Battle Of Britain
When France finally fell beneath the onslaught of Hitler's, war machine in June 1940, Britain awaited the full fury of the Nazi armies. She did not have long to wait; the Battle of Britain was about to begin. This programme tells the full story of those dark months in which Britain stood entirely alone against the might of the Luftwaffe.

Please fellows Britons, let us all take a moment to remember Sir Winston Churchill. For without him, capitulatation was the order of the war council. For without him America would never have been convinced to join the effort. For without him Europe would still be be drapped in swastikas. For without him the great British empire may have crumbled. We are eternally grateful. May Sir Winston never be forgotten for the rest if time. RIP our greatest Prime minister

Don't forget this "greatest prime minister" as 1st lord of the admiralty during ww1 was responsible for the appalling slaughter of ANZAC troops at Gallipoli during the Dardanelles campaign,he was also very quick to distance himself from Sir Arthur Harris and bomber command despite being an enthusiastic proponent of the campaign to destroy German cities,his treatment of Dowding after the battle of Britain was absolutely appalling,to me he was a disgusting waste of skin.

I LOVE the UNITED KINGDOM! I was born and raised an American. I have admired the people of Great Britain ever since I could read. I love the culture and the long, proud history of that great empire. When I was 18 years old I was serving with the United States Marines . I was thousands of miles from home fighting in a very unpopular war. The thing that mean’t the most to the men serving was the mail we would receive from home. It was a connection to home that helped us survive the insanity of war. I had a young lady I was engaged to and planned to marry when I returned. It wasn’t long after I got overseas thatI stopped receiving mail from her. Then one day I got a letter saying she was breaking up with me and getting married. I was crushed! About a month later at mail call I received a package the size of a shoe box. When I looked at the return address it was from London, U.K. I had to check the address to make sure it was my mail. It was mine. Since I didn’t know anyone in the U.K. I had no idea what it was or who it was from. WhenI opened it the box was full of greeting cards , drawings and notes wishing me well. The box had come from school children in London, U.K. I was stunned. What those children sent me was so overwhelming and kind. It restored my faith in people. What they did revived my lagging spirt and restored hope. I will never forget that act of kindness . I LOVE THE UNITED KINGDOM! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 I lost the box along with the return address. I was able to find how they got my name. The U.S. Marine Corps has a magazine called THE LEATHERNECK. The magazine has a section that encourages readers to be a PEN PAL. That’s where I think they got my Name and Unit.

Hello from the UK. "Polish Heroes saved Britain" Sorry but you're wrong. 145 Polish pilots having sought refuge in the UK then continued the fight against the nazi oppressors of THEIR country and made a small but valued contribution to the victory in the battle. It was Britain ALONE in Europe who actually saved Poland by continuing the opposition to nazism when utterly NO-ONE else in the world cared whether Poland existed or not. "they didn't let them join in the parade on the end". The turth is MAtalia that Poland was the ONLY country to receive TWO invites to the UK 1946 Victory Parade, but it was solely down to a poisonous bitter mix of POLISH political hatred and hubris that THEY CHOSE not to attend the Victory March. The Polish service personnel who fought on against nazism in the west were thanked by the UK by the passing of the 1947 Polish Resttlement Act, which provided full UK citizenship and residency rights for 250,000 Poles in the UK, after the USSR retained Poland within its "sphere of influence" after WW2. Have a listen to this gentleman, Victor Komarnicki, who flew with the RAF during WW2 as a bomber pilot with 300 (Polish) Sqd. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/od-apaqE2rmcgKM.html Notice if you will HIS account and FIRST HAND experience of how Poles were treated in the UK post WW2. A COMPLETELY different view that is a WORLD away from the treatment that many commenters in these threads portray. it is also "straight from the horse's mouth" so to speak.

