It’s been 40 years since I walked these streets as a youngster, in my 50’s now and have spent those 40 years in Johannesburg, South Africa. Have to tell you, this is going to be a very special video for a lot of people like me. Oh, no need to stop narrating either, good to hear a familiar accent to go with it. Thank You

I lived in Livingston from 1967 - 1984. My mum would take me to Bathgate for shopping before the Livi centre took shape. I remember the Leyland factory on the way in on the bus. Was there a shop called Gordons? In later years I used to go swimming at Bathgate Baths. A wonderful old Victorian design now sadly gone. Also remember the dept store Greigs. I think Tony Greig the cricketer was linked to it somehow. The town had quite a bit of night life in the mid eighties with two nightclubs or more.

I live a few miles outside Bathgate in a wee toon of Armadale, Bathgate used to be the epicentre of our community, it had great shops, massive outdoor market, bootsales etc. unfortunately as many small towns suffer the same fate, the introduction of Livingston Centre or mall which boasts an abundance of indoor shopping facilities, leisure and restaurants, this was the first blow to Bathgate followed by the introduction of ebay etc, now its just hanging on there, more as a home base for folks to visit other places.

Thanks for the video. It brought back many memories. I was raised in East Whitburn but was frequently in Bathgate. I attended Bathgate Academy 1946 to 1949, then worked in the Bathgate Co-op grocery. Is it still around? Saturday evenings we would go to the dancing in the Norbury or Palais, hoping to get picked at Ladies Choice then we would head out for fish and chips. I live in Florida now but West Lothian is often in my thoughts.

Lovely video thank you so much. Seeing this from Ontario, Canada. As a child long ago I lived in Bathgate for a short but delightful time with my grandparents and went to Bathgate Academy before emigrating to Canada. Loved those little historical notes too. My people came from this part of Scotland. Keep up the good work! I also love the comments from former people of Bathgate, some from all over the world.

This is really interesting . I was hoping I would recognise where Serafini's and Woolworths used to be but sadly didn't. When I visited my grandmother, who lived in Eastfield she used to take me there on the bus over 65 years ago.

The woolworth shop is now Poundland, as you head down George street, across from St davids is the typical 1930s building that was always Woolworths. Serafinis is also on the left but is now Boots. I remember getting a Knickerbocker glory ice cream in there or next door for a bag of chips

I loved walking the small hills not far from my Gran's house on Traprain Cres. in Bathgate. In summer the hills were covered with bluebells. In memory it was a bonny place. Good to know the history of a place known for several innovations. It may be difficult right now in Scotland, and in Bathgate, as it is worldwide, but I have no doubt that innovative spirit which is part of Bathgate's legacy will rise again in the future. It is in the people and in the land itself.

Successive tory governments, brexit, the demoting from being the capital town of west lothian, in favour of livingston, the focus of investment into livingston, to the detriment of the other towns of the district, take their toll. I can recall the time m&s were blocked from opening up given the pressure it’d cause for the (at the time) significant number of well established and relatively thriving local businesses. How far the quality of the environment has fallen, on many levels, it’s astonishing. It is a shame, and not something I take any satisfaction in saying, but it makes the case for a break from westminster, and an electorate who (for reasons best known to themselves), repeatedly vote in governments comprised of individuals devoted only to their personal wealth at the cost of all of the fabric of society, again and again. Scotland can do better, god help england and the english though, as it’s on a trajectory toward only even wider wealth gaps, greater divisiveness, less opportunities…much more in line with the problems and flavour of places like the us. Johnson was the first briton-trump; from the shower from whom his successor will be selected, I don’t see improvement anytime soon.

@@thekiltedcyclist4698 Thats very kind of you. I may take you up on that. I would much prefer to live some where rural but we have two teenage boys who have hobbies that require them to be closer to a city. Like you, one of them likes cycling, but other hobbies include boxing/combat sports, acting, drums, guitars, football, tennis. It is the acting that makes Glasgow more appealing for the acting schools, etc. But there is a great boxing gym in Falkirk, so it's a bitt of a headache. Stirling of course for the tennis. I have no idea how to message on KZfaq.
