Their famous Windmills were the key, rather than grinding wheat into flour or draining polders for land reclamation the windmills were adapted with up to 4 saw blades, this enabled an entire tree trunk to be sawn lengthwise for planking, it was really the first instance of Standardization & mass production which enabled their shipyards to concentrate on a standardize superior ship design & quadruple ship production.

The Dutch didn't build "thousands" of ship like this one. It takes a huge number of trees in the construction of a ship of this size, not to mention a large crew to man it. Neither resource was in great abundance, not for a fleet even a fraction of that size.

@@jamesaron1967 no, no no, just no you are just flat out wrong, the Dutch Fluyt was the workhorse of the Merchant Marine & was built in the thousands, large cargo hold, small crew, which gave the Dutch a competitive trade advantage in lower running costs, they also built ships for most other European nations in the hundreds, when you are the preeminent trading nation it is a small impost to import the wood needed for ship construction & you hire mercenaries for your Army & Navy.

@@harryeisermann2784 You don't need much modern navigation systems to travel the world. Just the correct updated sea charts, sextant and nautical almanac can help you with navigation without using GPS. Also a compass with a bearing device can be useful for coastal navigation. It doesn't need to travel the whole world, but I mean it would be nice if she just at least make some small trips along the coast.

The tops of the main masts broke off during a storm. They stored the other woodwork in a warehouse, to preserve them. The mainmast has also been replaced.

Jiskpirate will the ship get completely new topmasts? Is it able to set Sail on the oceans?

@Remsey yeah but this ship is made to set sail. Its its destiny to sail over the ocean and visit other harbours. And it would be an epic view on the Horizon to see her coming and sailing by. Thats an east indiaman or?

@@noname-yo6yn Yes, the Batavia is a 17th century East Indiaman (in Dutch we called it ''Oost-Indiëvaarder'' or also called ''Spiegelretourschip'').

@@noname-yo6yn The bad news is that she is docked for a long time. She only sailed more than a decade ago to Australia and 2 times for movies. The first movie (''Scheepsjongens van Bontekoe'') about 11 or more years ago and the second movie (''Michiel de Ruyter'' or also called in some other countries ''Admiral'') 3 or 4 years ago. Since than she is docked. Her masts were also damaged during a heavy storm and some sails were burned. It is for now and soon not ready to set sail aigan. But I hope that once, the masts will be repaired and new sails are being purchased. So that she will be ready to sail aigan and will sail aigan.

Do you think the kingdom / sultanate in Indonesia does not have ships like that? Try looking for "Jung jawa", those are ships from the Majapahit kingdom and the demak sultanate, even the size of the ship is much bigger than the ships owned by Portuguese traders, before the Dutch arrived, the Portuguese were already first in the Indonesian archipelago and the Demak kingdom with its warships attacked Portuguese ships in the Malacca Strait.

This ship (Batavia) never made it to the Dutch East Indies (modern day Indonesia) so I doubt any Indonesian could have reacted to it.

She's not "that" large though, only 57 meters in length, and 9 meters wide. And, currently, half her masts are taken down due to strorm damage (from a storm in 2012).

No, they've been off since the main mast broke. (They were digitally added back on for the movie though.) Speaking of the movie, I personally (and several others at the shipyard) are a bit disappoibted in regards to the historical accuracy. But then again, we can't have everything.

Jari Bonthuis OK I see then. Thanks for the info. I was disappointed in the movie as well. I was especially upset seeing digital 3D cad models of Dutch fluyts in the battle line. An unforgivable mistake. All they would've had to do is look at a few paintings of the battles to get the ships correct. The other parts of the mast are inside the bataviawerf, they only put it on wen the ship is going to sail.

I'll explain why, as I work at the shipyard myself (for the time being); The masts were taken down after the main mast broke in a storm in 2012, both the foremast and mainmast are currently being maintained in the Mast-manufacturing area of the shipyard, and will not be re-installed for now, as the shipyard fears another storm might be coming on soon-ish. She ís the only 100% replica of a Dutch VOC (Verenidge Oost-Indische Compagnie = Dutch East India company) Spiegel-Retourschip. She does nót have engines, and is to be manned by at léast 100 sailors if she were to set sail again (where as originally she'd have about 200 sailors and 140 soldiers, on her way to the colonies.). However, as the shipyard (and therefore the maintainence of the ship) are no longer being funded by the state. And therefore, is currently coping with a 'lack' of funds to complete the other replica of "De 7 Provinciën" (Whose framework can be partially seen in the background here.) (This indirectly is another reason why we cannot put the masts back in place just yet. Any new repairs would be quite expensive, and would take months). We are currently working on a smaller vessel called a "Waterschip", which is nothing much compared to the Batavia or 7 Provinciën really, but at least it's being funded. (In case you wonder what it'd cost to build a ship like the Batavia, or what it'd cost to re-start the project of De 7 Proviniën (which is currently cancalled entirely): The continuation of the built of De 7 Provinciën, would cost an estimated 15, to 20 million euros.)
