Peter said he was aiming for a gregorian chant feel, which I think he achieved very well without overdoing it. Especially with the harmonies. Gives the song an almost ethereal atmosphere.

Tim goes back and forth between square and triangle frequencies , never knew it could be done vocally. The greatest orchestrators aka Mahler . Your analysis is spot on .

Great analysis yet again! I've known of Peter and Tim's version for years and loved it. However, Geoff's version legitimately made me tear up the first time I heard it, so I've got to give him the edge for emotional impact. Also, I have to give him kudos for an original take on a song that he had to know was going to be compared to Peter and Tim's wonderful cover. Really, we're all winners (especially those die-hard LOTR/Hobbit fans amongst us) for getting to hear two unique covers of a beautiful song from very talented artists.

Fascinating perhaps, but I did ALL the backs on this one, and Tim just added is INSANELY SICK LEAD! You can find my full version of all the backs from a video many years kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKunral3ma7Jcmw.html (On sick days I record my voice and have some nice A1s Bb1 etc and then Db1/D1 every morning for about 90 min or so ----- so I can make stuff work even tho im T1 ;) Nice to meet you man!!!!

at the end IF you watch end the last 5 seconds the camera shakes to the point of about to fall off its stand. Home Free's Do You Hear What I Hear one of their earlier works Tim goes Pit Viper 5 times in the piece !

"Do You Hear What I Hear?" was arranged by their beatboxer Adam Rupp. He loves to run everyone through their paces. DYHWIH is famous for its "five octaves in five seconds" part for Tim. Another song where Tim goes ridiculously low (and one you'll see in a lot of videos showing how his voice creates chaos at concerts) is "Honey I'm Good" arranged by... you guessed it, Adam Rupp.

@@robertboling9057 perhaps technically he is better. But Avi’s tone is much richer. Like velvet where as Tim is flannel. Both are warm and i love them, but the tone is different. Like said above, Avi is buttery.

My favorite version is this one with Peter and Tim. They work well together with the mountain deep voice of Tim vs the misty ness of the lighter voice of Peter. Kinda of a cool little thing

I love medieval music and Gregorian chant and now I know why - Dissonance! I have always wonder why I like minor key songs ( or they sound like they are in a minor key), especially old British folk songs. You are helping me understand it. Thank you. Peter's version of this song is what I expect it to sound like due to JRRT's background and the world he created. I have never heard the other one. I will have to check it out.

Over 20 years ago I was a supernumerary for the Minnesota Opera. I love music of every type (even more so now at 53). What I love about these two versions is the contrast. I agree that there were different goals and like Geoff's version but, for me, the simplicity that Peter and Tim bring to the piece makes it more relatable. That is also how I see Home Free. They tend to focus on the song rather than the singer and it makes for a glass of warm milk being drunk in the evening. Some artists focus more on the singers than the song with can bring some amazing moments but, for me, just isn't as smooth (more like a shot of whisky...no E, low or otherwise ). In my humble opinion, VoicePlay is moving towards what Home Free has mastered in their sound and are more like a glass of warm milk with a shot of whisky thrown in for good measure. I just had to patreon up as I'm a fan of a good Operatic bass and bass in general and have really been enjoying your breakdowns. Love it!

From 12:01 to 12:38, Peter's high vocals are very haunting, which is very much in keeping with the feel of the movie. I really appreciate the arrangement and videography were very closely kept to the original feel of the movie, which, I think, should have been actually used in the movie, except for the fact this video wasn't made until way after the movie came out. Tim's last growl note on this song was totally EPIC because he is all you hear. Ring of Fire had so many other voices mixing in that you don't get a clean sound from Tim's growl note. Anyway, thank you for your assessment on this one and keep up the great work.

I believe the comparison you were looking for was Geoff was going for the action side of misty mountain and Peter was tuning more into the environmental aspect

To me, Peter and Tim's version evokes the original LOTR movies, even though the song is from the Hobbit. It definitely gives me vibes of Gimli and Legolas listening to the elves sing their lament for Gandalf after his fall in Moria, and the whole thing seems kind of either introspective or retrospective, I can't decide which.. Geoff's version, no question, embodies Thorin Oakenshield and the crew. It reminds me of Thorin and Gandalf explaining the situation to Bilbo, so it seems more anticipatory to me. I agree that trying to compare the two interpretations is an apples and oranges thing. If pressed, my taste leans toward this one just because of the plenitude of layers. I'm a sucker for stacked vocals.

