A sample pack of these triggered by some bass pedals would make someone's prog rock dreams come true.

Omg what a wonderful instrument! Thank you so much for sharing this, I had no idea about the beautiful lows being produced as I always separated the higher notes as a different one, maybe the sustain on the lows had something to that effect, but in a band situation, especially orchestral, where the sound is blended, it is hard sometimes to know which sounds are coming from where and I truly did not expect this. FWIW I've been playing my congas for almost 50 years, my talking drums still have the original skins, cow on the 12", pig on the 10", ( taught skins that you can get many notes from) early '70's Rodger's fiberglass shells with tuck-up-in legs, and have been played by hundreds of drummers (and not so much too of course) over the years, the skins have soaked up so much blood/sweat/tears/oils over the years they are almost translucent. I am blabbering, sorry man, guess I should write a story about my drums instead eh ;) Keep up the great channel, I have learned a lot from you and send wishes of good cheer and health to you and all of yours, were I younger man I'd be haunting you to go play in your drum room for a couple of years :P

How does the bass sound change when using different mallets? I am wondering if a softer one would mute the high notes enough to hear the bass riffs? What is the sustain on the bass compared to the high note? I'm sorry but I don't have the proper words to say what I am asking, as well as being a fool for not watching the whole vid and having fun today, gratis amigo.

Yes, a softer mallet would bring out more of the low, while at the same time, deemphasizing the attack and higher harmonics. Depending on what the music calls for, the player will choose from a range of mallets.

Captain Beefheart loved his bass Marimba. Played it a lot on quite a few Magic Band recordings.

listening on my laptop to this (phone) recording, i hear mostly overtones. the fundamentals come out best when the yarn mallets are used. the impression i get is that the instrument needs a _very_ specialized acoustic environment to be heard at its best by untrained ears - more so than by you guys who know it well.

So why don't they make wood tongue drums with the tongues arranged in the layout of a keyboard/piano/marimba. More people would play them. I (and I assume many people) don't have the patience and map out the notes in any tongue drums and memorized them. Same as Kalimba, the only one I would buy would be the chromatic ones with a layout of a keyboard/piano.
