Hey amazing channel..I mean you dont produce any where near the same style of music as I do ..but wen it comes down to mixing and some of the more indepth topics you pick up on being a producer and sound engineer I just cant get enough of your experience. I could litrally binge watch you all day long....its really refreshing to find a channel where the content creator actually really does no what he is talking about. .I can tell you have had many years in the production scence...I've subbed and you will 100 percent be seing more from me in the comment section....HATS OFF TO YOU SIR!!

I like to compress bass guitars using sidechained signal which has a low cut around 150-300Hz. I do it on Auratones so I can hear the midrange and high bass of the bass guitar clearly on each note so the percieved loudness of the bass on small speakers is the same on every note. Then I put a multiband compressor and use only low band below 100-200Hz (depending on a bass etc.) to control the dynamics of the real low bass frequencies, and I do it on bigger Eve speakers with a sub so I can hear it clearly and I adjust this band in the whole mix. That way every note is sitting perfectly and many times I don't need to do much automation on it. It just sits well most of the time.

This is so informative and nice! I really notice this in a lot of mixes...sometimes you feel like the kick is so filtered that it feels like it has its own space the the bass starts.....while in a very nice mixes they both work together and make each other stronger than each individual element!

Awesome response, especially the bass frequencies you mentioned. This is a fact in bass, some frequencies (notes) are naturally louder while others are way quiet. Matchmaking your velocity and volume is indeed important. 🔥

I only partly agree with what you say about small home studios. In my opinion you can still get the lowend right even with those mentioned issues, when you listen to music a lot in this setting. If you know how well produced music sounds like on your system, it's not that hard to get the lowend right! It's about using references and understanding your room and speakers.
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 29 күн бұрын
How can you mix what you can't hear? If you have a dip or a null, you're not gonna hear it on your references either, so you're just guessing. If your monitoring system doesn't reproduce low enough, you're just guessing. If your room has flutter echoes in the mid range, you're just gonna guess.

I have not used Amplitube but I have used Plugin Alliance's Ampeg Amp sim, specifically the B15N and I found good results tracking through it. It really evened out the signal and was easy to work with mixing everything else. At least that was my experience with it.

Great video, especially the point about letting the kick and bass slightly overlap frequency-wise. I used to rely on bass to give my mixes punch and body. However, between watching your videos and using some analysers, I didn't realise how much my bass was eating my mix. My mix punch problem was actually in the midrange. Everything is much better now. The low bands on Oeksound Soothe 2 can be good for reigning in the low end on bass.

Yes, one thing you touched on, move the speakers away from the wall for better monitoring! Seriously, figure out a way to do that, it’s a huge deal if you’re in a home studio. Especially if there are any rear ports on your monitors.
@mixbustv
@mixbustv Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately this is one of those internet myths. There are many variables to keep in mind, one if the monitors are front or rear ported, and most important, moving the speakers away from the wall is great if you have an actual studio, design, acoustic etc.. but all it does, well the main thing, is it simply MOVES the null you are going to have. Now, here's the thing: if you move them very close to the wall, the null is gonna go DOWN in frequency. So in some cases, actually many, you can move that null close to 20Hz which is gonna be, as you can imagine, much better than having it at 90Hz or around there. It's different when you DO have treatment, especially in your corners but even more your back wall (as in behind you) because if you do have a null at 90 or 110Hz, it's much easier to treat than a null at let's say 40Hz. The lowest the null is, the more stuff you need to get rid of it, but if you're at home and you can't even treat a higher null, you're better off moving it as low as you can.

Great video: I would just add that with multiband compression: it is more transparent to use it in linear phase mode, if available- especially with bass. In fact, I would argue a linear phase MB compressor is preferable in most cases. Regarding bass sidechain compression- I used to use MB compression to compress the low bass only, triggered by the kick- leaving the upper bass in tact. I still use this in some cases but honestly find that broadband can be as, if not more transparent in many cases. Especially in cases where the bass is stacked with multiple tracks and synths - like in electronic productions- I want the listener to perceive all of that as the “bass”, so if I just duck the subs it can have the effect of separating the bass into its components. I think the sidechain approach is kind of overrated- but if I use it, its with a very fast digital compressor with extensive attack and release control- ducking 1-2db at a time, in a broadband configuration. Tiger by AA seems well suited to this.

Back when I had a really bad listening environment I'd overcome the wonkiness of my room and speakers by constantly double checking everything on my really flat headphones. I would never mix souly on them though, because of headphones not being stereo (they are binaural which is different), but I would check things like levels and eq balance on them as they were super flat for headphones and went all the way down to 5Hz, so were awesome for monitoring the low end. It's such a time looser having to do this though as you can spend like twice as long to do the same thing.

@@mixbustv Not at 3db or 6db +/- 😅 it's something like 20db+/- at 5Hz. They don't make them anymore, but the old Dennon AH-D line (fostex made the same drivers in the USA back when they were avalible). In useable terms they are +/-3db at 20hz roughly and about +/-6db at 10. There's tons of 3rd party test data on them. Although they arn't as flat in the high end, they were by far some of the flattest headphones around, and some of the lowest reaching (and still are to this day, even though they stopped making them about 10 years ago). I litterally have them on my head playing back a 10hz sine as I type this. I can hear it flapping away fine. It sounds like dogshit, but then a 10hz wave always does. But it's moving air at that freqency no problem. It trails off in volume getting down to 5hz sure, but if you crank the volume, it's still producing a 5hz wave. Again, does it sound good? no xD, is it useful? Not really lol. But they DO go that low.

To bedroom producers who can't afford to do control their room, something that's also worth doing is cranking that shit up and walking out of your room. Some frequencies are often amplified beyond your listening position due to low frequencies being longer wavelengths. A room my buddy used to have had fairly weak base unless you walked just outside of his door where it would practically make your teeth rattle.
@mixbustv

Yeah because you (him) have nulls everywhere. Also you walk away you're not hearing highs and mids, that's why you feel there's more bass.

Hey David- When mixing songs with both 808s and kicks- I’ve often noticed that certain notes of the 808 pattern are out of phase with the kick, but only certain notes. So, I end up having to split the 808 melody into 2 separate tracks, one track with the polarity flipped, the other not. And this is both before and after processing… Why is this?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv Жыл бұрын
Because some 808's have light modulation on them. If you do have this problem you have to manually adjust one or the other note by note/hit by hit.

I have that exact issue with bass in my small room. I have tons of headphone assisting software but none of it has helped. Can you do a video on a headphone/software setup with 'settings' (AA-Sienna, Waves NX, Sonarworks, Good hErtz can opener) that actually works for mixing?

I use sonarworks to analyse my room, but I don't use the software to correct it. It just sounds to phasy and smeared. But it lets me know the exact frequencies where I have problems. I dip out the main 2 nodes with an EQ on my listen bus but leave the rest of the EQ flat. Just like you used to tune your room traditionally after it has been properly treated. It keeps the transients sharp and doesn't mess with the phase like correction software does. You still have to treat your room though, this is not an alternative to but an add on to treatment.

I know of a mastering engineer who had to move out of the studio he was used to working in and use headphones instead. He was able to use Can Opener to approximate the feel of his old room sufficiently to keep working, but this is sort of a inverse case from what you're attempting. He was approximating a specific space he already knew very well rather than creating a new virtual space that would have been unfamiliar.
