In this week's episode, we're back in the rivers, on the mainland, hiding away from some bad weather. We get stuck into some British 'Sea Bass' fishing and then some Cornish knife making with a local knife smith, who takes us on a guided tour of his homeland.

It does happen from time to time unfortunately; I have hooked a couple myself. Cormorants are actually worse in my experience as you can't see them as easily when they are hunting under water. I switched to barb-less hooks for this very reason; easier to get out but you do lose more fish.

You tell great stories and you do it so well, and in high resolution no less! I visited near the Cornwall region back in '72 while in Plymouth Harbor for a NATO Exercise Pre-Conference. After the planning conference, I hopped on the bus and rode out towards Cornwall to West Looe and walked around the area. I didn't get to see much, but hope it was representative of that coastal area of southern England. I took lots of pics of W. Looe and Plymouth. I know you probably think they are all glass plate daguerreotypes back in those days but they are actually something called "slides". They worked well but were slow to see results and expensive! ;)
@Neilhuny
@Neilhuny 2 жыл бұрын
Haha, love the daguerreotype comment - I remember slides well and suspect I am much the same age as you. West Looe is a good guide to what the rest of Cornwall is like. I'm pleased to hear you took the opportunity to have a look around. I worked with an American chap in London who only visited a large American airbase an hour north (Mildenhall) at the weekend so that he could buy food he recognised, go to American cinemas and bowing alleys, talk only to Americans etc. It seemed rather sad that he had no interest in what London has to offer in terms of history, museums, art galleries, theatres, night life etc etc. Having said that, his wife was v senior (I forget - a major or a general) involved in planning & organising the 1st Gulf War, so maybe he had no choice but to be at Mildenhall?
@bdphourde
@bdphourde 2 жыл бұрын
@@Neilhuny Well, my Dad was career military as was I so I traveled all my life and loved it. I wouldn't miss the chance to see as much of the world as I am permitted. It's actually the reason I decided to own a sailboat. I'm glad W. Looe was representative of the area. That is where I first encountered the on-beach tent cabanas in which people rent to stay WARM in an English Summer! I also later rented a van and took a few of my friends and their visiting spouses on a little drive up to Edinburgh! So we saw a lot and shared some great fun! It seems I walked all over Plymouth and the time in the south of England was all clear blue skies over a week! l now assume that was probably an oddity. I commend Cadoha for wanting to show off the English coastline to the world. I had also spent some wonderful time in London during a travel study program after my 3rd year in college in '67. I fell for a beautiful Swedish girl I met while walking around the London Zoo! So the British Isles leave me good memories. Always wondered what happened to Britte. Lost touch with her after I joined the Marines a month later. I also went back to England later in the '80s for a week-long Joint Electronic Warfare Symposium held at RAF Mildenhall, if that is where your "Royal Air Force Academy" is located. I seem to remember seeing some U.S. EF-111s operating around the area. I'm 75.

@Neilhuny 2 жыл бұрын
@@bdphourde You've had a great life by the sound of it, with lots of travel and very interesting tasks! That Electronic Warfare Symposium sounds extremely interesting! I think you must have been at RAF Cranwell which is where the academy is. It is near RAF Mildenhall, but the latter is nearly pure America. Only American military, planes etc and lots of them - apparently dollars and not pounds are used within it...
