Sega Lord X

Battle Arena Toshinden was one of the most popular games on the PlayStation in its first year on the market. It was frequently used against Virtua Fighter as proof the hardware was superior. It came to the Sega Saturn at the end of 1995, but didn't quite live up to fan expectation.

Episode Notes:
1. Captured on real hardware.
2. Toshinden would see numerous sequels and spinoffs on the Playstation, but only one, Toshinden URA, for the Saturn.
3. Toshinden would be joined by other Playstation ports on the Saturn. Wipeout, Destruction Derby, and many others eventually saw release as well.
4. The Japanese version of this is really inexpensive. I've seen it go for $10. The sequel too.
5. There are numerous missing background effects in the Saturn version. Aside from the polygon elements mentioned in the video, the city arena loses the giant TV broadcasting the fight, and the waterfall is different in the canyon stage.
6. I thought about running a side by side against VF2, but what was the point? There is such a stark contrast between the two, it's like comparing a 32X game to the Saturn.

The PSX version was one of the few games I actually played with my grandfather before he passed on, and he really got into it too. I remember my grandmother laughing in the background when one of us lost a match. Good memories. Tekken would have been too much for him. The simplistic nature of the game is what made it accessible to non-gamers just picking up a controller for the first time and I think that is one of the things that made this one special, at least for me.

I'm 50 today. One of my fondest memories is my Dad waking me up at age 16 on Saturday mornings as he'd come into my room as I was sleeping and sit at my desk and play Zelda on my NES. When I'd wake, he'd look over at me and say "Hey son look what I discovered" and I'd wake and go sit beside him at my desk and listen with awe at what he'd tell me. Same with other games like Might n Magic and Ultima. Throat cancer took him from us in 2007 at age 56. I love your post Nexus9 it made me drift back in time as well.

@@Cynnister-vy5tl Thanks for the like and reply. My dad and I used to enjoy video games together as well. One of my earliest memories is he and I playing the original NES Castlevania together. We rented it from the local video store and we both loved the game and played it most of the night (or at least as late as I was allowed to stay up, lol). I have no idea why we didn't buy a copy but I was pretty young at that point so I'm sure they had their reasons, or maybe they figured a rental was enough, lol. We would take turns when our character died and we actually got pretty far, but never beat the game. Well they say it's not the destination but the journey right? I'm happy to say he is still around today and the last game we enjoyed together was taking turns at the Halo 4 campaign, lol. That was actually a fun night considering we were both of drinking age haha. Yeah cancer is what took my grandfather. It was really stupid actually because he had a work injury in his leg and they cut it out but it spread to his lung. Lets just say it was preventable if things had happened differently. I was very close to him so it hit me hard when he went so I know how you feel. Anyway, time to focus on the positive lol. We are in a retro revolution right now so its never been a better time to be a retro gamer.

Playing through the demo on the Switch version, the game plays a LOT like Nights and Billy Hatcher, because it involves two protagonists solving puzzles and defeating enemies in dream sequences with magical costumes that give players certain abilities. I like the "Pounding Pig" costume because it's a pun/reference to the saying "When pigs fly."

Let me just say that, unfortunately, the Switch version is not as good as the other ports. Compared to the other versions I saw, Balan Wonderworld has a slower frame rate on the Switch, with weird camera controls and characters who who randomly clip onscreen. It's frustrating because the cutscenes and music are really good. This game is going for $60 at launch. I don't want to play a version that buggy for that much money. So disappointing. 👎

I recently played Battle Arena Toshinden URA for Saturn. Having only played the Playstation games in the series before, this seemed almost like an "alternative universe" version of that game. Similar but oddly different. Regarding the series as a whole, I did play the first 3 games on PS1, but it quickly disappeared from people's conscious. By the end of the PS1 era, I don't think anyone were really looking back at it - having been completely demolished by other 3D fighting game franchises.

I'll admit I got Battle Arena Toshinden mostly for the visuals but I also had a lot of fun playing it on my PlayStation. The special moves and visual F/X that went along with them were unlike anything I had played at home before. And it was fine until the second wave of fighters arrived in late 1996. I remember a magazine had comparisons with the PS version and the recently released version in Japan which showed PS true transparencies vs. Saturn mesh. That and other articles with pixel peeping comparisons between the consoles pretty much made me switch to the newcomer Sony, even after I had been a loyal SMS and Genesis owner for years.

In the West it was almost always about graphics during this era. Gameplay always seemed secondary. It seemed to be about that WOW factor that drove sales. I'm trying to think of a 2D game not from an established franchise that did decently in sales. Sadly, none are coming to mind. Though this era isn't one I'm particularly nostalgic for. So I could be ABSOLUTELY wrong. I'd love to hear some things saying in wrong though. I lied. I think Mischief Makers did alright. But no others are coming to mind.

