Get a referral to a neurologist. I had carpal tunnel syndrome that was masquerading as neck / upper arm pain. Did a lot of tests thinking I had a neck injury or a radial nerve problem and eventually went to a neurologist who tested the latency of nerve signals from my spine to my finger. He hooked up electrodes all along my arm and sent electric shocks up from my finger and measured the latency. He diagnosed CTS and the subsequent release surgery resolved all of my pain, tingling, and soreness. I don't have any problems playing my bass today. Anyhow, that test ought to diagnose CTS pretty definitively.
