Are you aware that there are more drive speeds than full steam ahead? That's what they are there for, dealing with deep snow. You must go through a lot of belts banging that drive lever on and off 500 times to get down the driveway.

your snowblowing technique was difficult to watch....i live in Syracuse and we get 120 inches of snow every year...just put that thing at the slowest speed and go...all that stop start stuff was unnecessary....if you fill it up with too much snow, take half a swipe instead....all the start stop cant be good for gears or drive disc in either machine....but i do love that EGO....too bad I have a beast in my Ariens and it still works great after 16 yrs...i do own the 1 stage EGO and use it for my back deck...makes easy work out of it no matter what kind of snow

Great video! I just moved to North Idaho from California. Never dealt with snow before. Your video enabled me to follow along with you, see how it’s done, and see what to expect from the machines. I have decided I’m going with the EGO. I drive an electric car, and I’m just done with the mess, noise, and obsolescence of gasoline engines. I’m not going back to that. I’ve got a paved driveway but very long and very steep. I’m wondering if I should go ahead and start out with 2 sets of batteries, just to be sure that the machine will have enough juice to do the job.

You would do well to read the starting instructions for your gas unit. I've never had to use the electric start on my Toro. For sure, at least cut down the choke after it's started! Oh, and set the ground speed slower and you won't have to "clear the snow out" all the time.

What you are doing is hard on the machine. Drop the forward fear down. You are effectively ramming it into the snow. Being more gradual will get more done faster and more effectively just an opinion from years of experience.

So you know you only lasted 45 mins on ego because you had it on turbo the whole time. I keep mine on lowest and its more than enough unless you have some real hard pure ice type of snow where the plows block you in. Lowest setting lasts you a good while. I do my house which total can hold 4 cars front side walk and my neighbor's yard and sidewalk off a single charge and end with only 1 bar left. Other than that small issue great comparison video.

A few things and I may be repeating what others have commented. You don’t have to hold the power button down to engage the blower. Just press it, let go and grab the right lever. To move it, again you don’t have to push the on button as it’s already on. Just silent. As others said, slow down! You can pull the speed control down much more. I notice you had the Troy on high speed too..

I would say the Ego may be a downgrade compared to a 28" gas blower. The 24" Ego could be too small for you. I'm sure it will do it but it will take you longer and you may need extra batteries. I love the Ego and it replaced my 24" Ariens which was (and still is) a solid machine. Like everyone says don't use turbo mode. You get a lot more time with eco mode and it was plenty of power even for 21" of snow. My guess is that the 2nd gen Ego will come with the 10.0 Ah batteries.

I'm jealous of all that snow. I like the sound of that Ego under load. Thanks for sharing. I bought the Ego 1 stage 2 years ago. I just don't know if I can justify buying the 2 stage, but you blowing review made it difficult to say no. On the Troy Bilt blower, it appears you have the transmission in 7 and therefore have to continually release the forward motion lever. Try moving the transmission lever to 1 or 2 or to whatever speed the blower can handle the amount of snow. Later on I saw you doing the same with the Ego. Slow down the forward motion to match the amount of snow.

@@ralphfraumeni6190 If I was in an area that gets enough snow and I had a big enough area to blow to need that sort of back up I might only have the gas blower. I think for most people with a driveway and sidewalk an Ego is sufficient. If the power goes out and I can't charge my Ego batteries, I've got bigger problems like the house water pipes freezing. In 2016 I bought a great Ariens 28" and a few years later I bought the Ego single stage when that is all Ego had. In 2021 I bought the Ego 2 stage and sold the Ariens. So I could have done what you said but got rid of the Ariens because I just did not want the hassle or noise of gas.

I would love another comparison video but one where you change machines less often. Perhaps 5 to 10 minutes with one and then 5 to 10 minutes with the other and then comparing results and reviewing the pros and cons. At the end of the video, you would want a good view of the results so that we could see with our eyes. The real question is how much do you lose when you go electric. Although more expensive, I would pay for electric if the results are comparable. I would have found that more useful. I won't say anything about starting and stopping because enough people have commented about that. Otherwise, great video. I got a lot out of this. Thank you!