For me Tim Foust will always be the best. Of course I'm a proud "home fry". Tim's voice is what first drew me to Home Free. I have always loved to hear good bass singers in a group.

Great reaction. Thanks for all the music theory. I learn so much & it's amazing. Never occurred to me that the 'sounds' we hear are culturally different. Loved this version. My favourite (one of my favourites) is Do you hear what I hear, arranged by Adam Rupp. It's got everything & although I don't know anything about music theory it seems to be a most complicated arrangement...really testing the guys & sounds sublime to the listener

The two parts were recorded seperately. Peter was somewhere on the west coast and Tim in the Midwest. Must have been fun to put together.

Peter's natural baritenor range, where he can adopt traits of both ranges at-will is amazing. Then, add in the layering he used and it's next level. I like both this and Geoff's versions for different reasons; one is not better than the other.

The wait is finally over, and the two hottest debates are: 1. Do you prefer Geoff's version or Peter and Tim's version? 2. Do you like Tim's growl more in Misty Mountains or Ring of Fire? I look forward to seeing what you guys think, and my full thoughts on the matter are revealed towards the end of the video!

I think you are right in that in Ring, Tim's growl is a more "solid" growl and here it is more breathy but knowing Tim's voice and music as well as I do, it is definitely done deliberately. As you said, to keep in the style of Misty, he keeps that "breathy"/airy sound when he goes to that lower range. As to which I like better? I like them both as they both fit the aesthetic of the song he is singing.

I have to say, while Geoff's version is sooo impressive in its own right, I now lean towards this one taking the cake. Peter is just such a tasteful arranger. Super analysis video my now favourite reactor! When other reactors I watch announce that this is something they've seen before, I usually click off. Not so with you, because I learn something new every time. Keep up the good work 👏👏👏👏❤ Edit: Apparently Peter didn't arrange this? But it's beautiful all the same

I prefer Peter's and Tim's version of Misty Mountains. It reminds me more of the movie "The Hobbiit." I like the growl note from "Ring of Fire" more. Not as breathy. Much more penerative.

IMO, Peter, in addition to that gorgeous tenor voice, is an absolute genius at arrangement and layering. I think I saw somewhere that this one took over 120 layers to put together.

I've watched your Reaction Videos before and until this Reaction I didn't feel like Subscribing because your Opinions were often too different than mine! I thought that your Criticism was a bit strong on some Home Free Songs, so I didn't watch other Group's Videos! BTW, absolutely nothing wrong with that, I'm just being truthful as you were in this Video! I truly liked pretty much everything that you said on this version and Geoff's Version! Loved them both and for different reasons! These 2 guys and Avi IMO are the BEST BASSISTS around! Yet they all have totally different but awesome Sounds to their Bass! Sometimes I think Geoff does his Bass Drops unnecessarily but in his Version it was excellent! I am now Subscribed! Thanks for the truthfulness here!

I love Geoff's voice...BUT I have to say Peter and Tim on this one. I like the variation of the tones where as Geoff remains in the low end most of the way.

To be honest!!! It's all about the song choice. This song is way different than ring of fire. Always the song choice!!! Don't want to sound the same all the time. That's what I love about tim. He is so versatile in his base.Just check out home free and see what he does. He can change at a drop of the hat. We all love that BASS!!! This is why he is the KING of the bass.

Love hearing your science in voice. It is new to me. My musical experience is flute and piano. With a 60 year break from playing music to pursue medicine as a passion. Finished med school in 72. Have worked really hard for a long time. Now semi retired and picking music up again. Love your speaking voice. Enjoy opera too

The lowest I have heard Tim go is in Fishin' In the Dark/Boondocks mash up. It has been identified as B zero. Besides that, it is a fun song. You should enjoy yourself.

Well-reviewed! I agree where both artists have different goals it doesn't make one better than the other. Tim/Peters was going more for the historical feel (voices from the grave) where Geoffs version is (to me) the hammers in cadence where nothing will stop a dwarf from reaching their goal. I like hearing your take on these pieces because you know the bass well enough not to be overwhelmed by it, and can focus on the arrangement, the higher notes, and even trying to predict how a song is going to go (Peter changed it on you and surprised you which was cool). again extremely well done. The only critic I have, (you know people have to critic something) I don't know what is making that rattling noise as you record but hearing that while you are explaining something or listening to a video at least to me is kinda grating, small thing I know but I like the video well enough to let you know and want you to improve quality.