Dowding was however well portrayed in the movie 'Battle of Britain', by Lawrence Olivier, and that could be his lasting claim to fame in the long term. I remember as a boy staying with my grandad (wing commander Geoffrey Cole RAF ret'd) in Folkestone Kent seeing the flight of 3 ,Heinkel 111s overflying the White cliffs of Dover during the film making. They were on loan from the Spanish air force, as were the (re-engined) Me 109s also shown in that excellent film

Very interesting documentary - I had not previously heard in other documentaries about the background political wranglings going on, and the jealousy concerning Park and Dowding. Whilst the RAF's fending off of the Luftwaffe and preventing the invasion of Britain makes me proud to be British, the fact that those directly responsible for that achievement were not given their due recognition is frustrating and frankly shameful.

Adrian, Thanks for bringing up this issue. To your credit, I will reiterate your clarification in slightly different words. The incorrect use of German words are a few seconds after the 1:11 mark and 2:28 mark in this video. It occurs in many books and documentaries from various sources. The problem started when non-German speaking authors used the word "Wehrmacht" when they should have used the word "Heer". The mistake of using the word "Wehrmacht" when intending to use the word "Heer" carried on from generation to generation. The regular army (not including the Waffen SS) of Germany throughout the Second World War was the Heer (not the Wehrmacht). The regular navy (and only navy) of Germany throughout the Second World War was the Kriegsmarine (not the Wehrmacht). The regular air force of Germany throughout the Second World War was the Luftwaffe (not the Wehrmacht). When a person wants to refer to the Heer, Kriegsmarine, and Luftwaffe (all three) at the same time, then that person should use the word Wehrmacht (English translation: armed forces of Germany 1935 - 1945). At the 1:15 mark and 2:32 mark, the narration should be "Heer and Luftwaffe" (not "Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe" which is redundant). These German words, which literally translate to the English words as given here, should not be arranged as follows: the Wehrmacht (army, navy, and air force), and Luftwaffe (air force) ...

The equal of the 109? Hmmm..... The Spitfire had 13 seconds of ammunition. The 109 could fire its machine guns for 55 seconds, Secondly, the 109's cannons could fire armour-piercing shells - it had considerably more firepower than the Spitfire. Thirdly, the 109's engine had direct fuel injection. The Merlin use carburetters. These were prone to flooding the engine, causing the plane to stall. The 109 could out dive and out climb the Spitfire and, in the right hands of an experienced pilot, out turn the Spitfire too. Incidentally, all of the 109's superior qualities - the use of cannons and fuel injection, were all later incorporated into the Spitfire
@jamest5014
@jamest5014 3 жыл бұрын
True, the 109's had great weaponry qualities but the spitfire was ultimately more manoeuvrable (in the hands of equal piolets), also whilst the Merlin engines were slightly flawed they were incredibly powerful and often had the upper hand in speed, so it is fair to say that whilst both had flaws, they were fairly equal in speed, turning etc. which is ultimately the most important factor

According to historian James Holland, the big wing was a disastrous idea. For a start, it would take ages for all the aircraft to meet in one place. It is a myth that Britain stood entirely alone against the Luftwaffe - good propaganda but somewhat lacking in accuracy. By the RAF’s own statistics, about 20% of the pilots who took part in the Battle of Britain came from 13 countries other than Britain (595 out of 2,937). For example, there were so many Poles and Czechs that each nationality had two of its own squadrons within the RAF, as well as men scattered throughout other British squadrons. Canada transferred an entire squadron of its own air force-complete with planes-for Britain’s defense, but several other Dominions contributed valuable manpower. New Zealand sent more pilots (127) than any other Dominion, followed by Canada (113), South Africa (25), and Australia (32). The Irish contributed 10 pilots, and there were even 3 pilots from Rhodesia, 1 from Jamaica, and 1 from Barbados. Many of the Commonwealth pilots were utilised in leadership and training positions. Sir Keith Park (a New Zealander) took command of No. 11 Group, responsible for the fighter defence of London and southeast England, taking the brunt of the Luftwaffe's air attacks. The famous Polish 303 Squadron was initially commanded by Johnny Kent, a Canadian, and another Canadian, “Butch” Barton, took charge of 249 Squadron. The heroism and courage of the all the pilots who flew for the RAF during the battle was extraordinary, but Britain’s “lone” stand against Nazi oppression was crucially aided by hundreds of citizens from many other countries as well.

