@@nancy28352 sorry, I didn't mean to make it sound like a personal attack. It's just that most men felt a lot of pride if they could take care of everything that one's homestead needed so their wives wouldn't have to worry about such things. Plus honestly, most women aren't interested in seeing the particulars of a household repair job. Most women just wanted it done. LOL I am a 66 year old woman who has never been married & whose father wasn't particularly good at fixing things around the house. He didn't seem to have much mechanical talent but he was a very hard worker & normally had three jobs going so that he could afford to pay a repairman for anything that needed doing. (Plus he had 5 kids to feed & clothe.) Since I was very mechanically inclined & interested in everything going on around me. I'd be looking over the repairmans' shoulders paying attention to everything he was doing and everything he was saying. Confident, competent repairmen never seem to mind having an audience even if it was just a little tomboy. 😀 Obviously I wasn't able to learn everything as a child so you tube is the next best thing!! I love it when I find a nice, articulate, confident, , competent repairman like this gentleman! 💖 ☺️

Thankfully, this is a Delta Faucet setup so after watching this video I’m hoping I can find the exact replacement assembly (as shown in your video) at my local hardware store. 👍👍👍👍

If anyone is dealing with a house as old as time, replaces all the parts and finds that the lever won't budge, add more grease to the plug (the big thing at the end of the apparatus). I also poured some CLR down the pipe where the plug goes in. I don't know if that helped, but layering grease on the plug as if I was buttering a tasty slice of toasted rye bread for breakfast definitely worked for me. I used product called super lube, just make sure it says "marine" on the tube, so you know it will work for water applications, at least I think that's what it means. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Two fascinating things I learned here. One was what this part that my bathtub didn't have is called (there was just an opening from a previous owner that took it off and never put it back. lol) and the 2nd one was how that piece that you put inside the hole connects to the parts on the bottom where the water drains out. Which is doesn't!! I never knew it was a simple "float" at the bottom that stopped the water. Ah,I love when something is so simple to fix,after someone shows me how. Thanks!

You made this look incredibly simple. However, I'm finding that the water will drain even if the lever is lifted. I've tried lowering at the level of the bolt below the cotter pin all the way down and raising it up as well. It seems no matter the depth it always drains and never holds water. Is there a secret to getting the plunger part aligned properly to hold water?

I had a kitchen drain like this last weekend. Locate the pipe under the house there should be a clean outs somewhere farther down line try snaking those 1 by 1 until you reach the clog... Or you could try and take a plunger and plunge the tub slowly a bunch of times to push the liquid plumber farther into the line and closer to the clog. Sometimes just plunging it will get it to release. For the kitchen I had I plunged it and then let it sit overnight came back in the AM and it had let go..

Some people have gotten them with a pair of angled or a regular needle nose pliers or a metal coat hanger and bend a hook into one end and try and fish it out. Most likely when it's not attached it's because the barrel or stopper part is stuck within the pipe. If you click the link in the description it will take you to my website and the write up on this and then scroll down to the bottom of the page and there will be instructions on how to remove a stuck linkage or barrel/ stopper.

My bathtub is only about 5 years old and the condo building was newly built 5 years ago. I watched other video saying the recent year model can not be pull out directly from the opening. But I don't see anywhere in the tub can be accessed to it. Any idea? Thanks

I have an old 1970 house with the tub sandwiched in between two closets. The tub would not drain, so I took off the stopper lever plate following your excellent video. When I tried to pull out the barrel, it came all the way to the top but cannot clear the outlet due to some cement type substance that was apparently put in at the time the tub was installed. I suppose I could take a chisel to get this out, but that is not my real question here. BTW, I also noticed the spring was corroded and broken making replacement mandatory of at least the top section. My real question is; Why is the tube still not draining when the barrel has been pulled all the way to the top? Is there still something else causing the drain stoppage? Hopefully I won't have to access the trap as it is totally inaccessible short of blasting the whole tub out, as viewed through a door cut through the sheetrock in the closet on the fixture side. TIA
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet 11 жыл бұрын
Sometimes they do become jammed. Corrosion builds up on it not letting move freely. You can try some PB Blaster let it sit for a bit and then try and remove it with a pair of pliers. If that doesn't work you will have to remove the trap and remove the stopper. If you click the Link in the description and go to the bottom of the page you will see a picture and a written out step by step to walk you throw getting it out. Good Luck.

Hello, Yes replacing your faceplate should fix that problem as there is a spring on the back of the faceplate that holds it in the fully up or down position. So it is either getting weak or has broken altogether.

