Thanks for your message! I think I understand now. "Pocket" refers to your groove or the "Feel". To me that's most important. You can have all the speed in the world, but if the feel isn't there it is wasted. Thanks for teaching!

Excellent advice Joe! I am a guitarist with 40+ years of experience who recently switched to bass. Bass is a totally different animal! I'm so glad I learned to play rudimentary drums so long ago when my bands used to practice in my parents basement. I say either you got natural rythm or you don't. It's hard to feel it if you don't have it. ;-) I sarted on Short Scale basses, and now have mid scale and full scale basses as well. I have very small hands and not sure I will ever be able to play a full scale bass well. Thanks for sharing.
@CoolBear7779 жыл бұрын
Tony Rocker There is some truth to that, Tony. I think we can reset our internal clocks, somewhat. I don't play a full-scale bass properly, but I'm always trying! LOL Thank you so very much for watching! All the best to you! Take care.

Thanks Joe. Excellent instruction. It never fails to amaze me how many of the worlds best musicians also play either drumset or other percussion instruments or both. eg: Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Prince, Paul McCartney, yourself etc etc. Having a strong sense of "Groove" is the only thing that is going to make a musician sound solid. Love your playing Joe, thanks for sharing. Chris Brien.

Sorry to hear about the pain you must be in! Kudos to you for not quitting!! In my experience, your "clock" or "meter" is very different from being "in the pocket". I've heard drummers with great time and no feel. Conversely, I've worked with drummers with a great groove or "pocket" that pushes and pulls ever so slightly that makes music "trance-like" to where you can't help but feel something in the music! The drummers are feeling your "groove". Keep doing what you're doing! All the best!!

This is a thing I became aware of when I went from solo guitar to bass guitar... I realized that now I am between the guitars and the drums, so I HAVE to think like both of them! As far as the guitars go, I had no problem about that, but the rhythm/drum part was a new thing to me, and boy - I got addicted to bass since!!! Bass players, do not forget - you are in between the guitars and the drums! Gotta find that middle ground and when you find what you wanted to reach, hold on to it!

@ZZombyWooff10 жыл бұрын
yes. I just realized it couple of days ago. i started tapping the bass like i would play bongo drums :) I come from playing guitar and I really didnt have any clue how to play bass, bt now it's getting better with these youtube tutorials. I'm starting to sound like a bass player. I want to master both instruments!
@gordon1smith11 жыл бұрын
I came from the "world of the double bass", so I've always approached the electric bass left hand in the same way as the double bass left hand. I use "1-2-4" fingering (1 - index finger, 2 - middle finger, 4 - pinky) up to the 11th fret. IMO good left hand technique means the pinky is at a right angle to the neck (along with the second and third fingers) and the first (index) finger reaches back. That should work with the shape of your hand. Keep your left hand relaxed. Keep loving music.

As far as playing in a band, (I'm primarily a guitarist learning some bass) I really listen for that driving bass guitar when I'm playing rhythm. This really helps me find my down beat and keep in time while singing. Bassists! listen to this man's words of wisdom!

True, listen to your drummer, listen carefully to the all the part (kick, snare, hi-hats, etc..) and you'll never go wrong. Go crazy on the drum roles, put cool melodic fills here and there, but always stay locked to the basic rythme and it will always sound cool.

Thanks, Joe. Just prior to finding this, I've been kicking in some "thud" harmonics, such as on the low D and E on the A string, not trying to play a note, but keeping rhythm. It's been teaching me more about rhythm. Sometimes not playing a note, but playing the "thud." Does that make sense for me to experiment with that?
@LCross312 жыл бұрын
Great advice, Joe, thank you. I'm originally a keyboard player but I recently started learning bass...my new favorite instrument. Something I've learned in the studio is this: No matter how good a keyboard player's left hand may be, s/he will NEVER be able to reproduce the sound or feel of a real bass. I love the bass and I'm learning a lot from your tutorials. Thank you. Keep 'em coming!

I wish more bass teachers would emphasize this lesson. In fifteen years of playing drums in bands professionally, I had TWO bassists that would lock in with me, so I switched. This seems to be a lesson that a lot of bass teachers (or wannabe bass teachers) forget.

@drummerguy1888 I started out playing the bass in the 70s when I was 16 and moved to the guitar at 21 though I still play the bass. I learned to play the keys when in a cover band in the 80s as someone had to do it. After playing with enough drummers over the years I picked up the sticks in the mid 90s. I never mastered the drums or keys - have I mastered any of them?...No, but I try my hand at any instrument I can because it keeps me fresh. I don't grow bored with any of it at 52.

Funny to see this, I've been playing the drums for 9 years before picking up my first bass a week ago, I've already made some progress and your videos have helped me a bunch, off course I'm not that good right now, and a lot of your video's still don't make a lot of sense to me, since I have no knowledge of scales and stuff, but I'm getting there! Thanks a lot!

I've practiced conga and drum patters lifted right off videos here, or from the book "Afro-Cuban Grooves for Bass and Drums" by Robby Ameen and Lincoln Goines. I think it fosters a better understanding of rhythm. It can't hurt to know exactly what the drummer is doing and be able to kinda replicate it on the bass.
