Neh, its not this complicated and hidden. The game basicly tells you everything in order to understand the ending. Short version is Batman faked his death, but he actually "killed" Bruce Wayne in order to be a full time new Batman. Hes more radical because the amount of toxin in his body kinda made him "crazy". At the end we have a lot of time inside his head when he switching between Joker and Batman. At the end Batman "wins" but he changed. He got even more motionless, brutal. Also he states in the game that this batman has to die in order to a new Batman could rise in his ashes thats even scarier than the actual Batman. So he fakes his death and come back with an even more brutal and scarier version of batman.

It's Bruce playing his own ghost. He pulled a Phantom of the Opera, which is an open book that can be found throughout the game, turned to the chapter "Is it the ghost?". Even Scarecrow says at the end "Maybe you'll become a ghost", if you wait long enough instead of going to the storage depot. Penguin taunts Batman about getting a new costume if you complete his story after Scarecrow... The novelization adds the detail of Green Eyes, which Batman has been fighting throughout the game... Also, Sefton Hill said in an AMA that Batman, as in this Batman, becomes a more badass version of Batman at the end... Batman wasn't a myth anymore. He was a man in a costume who worked with the police and had allies and sidekicks. It's not about changing the man behind the mask, but about creating a new, more powerful myth...

If you look closely, you can see calendar man in the Crowd of Vicky Vales report. In Arkham city, if you exhaust all his dialog, he will say “I will be there at the end”. Awesome attention to detail by the developers.

IMO, to leave us confused and clueless just as gotham citizens is part of the ending of knight because the batman we've been playing since asylum is dead (exposed). Nightmare/Ghost Batman is Bruce Wayne. True he's most likely using the Batman beyond outfit, but since he's now immune to Scarecrow's toxins, and no doubt took some for himself to reverse engineer his own version of the toxin that he can somehow use against criminals without them knowing and not affecting bystanders. Batman himself said that Gotham needed something scarier than Batman, so why not make a scary-ghost batman where criminals will now say that Batman is haunting the city, that would freak any criminal out.

Nightmare Batman is just a representation of the criminals' fear of Batman. They've been told he's dead but deep down they don't really believe that, deep down they're terrified that Batman will come back and some of them having been exposed to Scarecrows toxin doesn't help with that paranoia.

The trick to riddler stuff, for me, was to do it as soon as i came across it, if I could, and after the story, I would do riddler stuff in between other side quests. After all the side quests, I had ~20 riddler trophies/riddles, and that was VERY manageable. Also, other than car chases, I would ALWAYS drop what I was doing to interrogate riddler goons.

Hey people isn't the ending obvious. Batmans biggest fear was the joker so when he was exposed to the fear toxin he saw the joker who was dead. Every criminal in Gotham city was exposed to the fear toxin when scarecrow released it over the city. Their is NO new batman but the fear of batman remains within the minds of the criminals and supervillians alike. They know he is dead, but their biggest fear is the batman coming back from the dead and breaking their bones and foiling their plans. Hence why the fear fixing shows batman as a demon rather then the BATMAN himself.

Imagine a diluted fear serum in the Gotham drinking water that can be activated with a special molecule microwave similar to the Nolan movie concept but more precise and nonlethal and only works on those who batman wants to scare.

It's Bruce using fear toxin. He has access to make a useful toxin that won't kill and he never said he'd quit, he said no one would ever meet batman, he might see Selina as Bruce and Grayson is being told they'll never meet which by definition yeah, since he was told as bruce is batman, the knightfall protocol, to kill the knight and to allow a new nightmare to rise, bruce has changed what he stands for now and basically killing batman will make it easy to protect his loved ones and the toxin allowing him to still be a hero