I love both, but if I'm being honest, I love Geoff's. I think it really speaks of the dwarves and their quest. Tim's growl was my favorite however! Everyone's choice is their own. I don't think one is better than the other, but Geoff's had more of the Hobbit feel. Peter and Tim's was more LOTR esque, and I feel it didnt 100% fit the "on our way to slay the dragon" of the Hobbit. But it is BEAUTIFUL and Peter's layering is absolutely gorgeous! Again, I love both! I just had more of a reaction and immediate love to Geoff's.

Went and checked out your channel.. and was curious if you did any piece on Tim's ability to vary his vocal range and his ability to hit a very nice high head voice in falsetto. Check out his solo piece of a little bit longer/stay. One thing I liked about it was that you can tell he was having fun doing it.. showing his vocal range.

I agree with you about the different goals. Both wonderfully achieved. But I can't help but feel like with Peter and Tim I'm watching an amazing movie, but with Geoff I'm a part of that movie. Weird, I know! As listed in credits, Peter's arr was by Tom Anderson. I guess not the MySpace guy, but no idea. Geoff shows arranged, produced, filmed, performed, and edited by him. Peter claims to be purely acapella, and I believe him. He's a master at stacking hundreds of recordings to create unbelievable harmonies. But sometimes he uses people from his academy for that, so I can't tell for sure if it was just him and Tim. Geoff, on the other hand, has fewer stacked voices, and uses instruments. So, I like both versions, but ... I'm bias to Geoff, I guess 🥰🔥 I love your reactions! 😍

@Alex Walker It was all Peter. He actually commented in someone's reaction stating it was about 120 layers of vocals and that everything that wasn't Tim's Bass was him. So, yeah, 119 Layers of Peter and 1 Layer of Tim.

Love the arrangement by Peter and Tim. The harmony of the two voices is perfect. Geoff has a very nice deep voice, but when Tim hits his low notes I get goosebumps. This version captures the mood better than Geoff's in my opinion. A very nice response from you again.

Hi Peter, I just discovered your page so I am going back listening to your reviews which I truly enjoy. I’m just curious, have you ever heard Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms? I think it is one of the most incredible pieces of music I’ve ever heard and had the pleasure of performing with the NYS All-State choir in high school. Yeah, this piece is gorgeous. Peter is not only totally skilled vocally, just like Tim, but he's absolutely the master of layering as far as I'm concerned. Just butter. Butter everywhere. Also, I absolutely love Whitacre. Embrace the dissonance, it's excellent.

I heard a video on KZfaq titled FBT Little Quartet Sings Christmas Carol of Love. The boys mouth the words which are sung by JD Sumner and the Stamps. JD Sumner Was listed in the Guinness book of world records as having the lowest bass voice, So I thought you might enjoy listening to this. It is also humorous watching the 4 boys pretending to sing that song.

Have you ever watched Home Free’s Sing-Off appearances? I think it was Ben Folds who called Tim “Tim, the Singing Refrigerator” before he brought the house down in Ring Of Fire. 😂. Your comments about bass attitude vs. bari-tenor attitude put me in mind of that.

Starts off like a Gregorian Chant. Love that! As you said it invokes feeling of Misty mountains. It transports you into that Hobbit movie.

I like Geoff, and I like most of his music, including 16 Tons, Blackbird, The Headless Horseman etc....however, I think sometimes he, and VoicePlay, drop the bass just because they can, instead of fitting it in with the style of music.....gratuitous is a good word as the comment below stated.

I won't speak to VoicePlay's stuff, but at least for the stuff on Geoff's channel, I'm always a little surprised at criticism of him dropping the bass notes when he almost always includes "Low Bass Singer Cover" in the title. Totally get that not being everyone's cup of tea, but the warning's on the tin, haha. He's clearly found a style and an internet niche that's working for him.

@@maeco7 oh, I appreciate the low bass singing and I get what you are saying...however it just appears to me that sometimes he drops the REALLY low bombs in places that seem more of a gimmick that something that works to better the song...I don't know...there is no denying his talent and I love a lot of his stuff.

