Willis Reed, Jr. (born June 25, 1942) is an American retired basketball player, coach and general manager. He spent his entire professional playing career (1964-1974) with the New York Knicks. In 1982, Reed was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1996, he was voted one of the "50 Greatest Players in NBA History".
After retiring as a player, Reed served as assistant and head coach with several teams for nearly a decade, then was promoted to General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations (1989 to 1996) for the New Jersey Nets. As Senior Vice President of Basketball, he led them to the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003.

Those early 70s Knicks were a beautiful team to watch. Willis Reed was a beast. He had the jumper, the hook, the inside moves, the pump fakes, quickness, solid rebounding, and he was a great leader. I loved watching him play. Those playoff battles against Kareem, I remember Willis more than holding his own. Don't know the stat comparison, but the eyeball test revealed that he battled Kareem well, which few, or any could at that time.

Willis had a complete arsenal!!! He had an excellent Jump Shot, hook shot and driving moves. We can see that Kareem never knew what Willis was going to do next!!! Lol!!!

He was my hero growing up. And since they had that incredible 18 game winning streak in 1970 they were always on ABC television. I’ll never forget watching game 7 on May 8th at my grandparents apt in the Marina in San Francisco

The most underrated great player ever!! Willis is #14 all-time on the list of greatest players ever. Period! Not too many can argue that he wasn't Top 15 all-time

I grew up in NYC and he was awesome! Strong, skilled and determined, Willis helped the Knicks win the two NBA titles!

He was also MVP of the Maurice Stokes Benefit game just before the 1969-70 season started.. so 4 MVPs in one year (Stokes game, All Star, Reg. Season and Playoffs)

@@ice_man81 legendary rick Barry was not a center. Rick Barry was like pre Larry bird, Rick Barry won an nba championship almost by himself in 1975

The 1970 NBA Finals was interesting - I'd thought even with a healthy Reed, the Lakers should have overpowered the Knicks. They were stacked on paper with West, Baylor, and Chaimberlain - and they'd just come off a Finals appearance last season, losing to the Celtics in a major upset. They should've been uber-motivated not to be beat again.

Key words: On paper. Knicks were the better team, that is, 5 guys playing as a unit. And skill wise they were not that far apart. REmember, Wilt was coming off ankle surgery and was not mobile at all, he seemed, as I remember it, often uncoordinated, like a pre-season game. Also, look at the match-ups: 1. Garrett vs. Frazier - Uh....come on. 2. West vs. Barnett - on paper, West. But watching the films you see Barnett (who was known as a great defensive player) preventing West from touching the ball for long periods, especially in the first half of Game 7. And Barnett could score if needed. GUARDS: Advantage, KNICKS 3. Erickson /Hairston - Bradley/Russell - Whatever you thought of the Lakers smalls Bradley gave the Knicks EXACTLY what they needed: an outside shooting forward who could rebound, dribble, and play defense. Cazzie Russell was instant offense off the bench. 4. Baylor-DeBusshere - Baylor, one of my all-time favorite players, was past his prime and lacked both the speed and strength to keep up with Dave DeBusshere. FORWARDS: Advantage: KNICKS 5. WILT - REED Wilt, as I have said, was not at his best as he was just coming off ankle surgery, and, during these years, at his best was a superman. CENTER: Advantage: KNicks. BENCH: Not close: Knicks. So you see, even on paper, (or computer screen) the actual talent....well...theirs a good argument that the Knicks were actually the more talented team.

What helped the Knicks win was "ball movement - player movement". People talk about this all the time ... but the Knicks actually did it!!!!

L.a lakers should won 🏆in 1969 nba championship over 35 years bill Russell, wilt should have score 30s point, 1970s l.a lakers vs ny knick, both wilt& willis reed were hurt, , wilt should have taken advantage of willis reed bad knee by runing up and down the court game 7, they miss gail Goodrich

If Willis doesn't hurt his knee in 1971 and played healthy until 35 or so, the Knicks would have won 5 titles. Ewing is nothing compared to Reed who would play a young Lew Alcindor man to man and then an old bald Jabbar would dominate Ewing and intimidate him.

Thats a bold statement! 5 titles? My brother loved the Knicks and I liked Jerry West, Baylor and Chamberlain. Looking back, they were probably the better team overall-- younger,well coached and Reed was a strong, mobile center until his knees gave out. I used to buy a pack of cards with a stick of bubble gum in the wrapper and knew all the players in the NBA. The next year('71)was strange when the Bullets played Alcindor (Jabbar)and Milwaukee in the finals and not the Knicks.The knicks were a complete team from the starters to the bench. But it would have been very ,very difficult to win even three titles back then. Don't forget that the Celtics had started to get strong again in the East. Visiting MSG was a magical experience for me and my friends!

@@youtuber3328 I think your thoughts on those categories of the 1970's is a fair comment. Who else averaged around 18.7 rebounds a game from 1970 to 73 like Wilt did and he played slightly less in the regular season in those years taking a little rest averaging around 43 minutes a game? Up to 1969 he averaged around 47 minutes a game in the regular season so if you divide 43 by 10 you get back to his average up to 1969 and that would of made his rebound average 20.6 a game! His last playoff year of 1973 he played 17 games and averaged 47.1 minutes and 22.5 rebounds. Who else was a 22.5 rebounder on average? Shaq O'Neal averaged 11.6 rebounds a game in the playoffs over his career, Wilt averaged 24.5 rebounds! We have no clue what Wilt averaged in block shots but I remember the last game of the 1972 playoffs against the Knicks and Wilt must of blocked 9 shots and altered many others in that game with a bad hand. It's not excessive to make the claim that Wilt averaged 6 blocks a game in his career if not more! Mark Eaton was a good shot blocker averaging 4.4 blocks over 36 minutes or 5.5 if he played 45 minutes like a Wilt would so 5.5 blocks was dam good! In terms of scoring, George Gervin was great in the 1970's but played what 4 years in the ABA. He averaged around 27 a game in his 1970's NBA career. Jerry West was aging but still averaged around 27 a game the five years he and Jabbar played against one another. The Bucks Alcondor/Jabbar averaged 30.4 and around 26 a game as a Laker up to 1980 so he was probably close to 28.8 or so in the decade of the 1970's. I don't remember anyone better? Bob McAdoo as a Brave and Knick was probably around 28 a game but his last year of the decade he was down to around 20 which lowered his average! That is why I said FAIR, it's a very fair or accurate comment!
