Batman 89 is 30 years old now - did you know that it had eight unique games tied to it? NES, Game Boy, Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, arcade, Amiga and other PCs, PC Engine (Japan’s TurboGrafx-16), and two Tiger LCD games. Let’s count them down as true Batman fans - not just ranking them by game quality, but also taking how well they represent the move into account.

Good job on this one. By the way I like the fact you chose to premiere it on June 23, the date of the release of Batman 89 in movie theaters 30 years later.

As a Batman-obsessed youth through childhood, I couldn't wait for the movie to come out. Being in the UK, our exposure to Batman was a lot more limited - we'd had the TV show and (occassional) cartoon; plenty of toys, and I imagine the comic books were available in bigger cities (though certainly not where I lived); but the summer of 89 saw Batman merchandise pick up like never before. There was the novelisation, making-of books, t-shirts, toys, etc, and plenty of reprints of comics suddenly available. One of my favourite was a series of paperback books reprinting the Batman of the late 40s through to the early 60s, with ek themed around a big-name villain (Catwoman, the Penguin,, two Joker books) and one one with Robin. There was also a series of prose short stories which were a lot of fun. And then of course, there were the computer games. Ocean had actually published to prior Batman games - the first (Batman) was an isometric puzzle platform, with you controlling a podgy Adam West Batman, attempting to rebuild the Batmobile, with the Batcave being full of various traps and monsters. It was rubbish. But it was the first Batman game ever published on any platform. Then, they released Batman: The Caped Crusader, which was a much more accurate-to-the comics version of Batman, attempting to defeat the Joker (or Penguin, if you flipped the tape over). Batman the Movie (as it was typically known) was amazing. Ocean re-used a technique they'd created for their RoboCop game (which they had then licensed as an arcade to Data East) where they would turn specific scenes or sequences into levels of the game. I had the Spectrum version, which was a lot of fun. But when I upgraded to the Amiga, I refought it for that machine, and was blown away by the Batmobile and Batwing levels. The Amiga version is by far the best - the PC version is horrible.

I love your story and your insight! I actually started out playing the PC version, and I could never get the controller calibrated properly in DOSBox -- maybe it was the game actually sucking there. But I had fun with Amiga just using the keyboard. Pretty impressive use of voice for the time, too.

This was a great video! I had no idea until I watched it, it wasn't the Joker in act 4 on the TV screens. Silly enough, I read some stuff by Yuichi Ueda recently who complained while developing/designing this, he took source material from the comics, totally unaware the copyright was different from comics to movie and was scolded for it by Warner Brothers themselves. Maybe that explains why some characters are completely out of place or explains their inclusion in-game and absence from Burton's movie. I do think, as objectively as possible, Batman is a phenomenal NES early platformer. Sunsoft absolutely nailed everything about it, and it holds up just as well as late NES games such as Bucky O'Hare. I also very much agree, casually, the bosses feel more like "what? I survived!?" more than feeling like you've learned anything - until Firebug, act 5 and Joker anyway. The game forces the player to learn then as there's a huge difficulty increase. Great video!

Awesome comment! I’d love to see that interview if you happen to remember where you read it. I worked on Spider-Man games myself, and I know the differences between film and comic licenses all too well. I can see that scolding happening. 😀

Man i cant tell you how many times i threw my controller and bit its cord out of sheer frustration from the NES game. Just as hard as Ninja Gaiden and just as rewarding when i finally beat it. Most favorite NES soundtrack of all time. Even now at 35 years old, i know a Batman NES song the minute i hear it. Great vid!

I was 8 when the movie came out and super excited to see it. My dad took me to a drive-in theatre to see it... Unfortunately at that age I would basically just pass out when I was tired. I saw the opening scene, and then suddenly the credits were rolling. I was devastated, lol.

I'm bummed for both of you guys -- two amazing movies you just had to see in a theater when they were out! 😀 Oh, and not to sound like too much of a commercial, but I really think you'd enjoy the video that directly preceded this countdown back in June 2019 -- the video pinned to my KZfaq channel, actually. It's all about how the movie's hype shaped me as a superhero geek.

Correction for NES Batman: the other two weapons aren't "guns". One is a 'spear gun', as per the game's own manual, which the character used in the movie even for offensive purposes. Granted in the game it explodes at the end like a grenade, but nonetheless judged based on the intended description and the limitations of the hardware it is representative of the film to an extent. But even debating it could be described as a 'gun' even if it is not bullets he is shooting the other is a three-way shuriken (ninja star), or as it is called in the game's manual a "Dirk" (edged weapon). more in line with the Batman character. Now- it is true that Batman hasn't used straight up shurikens, and that we wouldn't see him being around them until Batman Begins 16 years later, but this was likely the result of the 'gamification' of what was on the screen. Batman up until then had been shown using the so called "Batarang" usually with a rope attached to it, to either climb or tether enemies. At the same time he had shuriken-type Bat-shaped throwing stars of sorts that would not behave like a batarang but would be used for offensive purposes. In trying to make this distinction with smaller graphics, while adding variety to the gameplay, the game shaped the weapon as shurikens though they read like spinning bat shaped 'stars' . All in all, however, it is a mistake to call at least one of the other two weapons a "gun".

I played through the NES version, and ONLY that version. I never looked into or knew much about the other versions, until The Angry Videogame Nerd covered them. But my other favorite was Batman Returns on Super NES. Great emulation of the look and feel of the movie, and the Final Fight arcade game play was the best. A great beat 'em up!
