Nice to hear the Northern accent again. I started my 45 year footplate career at Kings cross and we would venture into those strange lands "up North". 😃

That's because in the UK drivers have to known every signal, speed restriction and braking point on the lines they Re cleared to drive on. This can mean trains being cancelled because of the lack of route qualified drivers, unless a inspector is present to take responsibility.

The depth of knowledge is as expected really, drivers have to know a route like the back of their hand before they can drive it alone guards also need a good amount of route knowledge as well

At 14:53 to 14:59, the farm on the left has a narrow gauge railroad, several switches, looks like also grading to extend the track northward. Has good looking limestone ballast. I found it on Google satellite, along the track just west of Castleton Station and Langburn's Bank road. The owner did extend the track slightly west, to add a runaround track (loop).

A most interesting view along with part 1 of the NYMR Esk valley operations. Especially with Chris's [the Driver] commentary highlighting various aspects of the route. it's also most interesting how various of the bridges embankments and cuttings between Grosmont and Battersby were built to accommodate a second track. As this second line was never installed other than as passing loops in some stations. The Grosmont Whitby section was originally double track, up until the eighties as a left over from the old days when the line ran through to Pickering and Rillington on the Scarborough line.

I presume the iron ore traffic from the long closed mines never justied the doubling. Ironically, the line has never been busier.
@neiloflongbeck5705
@neiloflongbeck5705 4 жыл бұрын
@@nymrfootage there weren't many iron stone mines along the Esk Valley. Traffic revenues ever justified the doubling of the line.

That driver sure has a lot of knowledge when it comes to driving the loco along the Esk Valley Line! Though it is hard trying to understand what he is saying to the signaller at Whitby at the 1:06:50 mark but I’m assuming he requests permission to set up a route from NR back onto the NYMR?

I saw a whistle board at 1:13:54 but the horn wasn't sounded. I couldn't see a crossing immediately after that, though, so perhaps there was no need to sound the horn. Was it missed, or did it not need to be sounded at all?

Nice to have a run on a 1250 again. Signed and drove these machines for many miles working all classes of traffic in the 70s/80s. Was one of the Vac brake settings selected on brake changeover switch as sounded as though only one compressor running, took a long time to rebuild air Res ? Good locos, many memories, what I wouldn't give for one more driving turn on a 25 !!

Do you know if NR have a plan to replace some of the old bowstring bridges that have the 10 mph speed restrictions?
@nymrfootage
@nymrfootage 4 жыл бұрын
Many of the bowstring bridges have been replaced since this was filmed. A couple were done about 5 or 6 years ago at Danby and the bridge at Glaisdale near Beggar's Bridge has also been replaced. A couple of other bridges may have also been replaced more recently. If you watch the more recent route learning footage on the EVL from 2015, you can see the new bridges at Danby. The speed restrictions have now been removed. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mJZje5NhzruvhoE.html

I know this might seem a silly question, but do you have to notify anyone about the sheep on the line and also the dead one
@nymrfootage
@nymrfootage 4 жыл бұрын
If there are are a lot of sheep on the line it is advisable to notify the signalman so they can warn other train crews of possible encroachment onto the line. If you run a sheep over you only have to report it if there are more than 6 sheep, I think. Could be 8. Animals like cows or horses are more dangerous as they can cause more damage to a train die to their size and should be reported to the signalman so they can warn other trains of the obstruction. Nowadays trains have GMSR digital phones so they can contact the signalman en route

Has the Battersby to Whitby section always been single lined ?
@nymrfootage
@nymrfootage 3 жыл бұрын
Whitby to Grosmont was double track until the early 1980s. It was then singled to what we use today. Grosmont to Battersby was always single line but had passing loops at each station. These were removed at some point. Not sure if it was the early 1980s when the Whitby to Grosmont section was singled or whether it was earlier. The

What was required on the train to run at line-speed? I couldn't quite make it out the Driver said "if you haven't got (something) on the train you'll be limited to 25mph"
@nymrfootage
@nymrfootage 4 жыл бұрын
There are various issues that could limit the train speed. I've not gone and looked at the video but if you can give a time code I'll take a look. For example if the AWS/TPWS equipment was faulty and the driver has reported the issue to the signalman, the train could continue at reduced speed to get it to its destination and clear the line. Other issues such as a defective horn or a brake on a coach has been isolated also necessitate a reduction in speed.

At 50 seconds why is the signal beside the G showing Red? and passed?
@nymrfootage
@nymrfootage 4 жыл бұрын
The signal was actually yellow but the angle of the camera and the type of bulbs or LEDs in signal look red when filmed by the video camera, also not helped by the white balance being set to warm/cloudy to brighten the image. If the signal had been red you would not get the 'G' to proceed to Glaisdale. It would be blank.
