Bathroom Renovation- Drywall Taping- 1st and 2nd coat (Part 1)
www.russolinatzpainting.com
In this video, I show you how to drywall tape (1st and 2nd Coat) a newly installed piece of drywall that has a wide gap. I profile the drywall Butt joint and drywall factory joints. I pre-fill or pack the gap first with a Setting type mud (Plaster of Paris mixed with USG All Purpose joint compound). This not only fills the gap, but also creates a smoother surface to tape to and allows the drywall paper tape to embed to a more even surface, resulting in less bubbling. I also fill the drywall screw holes and fix some other imperfections in the old drywall using the Plaster of Paris quick set mud. I use a Hyde drywall Hawk and a 12 inch Marshalltown Trowel to apply the drywall compound.

Hey Russ. Thank you for your DO diligence. I appreciate your feedback. I like your videos because you attack and air all problems. Most drywall KZfaq videos do not show the variety of problems you encounter and repair. I think some would consider pre-filling damaged edges, in lieu of replacing damaged sections, as bad publicity; but on the contrary, these are issues DIY'ers WANT/NEED TO SEE, and what works and what does not work. So thank you very much..... Wayne

Dude - you are my hero! Thank you for such clear, thourough, and detailed instructions! I am actually mostly done with my attempt to repair the drywall around the tub/shower insert in our bathroom. I used regular drywall mud to fill a gap made when I removed about an inch of water damaged drywall around the top edge of the insert (I guess the old caulk failed?). My plan was to imbed 2” mesh tape over the filled gap, next. Do I need to knock out the mud I used and refill the gap with plaster mixed in the mud, instead, or do you recommend some other approach to repair it?Thanks for any help or suggestions! I'm a great drywaller but a terrible taper, it's an art. One thing I can say, a good drywaller always takes into consideration making a clean job for the tapers... especially if they were using a taping gun. Set those screws and try to keep gaps to 1/8th. The tapers will love you for it.

I had similar issues going on where my vanity is I had a pin hole leak in a pipe in the wall so had to cut out almost a 2'x2' square cut in the plaster wall after repairing all the plumbing I decided to cut thin piece of plywood anchored it to the wall with drywall screws but before I did that I had to use small drywall piece to one side of the 2'x2' hole but filled it in with plaster patch sanded out smoth on the edges turned out good but I didn't want to seal up the 2'x2' section so I could keep an eye on the pipes, my vanity hides the wood panel so I am fine with that.

Great job Russ. Best drywall education I have ever had, very thorough. On repairs of this nature, do you add the plaster of paris only to the first couple layers to fill in the joints, or are you using that mix for all coats?
@RussOlinatzPaintShow
@RussOlinatzPaintShow 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve I really appreciate your comment and question. Just use the plaster of Paris for your first few coats. Then use just what ever topping mud. I just use All Purpose mud because it sands more easily and I can speed up its drying time. Again, I can also add plaster of Paris to it, which greatly increases your productivity in a short amount of time. Where you from ? Russ

I wonder what is the difference between your mix with drywall compound and plaster of paris, and the dry mix you get in a bag that you add water to? It dries quickly and sets by chemical reaction rather than just drying in the air. Would this be the same thing sortof?
@RussOlinatzPaintShow
@RussOlinatzPaintShow 5 жыл бұрын

