My Tumbler is the Lortone 3A Model. It is currently 11 years old, and still runs great! You will also need steel shot, enough water to cover your shot, and some cleaning agent, such as 1 drop of pure castile soap, 2 Tbsp of Ivory bar soap shavings, a drop of Dawn dish soap, or another cleaning agent safe for use in jewelers tumblers. Add your jewelry, and tumble it for 1-2 hours for a great burnish!
Stones that are safe to tumbler are any lab grown quartz, sapphires and rubies, Cubic Zirconia, and diamonds. Any natural stones that are heavily included may fracture during the tumbling process, so it's better to create your jewelry and tumble it first, and then secure your stone.
Reasearch and decide what is best for you!

Thanks for the information. I have been doing wire wrap for a year now and wanted to use a tumbler to polish. I was going to buy one at Harbor Freight; but after listening to you I am going to invest in a Lortone 300.

I use quite a few SOFT stones in my work (pearls, opals jade etc) and never use a tumbler... i purchased a SOFT brass bristle brush (really really soft) and along with a few drops of dawn dishsoap and the kitchen sink its cleans all my jewelry i make up. it even cleans the patina off the parts i want to highlight... as i almost never finish a second piece before cleaning the prior one it works well for me.

I read about how to make an industrial tumbler out of a rear axle of a big semi truck with the rims and tires in place. You want to cut an opening in the highest part of the rim to load rocks. The article said a cover is not needed but I always thought if I was going to do one I would have a hinged door sealed with inner tube rubber. The idea is to set up a motor geared down so the tires rotates slowly and all the rocks stay in the lowest part of the tire at all times tumbling over each other. Each tire can hold about 100 lbs of rocks and you have 4 tires going at all times each one with a different grit. Always use same tire for the same grit. You rotate the rocks once a week and you have a 100 lbs of polished tumbled stones each week. I have been wondering if you could use quartz sand as grit for the first stage to do the rough rounding off? I am posting this on all videos about rock hounding to spread the idea, if this is you channel and you do not like that let me know. The fact that the tumbling will all take place in a rubber tire should help keep the noise down. The rocks should never touch the rim. I have suggested to people that they make a sound proof shed just big enough to be practical so the noise will be minimized. Plus the rubber in a tire is thick and should absorb a lot of the noise. Also you should have a small fan on the motor to keep it cool. A high quality motor will be a must as it will run 24 hours a day. I am no expert but with the proper gearing the motor should not be under too much stress. I would sell the tumbled stones. Once tumbled, you grade them by quality and type. Some would be really valuable. I bet you could average $10 usd per pound with just good found material and more if you have high grade material. Definitely not for the weekend rock hound but if you sell stones or want to, what a cheap way to start. You could tumble other people's rocks for a fee or shares too. You could make one with car tires for a smaller scale operation. There has to be a lot of people with a 30 year in the making, 3 ton pile of rocks out behind their house. With this they could see results from all that collecting.

Thanks for the informative video! This is great. I've been thinking about getting a tumbler but I've never seen the results in person. I do metal stamping on mostly aluminum blanks. I've heard it hardens the metal and also gives it a polished shine. Is that correct? Are those the main reasons for using it?
@AubreyBouck_Brandavir
@AubreyBouck_Brandavir 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the little steel shot beads in the tumbler gently hit and rub the metal surface, and burnish it, which makes it really shiny. It also "work hardens" the metal a little bit. I think aluminum hardens faster than silver!

Hi Aubrey, thank you for the tumbling video. I have questions! I work in mostly in copper and sterling silver, and wonder if it is ok to use the same shot for different metals? Say I tumble a batch of copper- can I rinse the shot and then use it to tumble silver? The last time I tumbled silver, it came out yellow-ish, almost like it was tarnished. I had previously tumbled copper in my Lortone, using ceramic shot, and am wondering if that is why my silver came out a funny color. I used ceramic shot, as I was concerned the stainless would be too hard on the woven wire pendant...which brings up another question. Can I tumble woven wire? If so, should I use ceramic shot or the mixed-shape stainless shot? I invested a lot $$ in my Lortone, yet I rarely use it because I'm not sure if my wire weaving/wrapping will be damaged by the shot. Thanks for any help or tips! I love your videos!!