@@maeco7 Just because it gives out warnings doesn't make it make sense to do it whenever! IMO it should fit the Song or the mood at the time and sometimes Geoff's just doesn't work for me! That's why I prefer Tim as my #1 overall Bass and Avi for consistency! Geoff's still my #2 though!

I agree that Tim seems to always look like it's so easy, no big deal, just open your mouth and song comes out. And on the other hand you have Peter very focused. Which I find it very difficult to "watch" Peter sing because of what he does with his jaw and mouth. Don't get me wrong, he is a VERY talented singer but more , he's a master at arranging, layering and editing. If you watch the screen on Tim's last growl note it shakes with his voice. FREAKY!! I love it.

I opted out on commenting on the annoying nodding and jaw shortcuts, since my critique was already too negative for how much I enjoyed it... Being a trained singer can be such a curse at times, especially when you are a high soprano in a choir and therefore always, always admonished to hold back, keep a forward direction when ascending and descending, and not slide up to notes, ever! 😉

I was listening to a Home Free cover of Flowers on the Wall. I think you would get a particular chuckle out of the bass line in this song. The original done by the Stantler Brothers back in the late 60's. The boys dust this oldie but goodie and give it a modern twist.

the way I interpret what you mean about the march when sang by jeff is the comparison of telling the story i.e. sitting around the table at bilbo's (this version) vs. using the story as motivation i.e. preparing to storm the lonely mountain

Starting out, that was all Peter Hollens. He continually layers his voice to get the impression that many people are singing (or in this case humming). He has a pretty large register for both high and low but his is a tenor voice.

Great reaction, I love this song and Tim's voice just as I love Geoff's Sixteen Tons (a song from my youth). I would like to see them sing the whole poem from the Hobbit (26 verses I think) that would be something to behold. Are you open to something different? Over the last 2 years I have discovered Symphonic Metal and a Band call Nightwish. Their singer is a soprano with over 3 octove's range and perfect pitch. She is trained in Rock, Classical, Theatre and Opera, can switch between them at will and can sing anything from Death growls to Opera. Their music is 95% written by their Keyboardist Tuomas who sends his symphonic scores to Pip Williams at the London College of Music who arranges it and it is then recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and London Metro Voices Choir. If you feel intrigued I would suggest having a look at Ghost Love Score from the 2013 Wacken Metal Festival.

By far the best version done. Kudos to your low growl, btw. Lots have done this song, but this is my preferred version. Perhaps I am a Tim "fangirl". I love Geoff. I just prefer some of Tim's...idk. Tim's lows seem very naturally placed. Sometimes Geoff makes a place for his loss, however nicely he executes them. I just think that sometimes, lows, low-lows aren't the necessity in every song a basso profundo sings.

I think Tim's growl here was a stylistic choice. Everything was kept light, airy and ethereal. Plus there's the whole dragon breath thing here story-wise, being that in order to claim said long-forgotten gold, facing the dragon is inevitable. In terms of this one vs Geoff's, I tend to prefer this one overall because I'm a choral/classical singer and this strikes my vibe better. That being said, Geoff is an AMAZING bass and I still really enjoy his version. I think the best way I can separate them is mysticism and legend (Peter/Tim) vs in the moment call-to-arms (Geoff). It's not apples to oranges, but it's kind of like nectarines vs peaches: same thing overall, but they hit your palette very different texturally. It's not a bass cover, but have you heard Peter's version of "Aragorn's Coronation"? It's pretty new. He gets to rock his bari range throughout it and, as is usual for Peter's work, it's gorgeous.

I wasn’t comparing Tim’s growl in Misty Mountains to Ring of Fire. The pieces are so different, that I think even the same notes would sound different. Both are appropriate for the piece they finish. And by the way, I am brushing off an awful lot of ancient music theory learning to keep up with your reviews. Does my brain (as well as appreciation of the music) good.

I would say that Peter's version was more theatrical where Geoghs version what I would consider character based. Both versions were excellently coriographed in my opinion.

My personal preference is undoubtedly Peter and Tim's version. Geoff is undeniably talented, but I feel that he puts bass drops in places that are just there for shock value. It makes those amazing notes less special when he hits them all the time. I prefer the Sing Off growl in Ring of Fire. Keep up the great breakdowns!