I just sold my 12yr old Simplicity 2 stage 26" snow blower which I had used along side Ego single stage 1st generation snow blower for the past 4yrs. In my case Simplicity cost $1100 vs Ego $800. The Gas snow blowers was PITA. I seem to alwsys forget to drain the gasoline out at the end of season, then the next yr it doesnt start, or it needs a tune up, someone has to come and haul it away and tune it up. Vs Ego. Other than charging the batteries before use, no maintenance what so ever. Ego is game changer and I actually enjoy clearing the snow. Another thing, the gas snow blowers are so heavy, they are exhausting when turning corners compared to the super light Ego. Anyway great video I wish I made a comparison video before I sold mine.

Agree. I have had two snows in the Detroit area since I got it (decent snow today ~7-9 inches I would guess). Eco worked fine for basically all of it. I cranked it to Turbo to blast through the plow pack, and damn did that eat the battery up. The only complaint I have is that the lighter weight sometimes causes it to drive up the snow, although that only really in the plow pack or if I was cutting through some of my previously shoveled piles on the edge of my drive way. Overall I really like it. Especially the lower noise and lack of smelling like a gas can when I am done.

First the positive to which there is not much about this video. The Ego 2 Stage snowblower impressed me. The single stage Ego looks useless. Now the negative 1. Use choke when starting a gas powered snowblower. Starts right up. 2. There is a gear shift for a reason on the Troy built. Take it out of high gear if it can’t handle it and use one of the other lower gears till it can. 3. The Ego also has a speed lever for the wheels. Lower the wheel speed and/or raise the auger speed. Don’t start stop like that. 4. The Ego is still super loud in your video with that high pitched whine.

Battery life? And durability? Are you gonna have to buy a completely new unit after a short product lifetime? How much does a new set of batteries cost? Are they going to be completely worn out just after the warranty expires? And BTW this is not the Troy-Built company that your parents knew; now must units that are labeled Troy-Built, and sold in the big boxstores that I see are manufactured in the Mexico MTD factory.

@tech made easy if you factor for the batteries, the ego is cheaper by $100, and it's clearly much more powerful. I'm curious how the ego would do if you just let it eat at a slightly slower speed instead of stopping it like that for some reason? it would be nice ro redo this with both of them set to the maximum speed they'll keep up without having to stop, will they make it through the windrow at the end of the driveway without stopping, ect... also, the ego doesn't use belts/friction disks, so there are less points of failure/maintenance. also, like all ego products, you don't have to have the auger/blade engaged to drive it

@adamlesandrini312
@adamlesandrini312 Жыл бұрын
@Tech Made Easy I haven't verified this, but if the snow thickness is varied, you should be able to leave it in eco for the augers and it will throttle up/down on it's own and save even more battery. I have a z6, push mowers, and string trimmers, and they all do this, so there's no reason the snow blower shouldn't do the same. This would be an opportunity for ego to make an automatic "constant load" mode like I believe honda has in their highest end snowblowers
@adamlesandrini312
@adamlesandrini312 Жыл бұрын
@@TechMadeEzy yeah, it's the $9300 top of the line hybrid honda that has automatic mode, it's a constant load, max output mode that will just go. you just steer it. Also, didn't catch it if you mentioned this, but the ego has an automatic locking diff that propels both wheels in forward, but allows free turning, like the nice ariens units, but seems to work better and be less finicky over ineven surfaces, as I haven't seen any complaints about it. It's also really easy to push around off, which is appreciated.

All ego batteries fit in all ego tools. 2.5 up to 10. I just wouldnt recommend a 10ah on a string trimmer. Gets a bit heavy HA. But they are all universally fitting.

Up here in west central Canada $1,800 for the Ego. Ahh, no thanks. $1,000 or much less will get a pretty kick ass gas snow blower. You can buy a lot of gas for $800

This works best if you have another use for the batteries, because like any ego tool it works out best if you don't have to factor for the batteries. If you can use the batteries for several things, as they die out you don't have to replace every one that dies. Factoring for the cost of the batteries and charger it's only $800, and it's better than any snow blower you would buy for $800.

and if you want to turn the Chute while you are snowblowing you can let go of the Auger while holding the self propel and it locks in so you can drive and turn the Chute and the handle to the auger locks. I love that.