I'm sorry, but as much as I would like to believe that Terry McGinnis is the Nightmare Batman, you're completely wrong. Terry cannot be Nightmare Batman, neither can any of the Robins. The reason why is because of one very simple principle: that is terrible writing. Allow me to elaborate. Making Terry or any of the Robins the Nightmare Batman violates a very important writing principle called the Chekhov Gun. Chekhov's underlying idea is that all elements within a singular narrative must be used and you must eliminate all irrelevant details from a story. He wrote that you should never draw attention to a loaded gun unless you plan to use it. If you don't use the gun, it sets up for confusion and disappointment. Your theory violates the Chekhov Gun principle in that there is no set up. It's the equivalent of a random character pulling a gun from nowhere and shooting it. The element was never introduced and, therefore, leaves the audience confused and thinking "Where did that come from?" In this case, the element is Terry McGinnis. Never in the Batman Arkham timeline was Terry McGinnis ever introduced as a playable character or as an NPC. The only thing that ties him to this timeline is the presence of the Batman Beyond Batsuit, which was originally worn by Bruce Wayne before he began to have health problems. This Batsuit was also used in Arkham City as a skin, but Terry was never introduced there either. Also, there are other batsuits available, so if the very presence of the batsuit means that Terry McGinnis is a viable candidate for Nightmare Batman, then by all rights, so is Adam West, since his suit is available, too. So according to the Chekhov gun principle, Terry needs to be established to be accepted into the Arkham timeline, and the presence of a batsuit skin does not qualify as an introduction to the narrative. You might be thinking that since he's been introduced into the comic book series, he doesn't need to be introduced in the Arkham video games. This is also wrong. Although the games borrow from a lot of the different comic book narratives, Arkham is its own timeline and "Earth". Because of that every character and element you're going to use needs to be reintroduced. That's why in some way or form, the Wayne Murders need to be brought up. The only reason Nightwing and Robin can enter into the Arkham storyline is because their characters were introduced in minigames and DLC storylines. Plus, their character profiles are in-game elements. Jason Todd would have been a huge breach of the Chekhov Principle if it weren't for the fact that the reveal was made AFTER Nightwing and Robin were officially made canon, and his identity was further elaborated by the flashbacks. If Nightwing and Tim Drake weren't introduced, then Jason Todd (being the 2nd Robin) would have nowhere to fall in line and without the flashbacks to elaborate on what happened to him, his vendetta against Bruce would be undermined. So since Batman: Arkham is its own storyline, we can't just say that anyone from the comic books can enter in all willy-nilly and become Nightmare Batman because they are non-canon until they are introduced. If Terry had somehow made a brief cameo in the background as someone you save and he introduced himself, then your argument could have a shred of plausibility, but that would lead to questions of "Where would Terry get the fear toxin considering he never met the actual Scarecrow?" The last reason why Terry can't be Nightmare Batman is because there is already a Chekhov Gun introduced in the Arkham Storyline that needs to be addressed. In his final conversation with Selena Kyle, Bruce says, "Gotham needs something more. Something worse to defend her. She needs a new myth, a legend more powerful than I can be right now." So what does he mean? Well that's where the english language comes into play. There are these new things the kids are using these days called "wordplay" and "symbolism". Remember when Gordon says, "This is how the Batman dies." This was clever wordplay. What is meant is that the Batman as we know him has died. Well what does that mean? Let's look at the symbolism in Batman. Bruce Wayne has 2 personas: Bruce and the Batman. Batman is the symbol of inescapable justice, yet, he is still bound by a strict moral code that is imposed on him by his Bruce persona. That's what makes him a Knight. The rogue's gallery is well aware of this and because of it, they push and tempt him to break his code, getting worse and worse, committing greater and greater atrocities knowing that all Batman is going to do is beat them up a little bit and they would go to a woefully under funded asylum until they broke out again. When Scarecrow unleashed the fear toxin on Gotham, Bruce knew that his enemies no longer viewed him as a threat, but as a thug. The villains with the most influence and power didn't fear him. They were like children who weren't afraid of being spanked anymore. That's why Bruce started to say goodbye to everyone, before he was even unmasked. He realized that a more brutal legend needed to be born. One without the strict code of ethics. Hence the name KnightFall. He is a Knight who has abandoned his code. But Batman couldn't do this as long as Bruce Wayne was still alive. Bruce would never cross those lines. This is why he tells Selena that the new legend needs to be "more powerful than [he is] now." The Batman persona has to completely takeover Bruce's psyche. The Knightfall protocol was Batman being unmasked and Bruce Wayne and the Batman "dying" so that a new Batman, unfettered by a moral code could be born. Thus, the memory of Bruce and the original Batman would be untarnished as the Nightmare Batman instills a fear into the enemies of Gotham that they are no longer safe. The gloves are coming off. All of this culminates into a much richer narrative than Bruce is unmasked, commits suicide to avoid vigilante and embezzlement charges (the fact that Alfred asks, " Are you sure about this?" points to how it is impossible that the explosion was an assassination plot), and then a random character that was never introduced puts on the cowl. In short, the identity of the Nightmare Batman is a Bruce Wayne that has been consumed by the identity of Batman.

