Hello ! Thanks for sharing ! How is the stove doing, five years later ?

Couple of questions: -What size of ceramic blanket did you use? Seems like a double layer of 1 cm? Would a single layer of 4 cm be better or just overkill? How did you attach it, so that it doesn't just fall off the riser? Why did you add insulation on the top of the bell? -What is the size of the bench? I assume the relevant parameter here is the inner surface area? Could I just expand the bench to any size I want or would this be detrimental to the working of the RMH? -What is the minimal/ideal height of the chimney? -Did you make the door yourself or buy it somewhere? What are the dimensions? -I can see the P-channel inlet in the last part of the video, but where is the primary air inlet?

It looks like none of the two top brick rows attach to the sides with mortar. The joints are filled only with ceramic blanket (see e.g. at 3:28). Also, the joints of the bench top is filled only with blanket at least in case of the first row (3:16). Can such mortar-less joints allow smoke or carbon monoxide to escape from the barrel/bench into the room? Thanks for sharing.

Lately I've been fascinated by the BBR, I'm looking at building my own since I'm renovating my house. Would you recall where you bought the door (or more likely, do you have any plans?) Thanks in andvance! :)

Congratulations! Brilliant work on the video. Love the accessible angles from all around. One of the best RMHs videos on KZfaq. I appreciate your dedication to education. So, you are using the stratification concept to heat your bench, eh?

Hi, I built my whole house thanks to videos like these by other youtubers so this is my way of giving back to the community. I have some "normal" footage that i will make another video of soon which will make it a little easier to see how it is built. Yeah, originally I wasnt aware that an open bench like this would work well but Peter designed it this way and we are very happy with it. thanks for your comment!

What exactly is the idea behind a double wall top bell with the insulation in between layers? Doesn't that reduce the heat being emitted to the room? Or is the whole point to get more heat in the bench itself which is lower in the room and then gives a better heat distribution? Great video btw :)

my thought too, and the steel bar on top will degrade over time and top bricks will collapse
@wiredforstereo

Very hot in the top, the blanket allows for expansion and contraction without cracking. Only the exit exhaust temp matters and that is controlled by the internal surface area.
@bmull81
@bmull81 Жыл бұрын
@@wiredforstereo - yes, the internal surface area controls the dissipation of heat into the bell, with the right proportions (see batchrocket.eu/en/building) the appropriate amount of heat is extracted before the exhaust exits the system - thus the greatest possible energy from the burn is either radiated, or stored and then radiated after a delay. So clever!

Hi Angel, thanks for your comment. The exhaust gases from the fire go into the bench and heat it up. It turns into a nice butt warmer ;)

Hi, What size of bricks do you use. I see you have a double skin somewhere above the heat riser. Are both skins made of firebricks? Have you experienced any cracks in the mortar somewhere? I am working on this build permies.com/t/93424/Needing-Feedback-design-sidewind-batchbox and experiencing cracks mostly in the area above the heat riser about 1hr after I have started the fire. So I was thinking about having a double skin in that area. But before I pull out the bricks I would like to have your feedback as your build is much older that mine. Thanks!
@Mandalaman
@Mandalaman 5 жыл бұрын
Hi you have all the tecnical stuff in the sketchup file which you can find in the description and ask Peter all the questions you want on the donkey forum. I cant help you with that side im afraid. yes its double skiined with firebrick from the height of the top of the riser but the rest of the bricks are just normal fired clay bricks. I have some very small cracks in a couple of places but Im talking 1mm.

@KirkDickinson
@KirkDickinson 6 жыл бұрын
I saw that triangle when it was being built, but didn't understand. Most Rocket mass heaters that I have seen have the exhaust at the end of the bench. Do you have a pipe inside the bench that feeds back to the other side?
@Mandalaman
@Mandalaman 6 жыл бұрын
the bench is just open. no pipe and it works really well. the exit for the chimney is in the lowest part of the heater so the colders gases run through there. this is slightly different to the common rmh.
@KirkDickinson
@KirkDickinson 6 жыл бұрын
It looks like the exhaust would just go down then up the flue on the right. What makes the heat travel over to the bench part?
@Mandalaman
@Mandalaman 6 жыл бұрын
as far as I understand as the hot less dense air floats to the top of the bell, the cooler denser air sinks down towards the bottom of the bell and into the bench and then further down to the level of the exhaust where it exits the bell. Its called thermal stratification. an easy way to picture how this works is, if imagine the whole batch rocket upside down and were to fill it with water it would fill from bottom to top and then overflow out the chimney. that is similar to how the heat is distributed in the bench. i found a good description in this thread: firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/threads/rocket-mass-heater-build-time-for-a-rocket-stove-subform.22268/

the flue goes out the little triangle on the right hand side. you can see it here 1:07 . thanks for your comment!
@CarbonConscious
@CarbonConscious 6 жыл бұрын
Ok I see the triangle but how does it get outside? Or does it just vent into the room?
@Mandalaman
@Mandalaman 6 жыл бұрын
From the triangle there is a normal chimney that goes up and then out of the house to an insulated pipe on the outside. it cant vent into the room. There is always some smoke that comes out of the chimney especially when you are lighting the fire or if your wood is green or wet. Also you would get all of the moisture from the wood. no stove is 100% clean.
@CarbonConscious
@CarbonConscious 6 жыл бұрын
I thought so already, just couldn't see it ;) i know that even the cleanest stoves are still not clean enough to vent into the house, the C02 alone is reason enough to vent outside. I just finished an indoor biochar stove and that burns without any smoke start to finish but there is still soot in the exhaust.

I really like it. How is it working; heating well? I would love this with a cooktop and oven on the side instead of a bench and would love to see a second window above to see that rocket action. I had seen that second window in another video.

Love this type of rocket mass. Looks way better than the traditional J tube. How much do these cost to build? I just subscribed. Keep 'em coming!
@Mandalaman
@Mandalaman 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa, yes, there were a couple of reasons why we chose to build it this way, mainly being able to actually see fire, and being able to just put a batch in instead of having to feed the thing every 40 minutes. That being said it wasnt cheap. It cost around 2000€ in materials. A classical RMH costs basically nothing to build as you just have to buy a few fire bricks and the chimney pipe. Which is the main advantage of that type of heater. thanks for your comment and your sub! another video on the heater coming soon.
