The first time I found the baseball factory, I am so happy. I painstakingly take all the bats (over 100 bats) and return, only a day later figure out that the mods in the server allow creating bats from logs. Uuupps..

I love the nail repair option just because once your bat gets on in life you have the mental image of the bat now being more nails than bat anymore. Im not taking the old nails out, im just putting more and more new nails into it.

Retanaru, I just want to say you rock. You are the only channel I have found who is willing to get down to the very nitty gritty of the mechanics in this game. Both in the information and demonstrations. It has definitely helped me survive way longer than I should have been. Keep it up!

Another cool aspect about the spiked bat is that it is the only (good) long blunt weapon that can reliably crit-oneshot zombies at level 1. Other (good) long blunt weapons have too low crit multipliers to do so and require you to level up to at least level 4 to even have a chance to do so (shovels can do so a bit sooner but using shovels at low weapon levels isn't a good idea most of the time, and it is also an unfavourable roll at that point). This makes the spiked bat a pretty strong early game power weapon for a long blunt player and just a really good early game weapon in general.

Baseball bats have been a staple in my PZ arsenal since I started playing in 2014, though Ive been into short blunt for a while now with the abundance of hammers I come across. Sounds like its time to pick up the bat again :D Batman Returns!

I like the crowbar, not just for its durability, but also because it doubles as a tool, albeit one that isn't needed that often.

Still will find myself using the crowbar more due the key ability to not have to worry about its durability in a big fight. This is great for making your weapons last longer but at a certain point I'm not sure it's worth the time to repair a bat with 30 nails rather than attempt to find one of the many, many crowbars and other weapons scattered around the map. Even in situations where crowbars are hard to come by (Ridiculously Rare loot mod for example) the baseball bat is arguably harder to come by (unless you raid the baseball bat factory in LV) since it spawns in fewer loot tables than the crowbar. Good video though! This is a cool fact to know just in case I'm in a situation where I need to use a spiked bat.

A nice advantage regular bats and brobars have over spiked baseball bats is that they don't ruin clothes. Great if you're doing tailoring.

I still prefer the crowbar for one key reason: I like using axes and axes NEED high maintenance to be worth using. You gain maintenance XP every time you swing a weapon and it doesn't loose durability and the bar has a 98.5% chance of not loosing condition and you usually only need to burn through one or two crowbars to get to lvl 3~4 maintenance.

I never understood crowbars having durability. Your hand will break before a crowbar does.

Although I definitely like bats as well for the same reason, I feel like the excessive repairs are kind of unnecessary considering how easy baseball bats are to find compared to other weapons (heck, there's a whole baseball bat factory in Louisville). Edit: I just got to the part of the video where you mentioned the factory.

it the same with Machete on Spear head, but with more effort. When you use machete and almost break, just combine it with spear and then repair it after that take off the machete. Boom you got your self free clean machete with 60-75% durability every time.

I've found that duct tape/wood glue are surprisingly common foraging finds lately, so repairing most weapons isn't a major deal if you're frequently foraging.

I typically elect to use the starter kit with my games because finding your first bag is usually a pain in the ass. The starter kit lets you have a bat and a hammer right out of the gate so as long as you keep it in decent enough condition until you can put nails in it that one bat could last you the entire run.

I straight up made a mod that doubled weapon durability. Because i like to organically use what i scavenge, instead of hoarding a million bats to use for my entire playthrough. Still cool to see some of your vanilla strategies

An extra perk of bats is that if you play with Common Sense (one of the most downloaded mods in the Workshop) and get to Carpentry 4 or 5 ( think 5) you can craft them. Yeah, it's from a mod, but it's such a common mod that I think it applies to a LOT of players.

You should be able to make a makeshift bat with enough carpentry and right weapons

Maintence also does apply. Its condintion lower chance + (maintence X 2) so for example the durability is 10 and condition lower chance is 10 and you have 4 maintence its ends up 10 + (4 x 2) what is 18. Now you lose your durability slower since 1 in 18 is better then 1 in 10 so you gain 80 durability (on average). you can even get higher if you have high maintence. But its less effective when weapons like a crowbar have 1 in 70 so your 4x2 multiplier isnt that effective since 1 in 70 and 1 in 78 doesnt make a huge difference. But if you use low mutiplier weapons you can sometimes double the durability...

I'm a short blunt user due to it's availability but I never thought about it like this for LongBlunt appreciators

the roleplay value of bats is also off the charts

I use the realistic durabilities mod personally so this isn't that big of a factor but I still like the bat because it's fun

Here's a little secret between just you and me: Crowbar doesn't have the crit chance nor multiplier that the wiki says. You can find those values in the crowbar's data, but there's actually _duplicate_ entries, and the 2nd entry overwrites the first. This happens for a lot of items in the game. There was also a period of time where two items even had the same item ID (tongs), but that was fixed. Spiked baseball bats are nice. They are quite rare though unless playing on a server where people spawn with bats (which I dislike, it's imbal), and with the change to repairing, they don't infinitely repair anymore, and they have significantly less durability than a regular bat. While shovels have _even worse_ durability, I like them because their damage and range is higher and they are also a bit lighter (as silly as that may be). Plus if on a server with multi-hit enabled (I know it makes things super easy, but it might also add sprinters or something to compensate), shovels hit 3 targets at once which is really strong. I guess you _can_ always stock up on bats at the Louisville factory though, yeah.

