Asthma can be a life threatening disease if not managed well. This training will discuss basic asthma care and management in children. Community organizations working with children will learn what to look for in caring for a child with asthma. Participants will learn how to advocate and provide tools to families and children living with asthma. An overview of asthma resources for children and their families will be provided.
About the Presenters:
Lourdes Juarez, CPNP, MSN is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner whose career has been dedicated to working with the most vulnerable communities. She has cared for young children and adolescents with early onset of chronic disease, including pediatric obesity. She provides care to the homeless, immigrant, asthma and underserved pediatric populations in primary care and divides her time on grant projects focusing on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) and the Center of Excellence on Immigrant Child Health and Wellbeing (CoE). As part of the CoE she co-coordinates the pediatric asylum clinic (The UCSF Pediatric Human Rights Collaborative-East Bay). She has been a clinical preceptor for UCSF PNP graduate students and a mentor to undergraduate students majoring in nursing, nutrition, or health care in general. Many of her mentees are underrepresented groups who are first generation, like herself, to college or have been historically underrepresented in health care. She works at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Primary Care clinic and is a UCSF Assistant Clinical Professor from the School of Nursing. She received her Master of Nursing (MSN) degree from UCSF and Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) from UCLA.
Robert Mok spent over 15 years in the high-tech industry until he decided to pursue a nursing degree, and earned his LVN in 2005. He started as a clinical nurse at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Claremont Primary Care Clinic in Feb 2006 before transitioning to the Asthma team. His focus has been on providing comprehensive asthma education for both in-patient and out-patient settings. As a certified Asthma Educator, he is deeply committed to empowering patients and educating medical residents on asthma management.
Beyond his clinical responsibilities, he also serves as a lead clinical research coordinator (CRC) and research nurse, overseeing a dedicated team of four. Together, we are engaged in a variety of research studies spanning areas such as vaccines, asthma, and social determinants of health.
Currently, his primary focus lies on projects such as ORBEX, PEARLS, CARE, EAGLE, and HERO, each contributing valuable insights into asthma and adverse childhood experiences. Past endeavors include significant studies like GALA II, SAGE II, INFANT/AVICA, BARD, STICS, APRIL/OCELOT and Safety and Immunogenicity of Sequential Rotavirus Vaccine Schedules with RotaTeq® and Rotarix®