Russ from the looks of your instagram site your having a great summer, enjoy. I have a professional question for you if I may, I'm getting ready to paint my bathroom , its a small area cause I had most of the bathroom tiled. I have never had any luck with using semi-gloss or high gloss paint on walls, on woodwork never a problem . I've already spackled all the imperfections and primed it with Zittzer primer "its covers all sins, its the best. Now in the past when Ive used semi-gloss on walls when its dried it looks streaky when the light shines on it. I have a good china bristle purdy brush for the cut out and bought a good non shed roller, and the paint which was suggested to me by the guy at home depot is "BEHR paint & primer all in one, Interior Semi Gloss Enamel. The color I'm using is very light grey covering beige. Do you have any pearls of wisdom on how to roll this paint on without any streaks?? Thanks, Ed
@RussOlinatzPaintShow
@RussOlinatzPaintShow 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed - Thanks for your questions. Make sure to prime the whole wall again with the primer. Is the primer the Zinsser Bulls Eye 123? Russ
@eadl714
@eadl714 5 жыл бұрын
Russ, thanks for responding. Yes it is Zinsser Bullseye 123 water based interior/exterior primer that I used to prime over all the spackled nail holes and imperfections. So you want me to give it another coat of Zinsser primer, not a problem. Russ, you are aware that the Behr paint is Paint/Primer all in one interior semi gloss enamel. Not to jump topics but last year I painted the garage door, its one of the rolling steel doors like the ones that cover store windows in the ghetto, well i cleaned it up and painted it with oil base Rustleum and in 6 months it all pealed off. Then I did it over and I sanded all the rustleum off and primed it with Zinsser bullseye and repainted it with good latex paint and it looks great. The reason it peeled off is because the door was GALVANIZED. Thant's again Russ enjoy the rest of the summer. Ed

Russ, have you ever considered teaching the trades at a vo-technical high school? you would be an excellent teacher with vast knowledge of skills to share with today's youth.
@RussOlinatzPaintShow
@RussOlinatzPaintShow 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed- Thanks for sharing that! Yes, I am aware of the Behr paint is a Paint/Primer. Whenever you work with high sheen paint, you had better create a totally sealed, even surface to apply it on top of. Otherwise, you will see flashing and texture differences from where the repairs where. Also, the more you prime, the more you build up a roller texture to match the existing to further hide where you prepared. Paint/Primers are great paints to use, when going over an already painted surface. They adhere well and cover better than existing paints. Anytime there is joint compound in use, its basically like chalk, so its going to suck in what ever you put on top of it. I coat of primer isn't enough a lot of times. Prime twice, helps keep the doctor away. Russ

Could the same effect be achieved by using hot mud mixed with all purpose in place of p.o.p.? Just as in this series of videos where you didn't install the drywall, I'm dealing with the same thing. However, I have a few long joints that aren't flush because the existing drywall is 5/8" + outside corner bead + mud and the new is 1/2" with the recessed edge. Shims weren't used like they should have been so I've got at least 1/2" difference to fill in and taper out, which takes a ton of mud and a ton of set time. Not sure if that makes sense or not... There was a closet with the sliding doors that was abandoned and new drywall put across to make just one solid wall. That's why there's corner bead... Your feedback is very much appreciated.

Hi Jay You can very well use that if you don’t mind cleaning up the drill and bucket after each mix. Sometimes it’s easier when working alone to just mix up the mud pie for each coat. It’s sets in 10 minutes and only have to clean your blades. Have you ever worked with Plaster of Paris? Russ

All politeness aside.... been watching a few of your videos and for the best part nothing to have issues with...but this one I'm wondering why you didn't take out the gap above....you have drywall sitting on the floor.... why? 1/2" minimum from floor... take out 1/2" at top and straighten out that gap... tryna help those who need help.... think about what you're doing a work smarter...not harder

Hi Albert I do use Quik set for larger jobs. I really like not having to clean drill mixer and bucket. It also sets in 10 minutes when mixed together. I then can mix more parts of the pie to start the 10 minute process again. Any waste gets formed to a ball and laid down on the mixing board to easily throw away. Al I have to clean is my taping tools. Russ

before you give pointers on how to drywall, do your homework in your picture you show a piece of drywall that was installed on the wall, that leaves gaps the top and both sides. what you should done was lay the drywall against the wall ( before you removed the old sheetrook) and traced around it and there wouldn't be any big gaps if done right

Learning how to patch is useful, but wouldn't it have made more sense to simply replace the old dry wall with $50 of new sheet rock? Throwing a patch on that crap is going to be more work than taping clean new wall board. It would look far more professional as well.
