I'm from the United States and as much as I watch the NBA, FIBA rules are a lot better because those rules allow and respect the fundamentals in the game. As with the NBA they water down some of fundamentals of game. For instance, Defensive 3 second violation is just a way to discourage guys from playing solid defensive basketball for the sake of high-scoring entertainment.

Jump balls should only be jump balls if the teams can choose the jumpers. There's nothing to be gained by a center and a point guard jumping it up. The biggest differences for me are: 1) the ability to stay as much as you want in the pain on defense, which makes it important to play with a big man in FIBA 2) the shortest but rounder three point line 3) the traveling call 4) the 40 minutes games instead of 48, without stoppage of the clock (less time to make up for a lead) 5) the basket interference rule (which also makes it important to have big men, in combination with the fact that they stay in the paint)

Some more differences; block/ charge situations are different, basically in favor of the defensive team, charges are called more often. Time-outs can only be called by the coach when either the ref blowed his whistle or the opponent scored, not while the game is active. Om flopping, referees are allowed to give a technical foul and they do that in Fiba, so the NBA player should watch out for that ;). Not only a clear path to the basket foul will be called unsportmanlike (UF C4), its also a UF when there is a foul in a break when the ball is not tried to play. An inbounce foul by the defender in the last 2 mins of Q4 is called unsportmanlike and there is way more contact allowed, so the game is more physical. Also the backcourt rule is different. In the NBA, you can throw a throw in from the frontcourt to the backcourt. In Fiba you have to throw a throw in from the front court to a attacker in the frontcourt, otherwise it’s a backcourt violation (The ones you gave are all correct, good job!)
@cptfwiffo
@cptfwiffo 2 жыл бұрын
Fiba has actually separate notions of interference and goaltending. Goaltending regards to hitting the ball after a shot. Interference regards hitting the basket or backboard (or, even, the tower, I think), in such a way that it impacts the chance of the ball going in (according to the ref). (so blindly hitting the backboard on a shot, and that shot hits, say, the top of the backboard with zero chance of ever going in, then it's nothing)

I think the question basically starts from what are the leagues in Europe compared to the NBA. European teams play for the national championship: if they finish at the bottom of the standings they are relegated to the lower division, if they are in the top positions they enter European competitions. So it is decisive to win not only to have the national title, but also to have the opportunity to access international competitions and, above all, to avoid relegation. The NBA is a championship closed in on itself, which has lost its being a sport to become a show and has finished bowing to the demands of showbusiness I'm Italian, former basketball player but I love this sport since I started practicing it 50 years ago. I loved the NBA with Karim and Magic and Bird, the NBA at the time had stars but it also had teams, there was team play...which you can see again a little with Luca: look the shocked faces of the opponents when Luca passes the ball instead of shooting

Honestly, could go either way on this as to who's rules I like more. I'm a fan of the OG notion of 1 standard, 1 basketball bible, that is adhered to by all. This is what the game's founder incisions, and you see this in many of the original rule books. I'd like to see FEBA work with the NBA to find universal standards to smooth the differences in games. This would build a better game, in my opinion. The game these days takes a lifetime of development. To have one hard fast rule be present all the way through childhood to suddenly be different in an adult arena can vastly inhibit proper growth in skill and mindset as player grown from children to adults.

Yes, the 3 pt line is technically closer by 1.5 cm (half an inch) from the corners, this just makes the FIBA line more consistent around the arc than the NBA line which ranges from 23'9" (7.4 m) from the top to 22'(6.7 m) from the corners. However, the FIBA 3pt line has changed in the last couple of years to where it needed to get closer in the corners since they extended it from the top: you simply would not have enough room to shoot from the corners if it measured 6.75 m from the corners as well.

@8wayz2shine
@8wayz2shine 2 жыл бұрын
@@austinclark6385 The FIBA measurements are done in line with the court size. They are not arbitrary. Having the same distance from any point from the basket makes sense and does not give you easy shots from the side as it happens in the NBA. They will need to expand the court if they use the NBA size which I am not sure the NBA will want - bigger court, more time to traverse it but also more space for attackers to utilize. They should simply adapt the normal FIBA size in my opinion.
@JCPRuckus
@JCPRuckus 2 жыл бұрын
@@8wayz2shine - Nah, anything that can make 3pt heavy analytics ball less prevalent is the right direction. Wider court to eliminate short corner 3s, and maybe even keep making it wider so you can push the 3pt line back even further. As an update to #6: we no longer use the term "cylinder" when talking about basket interference in FIBA; the only thing that matters is whether the ball is touching the basket /ring or not with a chance to go in when/if the Off or Def contacts the basket, net, or backboard. Also, there is a slight difference between FIBA and NBA when it comes to the ball contacting the backboard on a shot: in the NBA once it touches the backboard you can't touch it, but in FIBA the ball has to be completely above the rim when contact occurs for there to be goaltending.