D: I know this can be done with a single one though I value nails too much to throw away +30 of 'em for weapon maintenance. i made a challenge to myself which is the apocalypse sandbox settings except the loot rarity is everything is extremely rare except ranged weapons and also ammo ofc and such thing as repairing is literally impossible let's say you loot a whole firehouse and you're all happy with your axes you cut down trees and one of your 2 axes that you hardly even looted break , and you use duct tape other than it won't do ANYTHING you will NEVER find anything again that you can find for repairing and it's all just so hard

i just took a semi truck to the baseball factory and i legit got like 225 bats so very worthwhile if you are in a large group

This isn't really why bats are the best melee weapon in the game, although it is important. It is because the minimum dmg is so high, meaning at level 9 or 10 (can't remember) you can have a 100 percent chance to one shot. Plus it only weighs 2 pounds vrs the ax's 3. This means your total kill throughput is the highest for any weapon before you have to rest again, and the killing speed is also super high because it swings fast and one shots.

Interesting. Might makes me go back to my trusty crowbar/bat combo instead of the mighty spear i'm often going to.

I never knew you could repair nail bat with nails, this is big news considering you can find nails from foraging. Bat broken? Used all the nails on your base? No worries! Just search for some nails and while at it, you might find some food or bullets.

Crowbar just doesn't usually break fast enough for me not to have found another one by the time it's gone. I get a decent stockpile of them pretty easily and I just like the endless reliability.

lead pipe is my favorite weapon. short blunt is a better weapon type because it's one handed, allowing you to use a flashlight in the other hand, and lead pipes are durable and go in the back slot, which is more valuable than weapons that go into your belt slots.

Yeah the Crowbar is better but it fill more fun to use the Bat,but that is my opinion.....still use the Crowbar lets by honest this shit fills like it docent take damage,you can get it to level 2 maintenance before it loses half of if durability,but yeah with out Crowbars I would use Bats all day long

As a newbie that just picked up the game a few days ago, I had no idea how the repair system worked; I've been favouring griddle/frying pans, hammers and crowbars as weapons; are they good choices? Should I use resources trying to fix them when they break, or try to repair them before they become broken?

Campfires are still the best weapon IMO.

The basic bat is easy to find in schools, sports stores and even bar counters. I don't like adding nails as this destroys cool clothing you find. Just watch out for the stamina drain, you'll get exhausted after 9-10 zeds.

Another factor i prefer bats over crowbar is the range. I don't know of this is purely visual placebo effect or does Crowbar indeed have shorter range but i always used to die with it while kiting large hordes. People love to rate crowbar as such a "God weapon" for its seemingly infinite durability but i just can't count how many times ive died with it whiffing my attack.

I can't leave spears. Sure, durability is an issue, but you can pump out litterally thousands of spears, then take usually useless tools like scalpels, knives ect and exponentially increase it's deadliness

The aluminium baseball bat mod in my opinion is really great. It has the spawn type as crowbars but you can find them easily im sports stores and house garages

I knew the baseball bat was pretty good, but I didn't know about the minimum repair thing. I usually play with 100s of mods, so I use crowbars with more trait's Gordanite perk, but the classic 3 long blunt weapons will always have a place in my heart

I usually start in West Point. I like to make my fist base at the high school, so I can read books, grind electrical, grind mechanics, grind metalworking, kill hundreds of zombies... Decided to do a long blunt build because I was consistently finding 1, 2, 3, or even 4 bats at the gym store room. EVERY TIME I logged in as a long blunt character, there would be exactly 0 bats. I tried 4 times in a row, dying every time because of my unarmedness, and finally said f** it and went back to short blunt. There were 7 ***************** BASEBALL BATS IN THE STORE ROOM. But I then went on to survive for a year and kill 10,000 zombies.

This is a really interesting video, but don't you think this is going to become very dated soon? PZ devs are developing a new system that combines the previous stats from each part of the crafted recipe and preserves them, which likely means that repair stacks are going to transfer over to new items, so while repairing with nails would probably keep working as it does, the idea of "resetting" repairs by adding nails to a broken bat won't work within the next few updates (build42 at the latest)

yeah i love bats aswell, in my server that i play on with friends, we only have proximity chat and there are no rules except no cheating or bug abusing. Ive become the feared owner of the "murder van" basically a van that is all covered up in zombie guts and blood filled to the brim with weapons my favourite being the spiked bat. at first the murder van seems like a blessing in disguise since i arrive at bases i find clearing all the nearby zombies with my trusty spiked bats. after that i go into their bases, incapacitate them (they dont stand a chance against my level 10 tailoring armour) and i amputate their limbs off. (amputation mod meant for stopping infections in the arms) before i burn down their base and leave them for the elements ive ended several long characters theyve had but all in the name of good fun, they like the extra difficulty of being ever paranoid.
