interest to craft a cigar box. I noticed the frets in your CB which looks like it adopted guitar. If you won't mind, can you give me some points fret to fret distances and the 12/12 distances or the nut to 12th fret and the 12th fret to bridge. Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks and hope to see more of your posts.
@jaybarber68

I got the idea of testing the pitch with a guitar tuner, in case they put the frets in the wrong spot. I’m sure the intonation is good on CBJ’s guitars, but I’m buying a $50 piece of junk. I’ll pick up a good one if I can learn this stuff.

Depends on what tuning you are in as regarding what gauges to use, but at ChickenboneJohn we offer a range of strings, handmade in the UK, specifically made just for cigar box guitar. www.chickenbonejohn.com/collections/guitar-strings

The top string is the highest sounding note, bottom string is the lowest sounding string. That's the normal naming convention for all stringed instruments.
@jaybarber68
@jaybarber68 Жыл бұрын
That’s backwards from a 6 stringer, right?
@ChickenboneJohn
@ChickenboneJohn Жыл бұрын
@@jaybarber68 Not at all. The the naming convention is the same for all instruments in terms of what is the "top" and "bottom" strings. "Top" is highest pitched, "bottom" is the lowest pitched, it has nothing to do with the physical position of the string. Consider a violin or double bass - you cannot define the string as top or bottom by its physical position (a fiddle being held almost horizontal and a bass pretty much vertical), it can only be done by the pitch that the string is tuned to. A lot of guitar players (in my opinion mistakenly) call the string that is physically closest to them the "top" string because it is highest up with respect to the floor, but that makes no sense at all in musical terms.
@jaybarber68
@jaybarber68 Жыл бұрын
@@ChickenboneJohn Thank you very much, I understand you. I took guitar lessons way back in 1978, but she just taught us some open chords (but nothing for the right hand), no strumming patterns. You’re as close as formal training as I ever got! I know nothing about music theory. I’m playing a 1960s Airline acoustic with 3 strings taken off! How much for a genuine Chickenbone, crafted in the Midlands of England?
@jaybarber68
@jaybarber68 Жыл бұрын
@@ChickenboneJohn Oh, yeah, I forgot to say - like a violin, petal and lap steel guitars are the same too. Their strings go from side to side, instead of up and down😀

Why do you call the Bottom string the top? I'm just learning and that just confused me a little?
@ChickenboneJohn
@ChickenboneJohn 4 жыл бұрын
I call the bottom string the bottom string and the top string the top string, because that's the way it is!!! But seriously, when we talk about bottom and top strings, it's about the pitch, so alternatively call them low and high. It is nothing to do with the physical position , it is all to do with the pitch. Think of a violin or a double bass - there is physically no "top" or "bottom" string, it has to refer to pitch, there is no other logical way of referring to it.
