Bass Reeves - This is a review of the Paramount+ series Lawmen: Bass Reeves. It looks at the real man, and what in the series is Fact or Fiction. Was he the greatest Lawman in the American past? Was he the real life inspiration for the Lone Ranger? In his career as a Deputy US Marshal, he spent most of his time based out of Fort Smith, Arkansas. He arrested over 3,000 wanted felons during his 32 year career. I show some trailers from the TV series, and some videos I shot on the scene. I also look at Judge Parker's court and the infamous gallows in Ft. Smith.

The series does depict, with reasonably accuracy, several events in Reeves' life. The story of the two fighting brothers matches most other sources. It misses the mark in some events, while not even mentioning one of the most famous. He once shot an escaping murderer from over 500 yards away, proving he was a crack shot.

Treaty law prohibited Tribal police from arresting non-Indians in the Indian Territory. This led to an influx of disreputable people into IT. Packs of outlaws roamed freely. This is why the US Marshals went there to arrest criminals.
-
US ATTY Gen estimates in 1888 - of 20,000 whites in IT, only 5,000 are law abiding. Of every 11 people convicted in Parker's court, 7 were white, 3 black, and 1 was Indian.
-
According to the US Marshal's office, between 1875 and 1907, 88 US Deputy Marshals were killed in the line of duty in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). For much of that period the Marshals for this district were based out of Ft. Smith, Arkansas.