Super bad comparison you had the choke on the gas machine at start know wonder you had fumes , also much older machine but still run fine. Tell everyone how much ego batteries cost. What are the life expectancy of the batteries.
@brucemacneil
@brucemacneil 3 жыл бұрын
That gas blower is a disaster - the fumes coming out are a mixture of combustion products and aerosolized uncombusted gasoline. Breathing that will shorten a life. The gas age is drawing to an end. That gas blower would have been awesome in 1962. The battery mower is impressive - and worth keeping in mind that it is in its technological infancy. The price - I see the older single stage models often heavily discounted and that 2-stage will be similarly a bargain soon. It already represents excellent value. I have a 2-stage gasoline blower and the only reason it is still in use is that the EGO is sold out everywhere. Our gas blower will soon meet its deserved fate in an electric arc melt furnace.

Also - you have to add another negative to the gas unit - everything in your tool shed stinks like gas and 2-stroke mix.

What was the temperature out there? That deep, wet, and warm out, is very hard on a snow blower. You were lucky to even get through that. I know you wanted deep snow for video but the best thing to do is to snow blow twice to your once before the snow gets to deep on warm sticky snow. Hard on any machine. No matter what model. PS: Your intro music is TOO LOUD! I jump when it comes on. Hurts my ears.

Sitting for a year yes the gas blower will smoke. I find the electric very noisy. A full Jerry Can of gas is cheaper than buying aa second set of batteries if you want to run the machine for a long time. In fact you could buy man, many Jerry Cans of fuel for the price of a pair of replacement batteries. A lot of plastic on the electric and replacement parts are probably a lot more expensive than those of the gas blower. The price of those EGO in Canada is extremely high and not worth it. Besides the amount of heavy snow we get would wear it out.

@@TechMadeEzy I can see its use in light to medium snow areas or for persons who a gas machine is too heavy. My neighbor has an EGO single stage. It cost him $ 800 Canadian with batteries on sale. He can do his 3 car driveway and side walk 2 or 3 times on one charge. However the stuff the plow leaves at the driveway edge is too much for the machine. He checked the two stage and it was $ 2400 bucks CDN with 2 batteries, not including taxes and enviro fees. Extra batteries were almost $ 500 bucks each. However I should talk.. my Craftsman failed the other day and he came to the rescue. :-)

Single stage is nice definitely in light snow but if it’s wet and heavy and especially high no way, too hard to push. The 3 stage works great honestly but very expensive
@garfieldsmith332
@garfieldsmith332 3 жыл бұрын
@@TechMadeEzy Yes. I have a two stage and it works very well. Rally thick wet snow will clog the chute every so often. Another neighbor went from 2 stage to one stage and (both gas) after a couple of years went back to a two stage. because of the reasons you stated. Another thing with two stage is the engine size. I have seen some with a 175 cc engine. Not good for rally heavy snow. As long as mine works I will keep it. Yes the three stage are very expensive, and more so up here in Canada.

@TechMadeEzy
@TechMadeEzy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim 1st thanks for watching. Honestly my video wasn’t bias, gas definitely killed it with price and long term costs. I didn’t claim a winner, just provided some points. They both get the job done and both have their benefits depending on who the consumer is. You can’t get around fumes, oil, gas etc when you are using a gas snow blower just like you can’t get around batteries costing the price of a gas snow blower around $350 to $450 depending on 7.5ah or 10ah.

You don’t know what your doing because your leaving the motor on full choke position making it run 4X richer/stinking & smoking all over the place on cold startup. Your supposed to turn off/open the choke up shortly after the motor starts to lean the mixture & smooth out the motor & your leaving it on way too long giving a truly false impression that the gas motor normally spews put all that over rich mixture smoke all the time when that’s not the case at all. Also, you mention cleaning of carb on gas blower,I have never had to clean a carb on my blower since 10% ethanol fuel came out by only adding a couple ounces marine grade stable to a full tank of fuel & running it for 10mins prior to Storrage for 30yrs+! Same goes for my mower,Classic car & motorcycles that all see 5-6months of long seasonal Storrage too without 1 carb/10% ethanol fuel related issue using a proper dose of marine grade stabil in a full tank of fresh fuel run into motor 10mins prior to Storrage.

Yup! Agreed! I get that you prefer the eGo snow blower over the gas powered one. Nothing wrong with that at all. I too own an eGo trimmer, leaf blower and lawn mower. I also however own a Craftsman 24 inch gas snow blower. I appreciate your comparison videos a lot. They’ve helped me come to the conclusion that I’m keeping my gas snow blower. I can’t justify spending that much money on a snowblower when the gas works fine as long as I change the oil yearly as well as run the tank empty before spring and summer storage. It gives me no issues starting up during the winter time. With that said, I am also a big fan of eGo.