Toshinden on Playstation was just the effect of good marketing. Sony used it to help promote the launch of the Playstation. So when it came to Saturn, no one care by then. By then Tekken had come out on Playstation anyway. The comparison to Virtua Fighter while a bit disingenuous was somewhat legit because Virtua Fighter while claiming to be a 3D fighter, was still in 2D plane (so really a 2.5D fighter). But Toshinden actually went into the 3rd dimension by way of the dive roll evasion mechanic. So even VF1& 2 and Tekken 1&2 did not have that. It wasnt till the game designer of both of those games, Seichi Ishii, formed his own studio, DreamFactory, and created a true 3D fighter: Tobal #1 which had free 3D movement (not just dive rolls). Tekken would follow up with that with Tekken 3, while Virtua Fighter added a 3D evasion button in VF3 and then moved to full 3D in VF4. Of course Namco had Soul Blade for arcade/PS1 which has 8 way 3D movement. And Sony had Cardinal Syn a 3D weapon fighter.

Ironically. on CRT displays running a Composite signal (which is the best most "average" consumers had access to back then) the dithering actually looks fully transparent. Where the hoopla regarding "transparent this, transparent that" came from during that particular time remains a mystery. There was a LOT of anti-SEGA propaganda out there in the media, so certain narratives gained traction anyway.

One of the things I liked the most of this saga was that the players could make the special moves with a single button, making it easier to connect combos and the dodge button, that allowed the player to move in 3D. The magazine used to point that the PSX version had less polygons than the Saturn's Virtua Fighter but that it looked better due to the textures. It's a pity that this saga was forgotten like that, the first game had a key role for the initial success of the PSX.

Battle Arena Toshinden on original PlayStation was the first PlayStation game I played and I was blown away. I still think it's a very cool game as well as the second and third ones.

This was the game that sold me on the PSX. It wasn't the pretty graphics though, it was the dive rolling out of the way that sold me on this game. Side stepping didn't seem to be as unique to most fighters at this time and I thought it was very innovative. However, I'm more likely to pick up and play Virtua Fighter 2 today than BAT. It hasn't aged well and feels stiff in comparison to VF2. I'm glad Saturn got a port with more story which was sadly lacking from the PSX. I would love to see a comparison video on the DarkStalkers games for both sysyems, if one doesn't exist. Recently discovered your channel and been going through all your excellent reviews. Thank you for another great post, love your nostalgia channel!

This was actually a launch title for the Playstation in the U.S. It scratched an itch for a Street Fighter type game early in the 32 bit generation... I know Street Fighter the Movie was also out at that time (and I had it on the Saturn), it just didn't play as well to me, something was off about it.

I remember as well, since I had worked at Babbage’s at the time, Sony threw a lot of their marketing muscle behind this title. Sony played up on the edginess of the characters, especially Sofia. Sony’s PS1 launch marketing was brilliant. They really grabbed the late teen to mid 20’s market. To me, they really amped up their launch lineup and system as more than video games. BAT was marketing superbly as the time. Great video as always SLX! I had almost imported BATR when I first saw it. Glad I didn’t.

Nice overview my dude! This is gonna’ sound strange but I was more of a fan of BATTLE ARENA TOSHINDEN : URA on the Saturn than the original games. I realize that game is lambasted by the fans but I dunno’. It was brighter and faster in my opinion. Graphically I suppose it was just as bad as REMIX but I definitely had fun with URA back in the day. I also loved the old anime on VHS too! I always liked it when fighters went hand in hand with anime movies.

Great work, as usual. As a Sega fan, i really appreciate your efforts. It would be great to have a full review of Ura too, i think it deserves to be reconsidered. It's not a masterpiece, but it's way better than Remix.

This game made a lot of harm in Saturn's begining, it looked a lot worse than the Ps1 version, character models seems to be low-res, lack of transparencies, and no dynamic lighting effects on polygons, the ps1 really looked like an step up.

Do me a favour. Look at Kayin’s background on the PSX. Then look at the Saturn version. Notice the TV in the background is missing in the Saturn? Next, Gaia’s background. The 3-D rotational animation stays flat on the Saturn. All the voices are flat, too. Saturn does have a Tekken-like intro which is cool.

I like others really like this game when it was released. It was easy to see why it died off so quickly due to Tekken and Soul Blade. Man things were changing so fast back then in technology. I consider myself lucky to have been a young man back in those times.

I remember seeking this out for the PC published by Fujitsu. I still have it and a couple of other Fujitsu published games. So weird to see back then. I like the game for what it was, but the Saturn version definitely drops it down several notches.

When I was a kid, I remember playing an old demo of this game for PC. You could only pick the dominatrix lady, the generic japanese hero with a sword and... Earthworm Jim? It's so surreal to see what the full game looks like lol. I didn't remember the name (nor really made any effort to find out to be honest). I think I'll see if I can get a copy to play it again. It will be quite nostalgic.

It’s really hard to believe that Sega was the leader in 3D gaming in the arcades and made an underpowered 3D home system . And Sony . Who had no experience in 3D gaming . Made a superior 3D system

Sega made a big mistake not creating the Saturn hardware similar to the model 2 and 3 arcade boards or the PC 3D chip hardware in the mid 90s.
