THE BASICS OF COLOR THEORY
HUE
The term hue simply means a particular color.
PRIMARY COLORS
The primary colors: red, yellow, and blue are the foundation of the color wheel. Nothing can be mixed to create these colors, but they are mixed to create all other colors on the wheel.
SECONDARY COLORS
Secondary colors come from mixing the primaries, yellow and red make orange, red and blue make violet, blue and yellow make green.
TERTIARY COLORS
The tertiary colors involve the mixing of a primary color and a secondary color such as red violet, red orange, yellow orange, etc.
VALUE
Value refers to the lightness or darkness of a hue, independent of the color.
SATURATION
Saturation refers to the intensity of a color - for example, orange is very saturated.
TEMPERATURE
Temperature refers to whether a color is warm or cool. The colors on the blue half are cooler while colors on the orange half are warmer.
COLOR SCHEMES
Color harmonies are colors that typically work well together and create a sense of unity.
COMPLEMENTARY
complimentary colors are those which are across from each other on the color wheel: blue and orange, yellow and violet, green and red.
MONOCHROMATIC
Monochromatic color schemes use only one color in a variety of value and saturation, such as only orange.
ANALOGOUS
analogous color schemes use colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, such as blue, blue green, and green.
TRIADIC
Triadic color schemes utilize three colors that are all equidistant on the color wheel, such as orange, violet, and green.