They set up Batman: Incorporated. Thomas Elliott is acting as Bruce and Batman is focusing 100% on his fight against crime.

If they would be a Post-Arkham Knight Battle for the Cowl story arc, it can't feature Nightwing, Red Hood, and Red Robin. Because these three have already planned for their own futures and Batman completely abides to them. So the story would be better off with new people. Terry McGuiness would be the most fitting main protagonist in this story arc.

I think it's possible he teleported to the Watch Tower to avoid dying from the explosion. I highly doubt he'd kill himself in an explosion that would kill Alfred too so I assume he came with him. There are a few references to other justice league members in the game so I assume the Justice league might be existing during this time. And for those who don't know, in some shows and versions of the Justice league that I've seen they're able to teleport to the Watch Tower.

Terry McGinnis is batman beyond (several decades into the future) nightmare Batman appeared present day-the same night Gordon was going to Tim and Barbara’s wedding so it can’t be terry. Also the Batman beyond suit is significantly different from the nightmare Batman suit- when Batman injects scarecrow with fear toxin the nightmare batman is shown WITH a cape and significantly larger shoulder armor than the Batman beyond suit… we know nightmare Batman is not Jason, Dick, or Tim so it is most likely Bruce Wayne pretending to be his own ghost.

It turns out that Scarecrow's plan ended up working in Bruce's favor. Somehow he was able to modify his toxin to genetically influence the manic behavior of potential criminals. I can't think of a more logical retirement.

Also in Batman Beyond harley Quinn has kids. And in Arkham City you can see their is pregnancy test next to harley Quinn out fit and it is positive

I want it to be Terry Mcginnis. Have Rocksteady make one last Arkham game and call it Batman: Beyond Arkham. Change Terry's origin as being both the son of Batman and Catwoman. Under Selina's consent, Amanda (the Wall) Waller secretly trains Terry to become the new Batman and he deals with new criminals from the show and modified batman enemies to fit his lore like Royal Flush Gang, the Mechanical Gang: Whip, Rush, and Sawz? I think that's their names ( the April episode where they get a doctor to put weapons in their system and use what turns out to be Whip's girl as a means to do it) Even bring in Chappal who takes advantage of Bane's venom. Finally: Have a better villain than Arkham Knight, like have it be Damian who wants the cowl for himself and outdo his father as a better Batman like he always thought he'd be, only for Terry to turn out as the better Batman. (I never liked Damian) The game will be Epic, as well as the true end and new beginning to the Batman's legacy.

Came here 6 years later just to say that it was still Batman in the end, the third dosage of the fear toxin made Batman finally evolve into something more brutal than ever before, the second dosage made him into what Batman feared and that was to be the joker (a killer) but once he got the third dosage, the joker (The one inside Batman) couldn’t handle it because his mind isn’t as strong as Batman’s, Batman took back his body and killed off the Batman he was before to protect the people he loved and to and to kill off what he was before and be born again as something more, a motionless, brutal, vengeance, no more Bruce Wayne, just a full on Batman

You know, we actually have TWO other options for who Nightmare Batman is. It could either be Terry McGuinness, or the Ghost of Batman. If you play the Catwoman’s Revenge DLC, you can hear thugs talking about Nightmare Batman, suggesting that he could be the Ghost of Batman. I personally think that it’s the Ghost of Batman rather than Terry McGuinness. Another reason: Terry is from the year 2039, and the events of Batman: Arkham Knight take place in 2015. Unless they have time machines in 2039, then Nightmare Batman HAS to be Bruce Wayne’s Ghost.

Before Terry is even a part of the picture there both considerably older. Nor do I think that Terry would be ok with utilizing such a weapon as such right off the bat. Instead, Bruce in the beyond outfit similar to the beginning of beyond. Although, correct me if i'm wrong, I don't recall any reference in beyond to Bruce dying in the time line gap between story lines. Unless there's to be a reboot of beyond to match this theory there's several minor differences between worlds. But I do agree that nightmare bat is definitely that same suit.