I tumble all my pieces in the stainless steel, even my wire woven items! And I do tumble different metals, copper, brass, and silver, all with the same tumbler, but it is a good idea to rinse it out between, like you said. I've never used ceramic, so I can't tell you if its better or worse, but Yes, I do tumble the woven pieces with the stainless, and I've never seen anything break or dent. I hope this helps!

Hi Aubrey, Thanks for the tips for tumbling. Just wondering is there anything special you have to do when you first get your tumbler before using it ? I've heard when you wash it out for the first time that some people use a can of flat coke. Apparently this helps to get rid of the residual from the bowl ??? Can you let us know what we should do when we first get a tumbler. Cheers for your help with this :)

Hi. Can I tumble laser cut acrylic or Cellulose Acetate or Celluloid jewelry pieces to round their edges? Will the finish shiny polished? Thanks
@AubreyBouck_Brandavir
@AubreyBouck_Brandavir 4 жыл бұрын
I have never tried tumbling those materials before. I think steel shot would ruin them, but maybe if you had the right kind of tumbling medium, I bet it can be done. Please research more about tumbling acrylics, maybe you can find your answer!

Now mine is a 12 lb capacity rubber barrel, and for gold(much harder metal than silver), I'll tumble two or three days, or until desired polish is achieved.I change the solution twice in twenty four hours, using my hand to stir down to the bottom until the water runs clear. The time is going to be dependent on how rough the pieces start out. tumbling is for burnishing a "smooth" piece to a pretty good finish prior to high polishing on a buffing wheel. Silver burnishes much quicker, I'd guess 1/3 of the time of gold. I pre finish my pieces with rubber abrasives, and remove all traces of the rubber residue, before tumbling. And don't skimp on burnishing compound, use the proper one, this thing saves so much time, trying to cheat/cheap, doesn't make sense.
@terryaultman2339
@terryaultman2339 5 жыл бұрын
The proper burnishing compound is designed for tumbling, it doesn't break down nearly as fast as "dish soap"! if you must skimp, TSP works better than dish soap. find it in the paint section at hardware stores. it doesn't "break down" very fast either.

I’m confused. You said shine it up and then patina and throw it back in? I’m just about to use my Lortone 3A for the first time. Doesn’t it take oxidation off?

great info esp on the stones...is there an alternative to using a tumbler?...im fairly new and collecting tools is a slow process...until i win the lottery that is:)...i didnt even know about tumbling til i saw your september bracelette...which is absolutely gorgeous btw...that shine you got after made quite a difference and wondering how i can get close. tfs:)

I didn't always have a tumbler, either, they are an investment! But I don't know of an alternative besides an even more expensive belt polisher. Unless you have a dremel, and then you can buy small rubber polishing bits, but it will still be a little different.

Aubrey Bouck thanks aubrey, probably better to wait and invest. ill work up my upper body strength til then lol...i can usually get a 'rustic' polish but wow what a difference a tumbler makes. thx for reply and tips for dremel attachments:).

Interesting formula. I now have a 45C - NR (also a Lortone and called a Gem Sparkle). I got the tumbler out of family storage and my Dad who used it is long gone. All I know from the downloaded manual from the manufacturer's site is that it is a 4 lb. barrel. I am still doing research and have not used it yet. I'm a little shocked that it was so expensive (according to their catalogue about $145.00 US, so you can add another $20.00 for Canadian pricing and more for shipping). I think he only used it once since there is only a small amount of polished agates around. We collected about 20 lbs of agates from a secluded beach about 58 years ago, so I guess I'd better get cracking.