Could really use your help. The linkage connecting to the float rusted out so I decied to replace the entire stopper assembly from the faceplate to the float. Problem is, when I try to insert the new assembly into the drain, something seems to be keeping it from going down any further. So when I reassemble the entire thing, the lever on the face plate doesn't even budge.

Great video. I have a question. My stopper is stuck inside the tub is there a trick to getting it out? It’s still hooked to the level I removed the two screws and I pull out but the linkage won’t come out with the stopper it appears to be stuck down there and the tub is not draining? Thanks for any help.

I bought the replacement lever because the older one seemed frozen.The problem seems to be at the stopper at the end of the linkage that through gravity sits..When I make sure it is seated at the bottom, the tub still keeps draining out as if there were nothing stopping it. The stopper itself seems to be made of brass. So it isn't the lever that is the main problem. Thoughts?
@oq17
@oq17 5 жыл бұрын
You did an excellent job explaining how to replace this - thank you !! I had one question . You mentioned that the plate had to be reinstalled securely to prevent leaks . However earlier you said that this was the over flow as well . If so , why would a leak matter ? Wouldn’t it just go into the over flow . I might be missing something. Regards
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet

You're welcome. Glad we could help. Yes it is the overflow pipe for the tub but the part/ pipe right behind the tub has a rubber gasket that is used to seal it to the back of the tub. So when the face plate is tightened it pulls the back part of the pipe and the gasket to the tub to seal it. So if water does go into the overflow pipe it will continue down to the drain and not leak down the outside of the tub. amzn.to/2X9yTFt if you click that and look at the second item picture you can get an idea of what I am talking about and hopefully that answers your question. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up/ like. Thanks

My assembly is exactly like yours and the issue is the lever not staying in down position, so it won't drain at normal rate unless someone is pressing on it. Will replacing it solve the problem or is it related to the float? Thanks for the info and video.

Thanks, my switch spins in ways it shouldn't. I think this part is broken. Now that you showed me how it works, I'm going to attempt to take it apart & see if I need a new one or if the linkage thing just came apart.

You're welcome, Glad we could help. Hopefully it will/was be an easy fix by just replacing the face plate. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up/ like if you haven't already. Thanks

@@TheDIYGuyDOTnet Actually it did help me fix it. Once I got the plug out it turned out the hook that attached to the switch popped out of place. I took a set of plyers, pulled the hook open so I could put it back into place & then used the plyers to bend the hook closed again. Works good as new. Thanks a lot. Probably saved some $ on getting a plumber for a very minor repair.

Good video. Mine is locked in place unfortunately. Real slow drain. Been in there with for decades and hard water probably locked it in.

Very informative, but that thingy you pulled out isn't in my bathtub drain. The kohler face plate came off with nothing attached. Also, there's a metal rod in the drain that flips around, but I can't control it. The water sometimes pushes it and the bathtub fills up. I have to jiggle it to make the water drain. And it takes a very long time to drain! Any ideas? Thank you!

Hello, Did the cotter pin break on the back side of the face plate thus leaving the linkage in the overflow? Is there a lever on the face plate? Some are just an overflow with a toe-tip style stopper. Some of the kohler overflows had an external linkage. It's had to give you a good answer without seeing it. If you click the link in the description then scroll to the bottom you could upload a picture and I can give you a better answer. Can you gain access the under side of the tub?

TheDIYGuyDOTnet Thank you for your response! I unscrewed the faceplate, and felt around, discovered that the 'guts' were there, but it is a straight rod -- doesn't have a hook on it that I can latch on to. The lever is missing, anyway. It feels like the weight is all the way on the bottom, thus restricting water flow. I've been sticking my hand into the drain, pushing up the metal rod to increase water flow. After last night's shower, I just let it drain on its own, and it took almost three hours to drain! I emailed my landlord, and he's sending over a plumber. Had it not been for your explanation, I wouldn't have been able to sound coherent when describing the problem to him. Thank you so much for your help!!

Your welcome, glad we could sort of help you. Hopefully they can fix it for you with little trouble but I am guessing they will have to pull the trap apart. Good Luck.

What if the stopper won't come out? Like I took the faceplate off and tried to pull the stopper up and it won't budge one inch.

Would this be something that would make my shower drain slower? I took it out but my snake couldn't get far, and my snakes a lil too thick for the bottom drain :( thinking another possibility is that the weight is slightly too low. Advice?

Ours works just fine just whenever I try to drain the tub. The lever won’t stay down. It keeps going back up and not draining.

What do the drain is stuck? screw for the drain cover? nut on the trap? The lever assembly will not come out because the barrel stopper is stuck inside. Click the link in the description it will take you to my website and at the bottom of the page it will tell/ show you how to remove a barrel that is stuck.
