22:50 - Penguin was a child murderer. Batman reads about this while researching Penguins background with the circus because he knows he's head of the red triangle gang. It's in the newspaper article he reads in the Batcave with Alfred. It's implied but never proven. His whole MO for coming back into society was to carry out the murders of the first born children of Gotham, as way of revenge for what happened to him. He first made himself seem sympathetic and a hero by staging saving the mayor's son and looking up his back story of rejection by his own parents to fool Gotham into empathy with him. You see penguin in the public records writing down all the children's details. His plan to kill the children was side tracked by Shrek who proposed he become Mayor (for shreks own agenda to get the power plant built because he seen how the public reacted to him). It appeared Penguin was enjoying the power and elation that being in potential to office brought him. Catwoman sees the list of children he was planing on killing when she visits his office "what's this, already an enemies list and not even in office yet?" penguin snatches at it and warns her away from the list. It's Only when Shrek turned his back on him (whether or not he knew what Shrek was using him for or not, Im not sure) - after Batman played the soundbite "I've played this stinkin city, like a harp from hell" - did penguin revert back to his original murderous plan.

Yep. I kinda hate how Bruce reading about the "Aquatic Bird Boy" tends to be overlooked by people who keep claiming that Oswald was raised by penguins and had been in the sewers all 33 years. The Batcave scene shows that Oswald, at one point, was part of the circus and probably learned how to read, write, etc. from them.

@@SuperHousePodcast Yeah. What I like about these Batman movies, and maybe older movies in general, is we don't need a lot of exposition. They are telling a specific main story and all the wee side details are added and hinted at to give a bigger picture without hitting you over the head with it. We don't need big long explanations to where it comes across heavy handed. I think that scene especially tells the audience what they need to know about how evil Oswald actually is and at the same time tells you about his background. Something similar to the 89 movie when Bruce is reading Jack Napiers profile. If you look carefully when Bruce opens the folder you can see a picture of young Jack, covered by some paper, Bruce throws his more recent mug shot photos on top of it, completely covering it. If Bruce seen the young picture would he have recognised him!? That's what I love about these. It's a wee nuget, a wee clue you would never have noticed on a first viewing.

Now I'm annoyed that Max wasn't called Rupert Thorne! :) I never thought about it before.

Tim Burton and his girlfriend Julie Hickson's 1985 treatment has Rupert Thorne and Silver St. Cloud. It was Sam Hamm that changed Rupert Thorne to Carl Grissom and Sam Hamm also replaced Silver St. Cloud with Vicki Vale in his 1986 script that became Batman (1989). Max Shreck was kinda like another Rupert Thorne type but he was more like the Donald Trump and Ebenezer Scrooge archetype.

I think this was my first live action Batman movie! I had the VHS when I was kid, and watched it over and over again... I was born in 1992 lol, and I was like four maybe five years watching Catwoman run around in a skin tight suit and the Penguin biting a guy's nose off

My mum took me to see this film. I can remember waiting in line outside as cinema employees were pulling kids older than me out of the queue because they were considered too young. I think I had just turned 10 a few days before. My overriding memory upon seeing the movie was that I felt like i'd been gut-punched as I left the cinema :) I enjoyed it, I enjoyed the downer ending. I enjoyed how sad it made me feel, if that makes any sense?

@@walter_the_wobot2349 It absolutely makes sense. I watched Batman Returns as a 10 / 11 years old, on TV and every winter since then, I always get a nostalgic memory of the Gotham look/feel from the film. The film's ending always evoked a feeling of a calm sadness, loneliness and a bittersweetness. I know "hardcore" comic book fans view Batman Returns as a bad Batman movie, but I think the film really captures the essence of Batman.

Oh, chemistry between Keaton and Pfeiffer is definitely real in this one. I love every scene with them. The whole mistletoe thing with that double reveal is great, both being unable to live normal life etc. To me this movie is about failure.

The McDonald's toy Penguin was definitely based on the Danny Devito one from the film.

The Box Office was still an issue. While it did make a considerable profit, it cots twice as much as the first one and grossed about $150-million less. It certainly underperformed and was considered a box office disappointment.

It’s interesting that Batman never quite buys into The Penguin and his story. Even though you see he sympathizes with him, he also suspicious and I think it’s literally what Alfred says to him in the cave researching the Red Triangle Gang “Must you be the only lonely man-beast?” And what Penguin says to him being jealous because he’s a genuine freak and Batman has to wear a mask.

Batman Returns is a very interesting movie. I think overtime it has developed into a cult movie and is very niche. Like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it has its fans. I like Batman Returns a bit more than BvS, but to each their own. I do think there is a lot to admire about this movie, I think for Tim Burton fans there is a lot to enjoy.

Difference to BvS is Batman Returns is an actually good movie. It's just not a very good Batman movie.

I have to disagree about Batman and Robin being Schumacher unchained. The studio interference pushing for toyetic qualities and family-friendliness was even stronger than it was for Batman Forever. I think Schumacher unchained would have been closer to The Lost Boys.

I don’t see it that way. I think the canopies broke her fall. She was unconscious and the cat biting her fingers simply woke her up.

I saw the original on the big screen but watched the shit out of the vhs. With all it's faults as a Batman film, it's still an entertaining original vision.

Catwoman stole nothing? Catwoman stole my heart. Sorry Hathaway, not sorry Barry, Pfeiffer is Catwoman. Pun intentionally ignored, she's perfect in this. I knew it BEFORE my balls worked, too, by the way. 😝 So it's not all vacuum-sealed hormones.
