Check this lesson from John Crews on how to take turns with a bass boat. He starts from the very basics of what makes a boat turn and goes into details on how to make higher speed turns. Bass boats are very fast and powerful machines so be very respectful of the power and speed on the water. John is driving a Bass Cat Boats, Eyra model, with a Mercury 250 Pro XS four stroke engine in this video.

I learned a while back if you drop the trim and the throttle at the same time, you can learn the timing on your boat to when it crests the hole and keep trimming down as you yank the steering all the way to a direction, bottom out the trim as you slam back into the throttle except now your facing the opposite direction and your co angler is probably in another zip code by the time you leave your hole shot.

Thanks for the video. I’m brand new to boating. My 7 year old joined the fishing team at school, so I went and bought a new boat. It does have hydraulic steering and it’s very difficult to turn left at speed. I called the dealership and they said that’s normal. It doesn’t feel normal. Any advice on that for a newbie?

So I'll try to keep this short. I have a 86 aluminum boat with a 60 2stroke and I run down the creek alot with fast sweeping turns and 180 hairpins (with stumps and trees 10 feet from each side). Would it be best if I just trim it all the way down and leave it. I don't need the extra trim up speed. 35 through it is kinda sketchy. Had some close encounters with MISTRIMMING and was a couple feet from a tree due to blowing out/sliding. I haven't mastered trimming and Wondering if staying trimmed down would help keep the boat "sticking" to the path

I wish I would've had this for last week on the water. I just got a skeeter zx185c with a 175 yamaha and that boat scoots. This is my first fast boat and I'm having to get used to the trim. Last week I was maybe halfway trimmed up and going 45 mph and it started to loose bite in the turn like you were saying. From everything I've learned running this boat recently if anything starts to happen just trim down. I did and went away like you said but definitely scared me a little bit. I think the skeeters have a lot more bow lift that other brands anyway so it's getting a lot of getting used to. I trim that thing up until I get uncomfortable lol (no rooster tail on mine though with the way the jack plate is set up) it's crazy compared to rangers that I've been in that ride completely flat always.

New bass boat owner here with maybe a dumb question. My manual says to avoid trimming really far down because it can cause plowing and that it could increase spinouts. I think I hear you saying the opposite. Could you explain what they mean? I typically only run my boat at 35mph currently, at that speed do I even have to worry about it? Thanks
@JohnCrews
@JohnCrews 3 жыл бұрын
At top speed, if you trim down and cut the wheel hard, you could induce the boat to spin out. At slower speeds, trimming down to turn is preferred

Good video and I hate to be picky but about 2 minutes in........... When you turn your steering wheel to the starboard side, your motor turns to the port side (opposite direction). Then motor thrust to the port side pushes rear of boat so bow goes to the starboard. None of this really matters in the end because if you turn wheel to right, boat goes to the right. Lol.

I'm going to be " that guy " even though this was a very informative video. You failed to make the most important step and that is to always attach the kill switch lanyard cord especially if you know that you are going to be going fast or in an area where you will be making turns and if there are other boats in the water. Years ago I was fishing a lake in Northern Indiana and forgot to hook up and heading to the ramp another boat came in front of me and threw a huge wake that rocked my boat and threw me out in a split second. I am lucky to be alive as the boat was circling towards me. I wish all videos that explain boating would include the importance of the lanyard .Peace

Life jacket zippers are not made to withstand impacts if thrown from a boat. If you are going to do instructional videos, please do it with all the best safety in mind. People watch you and other anglers run around on your personal youtube videos with poor safety and they think it is OK. Trust me, after you lose a brother or friend, you will change your mind.
