On December 17, 1971 future NFL QB Tommy Kramer led San Antonio Lee to the state championship. 49 years and 4 months later, it remained the 3rd and last team state championship for LEE until the Volunteer soccer team beat Cinderella Rockwall Heath 2-0 for the state title and ended a drought without a title at 18,019 days (or 432,456 hours, 25,947,360 minutes
or 1,556,841,600 seconds).
Henry Bowland, whose dad Mark won the 1987 state title at San Antonio Alamo Heights scored in the 1st half, ending a scoring drought of 196 minutes for NEISD schools at the soccer final. Bowland missed a PK later and the Hawks (15-9-4) had the apparent tying goal waved off by offside.
Giovani Garcia scored in the 2nd half and LEE (28-1-0) was never threatened again. Joey Batrouni recorded another playoff shutout and finished his career allowing only 9 goals in 19 playoff matches.
After the match, football coach Danny Kloza ran around the field with an unlit cigar in his mouth, the players brought the golden trapezoid to the student section, and Kramer called the winning locker room after the match.
Bowland was named the match MVP 34 years after his dad was a champion. It marked the 3rd state title for Manager David Rogers who won titles as a head manager at Boerne and Boerne Champion. Coincidentally Boerne won the 4A title earlier in the day marking the 1st time 2 SA area schools won state titles on the same day since June 6, 2009.
Rockwall Heath was trying to become the 1st school in UIL history in any sport to win a state championship after not winning its last 7 regular season games/matches.
