The original Psycho movie from 1960 was shot at Universal studios in LA, where the motel and house are preserved till date for tourists to see.

At Universal Studios they have Norman (an actor) coming out of the Motel with a large knife when your tour bus passes by.

I actually visited twice and that house was huge

I think a possible reason why Langley wanted them to tear it down is because it wouldn’t have generated much revenue as a tourist attraction. The buildings are only facades with hollow shells inside. The actual interior scenes were filmed in sets inside a soundstage and edited/superimposed in those scenes where there were views from the outside and inside (such as Norma standing at the door talking to the Sheriff, etc.). People wouldn’t have paid money to just look at an exterior building with nothing inside it. They’d have to invest in more money to build/rebuild the interiors and make alterations to the buildings to fit all those rooms. It would have cost more than the facades themselves.

I always thought it was strange that they constructed it right next to a public road, rather than somewhere a little more remote. Does anyone know if they used to shut that road down during shooting so that there weren't frequent sound recording issues with all the passing traffic?

' Crazy decision ' it was a ready made tourist attraction. Especially at Halloween. I don't know the area but maybe (& i'm only speculating ) the local authorities were worried it would attract the 'wrong crowd' and this would harm the area and costly to Police. Other wise it would be quite an assest . a jem for Movie buffs & Alfred Hitchcock fans alike.