The biggest problem is that NBA refs dont call this type of travels anymore and they cant understand the concept of gathering the ball, they think you can move forward and make several steps without dribbling the ball because you didnt gather the ball (which is wrong)because if you are moving forward sooner or later you will carry the ball...

So the 'zero step' actually also exists in FIBA from i think the 2019-2020 season. When a player is in motion and takes control of the ball while in midair (so not with one foot on the floor) the first step you take is called the 'gather step' or 'zero step', your next step will count as the first step so the rule applies as explained in the video. Meaning you can only have 2 steps to finish or, when dribbling, you have to release the ball before your first step.

Another difference is on allowed fouls per quarter before penalty free throws (aka, bonus). In any quarter, FIBA always allows 4, and the 5th is penalized. In overtime, foul count from 4th quarter is not reset. In NBA, when the clock is less than 2 min in any quarter, only 1 unpenalized is allowed if the team has committed less than 4 fouls. In OT, foul count is reset and each team is allowed 3 fouls before bonus. Same rule of clock under 2 minutes applies.

Simple: NBA rules allow players to perform more exhibitions, thus attracting fans and increasing the Association's budget as a result. Europe, it's all about the team effort, there are rarely any players that would be considered all stars, super stars. Even players like Luka, while he showed his skills during his time in Europe, he didn't average 26.8pts 8.5rebounds and 8 assists per game (his career averages), he just couldn't have, it's not the same playstyle. Also, the difference between two teammates' salaries is not that large. You won't find a player in Europe earning 30-40mil per year while his teammate earns 1-2million. The disparity of this proportion doesn't exist and no one is treated much better than the next guy. And the referees certainly won't call fouls on "better" players. All players are treated equally in Europe. The same cannot be said for the NBA whereas a superstar will almost always be able to draw a foul, while some average NBA player attempting to do the same will probably result in a turnover, miss, but basically a no-call from the refs.

Same thing like the foreign players adjust themselves when they come into the NBA,also NBA players adjust themselves when they play on the Olympics and World Championships...it's really not that big of a deal. You can see the resaults after all. From '92-'00 and from '08-'20 team USA took the gold medals.

European players have no problem adapting to the NBA, their technical and tactical foundations are stronger than in the NBA, most Europeans who play in the NBA feel that it is easier to play there than in the European leagues.

Being European I would like the NBA to adopt some rules which benefit more efficient defending ; Abolition of the def. 3-seconds , stricter traveling rules and unsportsmanlike fouls . As for FIBA , 2 good NBA - styled adaptations would be the introduction of coach's challenges per will and the revision of timeouts being called wherever a coach thinks is suitable instead after ONLY having ball possession .

As a player FIBA rules are so much better. NBA rules make for a better viewing experience. They should switch timeouts to the FIBA format tho. Way better for everyone

Fiba rules are better and should be adopted by the nba except for the 3 point line and court size

the 3 point line makes sense because it should be the same distance at all points. and also why not use metric units, it just makes life easy

You missed a lot in there, and got stuff wrong. The FIFA 3 point line is not the same the whole way around, this changed years ago. You mention tech fouls, but not how they differ from unsportsmanlike, 1 verse 2 free throws and both include possession, you didn’t mention that both are included in you 5 person fouls. Goal tend is not just after the ball hits the backboard, but also downward motion. Timeout can only be called at stoppages, by the coach. Free throw shooter has 5 second not 10, to shoot, RIP Giannis, and the shooter and players outside the three can not move in full the ball hit the ring. The jump ball alternates, an important point you complete miss explained. A possession arrow is used with alternating possession after the initial jump.

FIBA Technical Fouls are just 1 free throw, they dropped the possession part in 2018

Only thing I don’t like about FIBA rules are the basket interference. I think the NBA could stand to adopt some of FIBA’s rules to keep the pace of the game moving a lot better but then FIBA needs to adopt basket inference rules of the NBA. I don’t see flopping in FIBA which I completely dislike about most NBA games. Flopping should be a technical foul in any league. I am a bit mixed on the defensive three second rule. One thing for sure you would not see smaller guards getting as many layups and favor the three point shooters in the league.
