Opening bassoon solo in The Rite of Spring played on Contraforte. This includes a high D which needed an especially thick reed to play.

Wonderful. It's even got more of the desperate straining sound that Stravinsky wanted, and that modern bassoon technique has done away with.

If only I were fifty grand richer . . . I'm renting the bassoon that I have now. Can't even hit High D. Then I see this, and I'm like Shit . . .

How is he playing it in the original octave if Stravinsky's solo is at the top of the bassoon's range but the contraforte is an octave lower than the bassoon?

@@dbadagna Contraforte is a more modern contrabassoon I suppose. Contraforte has a much wider range than the contrabassoon as it was built for. It has 2 octave keys on the bocal alone so it makes sense it can go so high.

imagine how more baffled saint-saens will be when he looked down the pit and sees it's a contrabassoon-like instrument playing that high of a note. during a show of the rite he said "well if that's a bassoon, then i'm a baboon!" i guess he's a contrababoon now