What was the Battle of Britain a part of ? Of a much larger "war" that was brought to attention in the Bible, at Revelation 6, whereby it foretold of nationalism and warfare reaching new heights, bringing death and destruction on a level never seen before in history, and is called "The Ride of the Four Horsemen". With the turn of the 20th century, the airplane was invented by the Wright brothers in 1903, that was further developed to do deadly damage from the skies. And later inventions, such as the tank that was invented by the British in 1915 during World War I in response to trench warfare, increased explosiveness of bombs, battleships and the machine gun, became the mainstay that increased the number of deaths exponentially. With the outbreak of World War I on July 28, 1914, the ride of the four horsemen were well on their way, with the rider on "the white horse", Jesus Christ already being given a "crown" to a heavenly government called God's Kingdom just before the advent of World War I so that "he went out conquering and to complete his conquest".(Rev 6:1, 2) His first conquest as king of God's Kingdom was to cast "the dragon" and his angels out of heaven, whom they had access to until this "war" erupted between Jesus (or Michael) and his angels and "the dragon" or Satan the Devil and his angels. This war was between two opposing forces, one with Jesus that God backed, while Satan was diametrically opposite, with him and his demonic angels being violently forced against their will and cast down to the earth (Rev 12:7-9), so that this brought "woe for the earth (or seemingly stable elements of mankind) and for the sea (or restless masses of mankind, always in a state of agitation), because the Devil has come down to you, having great anger, knowing that he has a short period of time.”(Rev 12:12; Note: God's personal name is Jehovah, Isa 26:4; also Note: two opposing organizations began almost 6,000 years earlier in the garden of Eden, between "the woman's offspring" and "the serpent's offspring", when Satan rebelled against God's rightful rulership, Gen 3:15) Thus, with the sudden occurrence of World War I in 1914, the world entered into a new era, an era whereby warfare would play a prominent role in human history. Just 21 years after the end of World War I in 1918, Adolf Hitler launched his "blitzkrieg" on Poland in September, 1939, that began World War II, costing the lives of an estimated 60 million + soldiers and civilians.(Note: World War I cost an estimated 21 million lives) At Revelation 6:3, 4, it says that immediately after Jesus as the rider on the "white horse" was "given a crown", that another rider on a "fiery-colored horse" came forth, so that "it was granted to the one seated on it to take peace away from the earth so that they should SLAUGHTER one another, and he was given a great sword." This proved more true that anyone could ever have imagined, for over the course of the 20th century, it has been estimated that human warfare has cost 110 million lives, 3 times the number lost during the previous 19 centuries combined. Soon, "the Ride of the Four Horsemen" will be completed, at what is described as "the war of the great day of God the Almighty", called Armageddon.(Rev 16:14, 16) World War I was called "the war to end all wars" (which it failed in doing), but it is Armageddon, a world situation between "the kings (or political leaders and their supporters) of the earth and God's Kingdom, that will accomplish this (whereby the political system is crushed out of existence, Dan 2:44), so that a "thousand years" era of peace will ensue (Rev 20:4-6), and whereby God's Kingdom will see to it that the earth is transformed into a paradise for "meek" ones as their "inheritance" forever (Ps 37:11, 29), just as Jehovah God originally purposed when he created Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, and of which Jesus taught genuine Christians to pray for.(Matt 6:9, 10)

@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 TR: DL (too long; did not read) The vast majority of people give just a personal opinion on a subject, rather than providing serious details that can completely change another person's view on the matter. It is as stated at Proverbs 18: "A stupid person takes no pleasure in understanding (through serious research and reading); He would rather disclose what is in his heart (or give just an off-the-cuff personal opinion that has no more weight than the next person)."(Prov 18:2) Those who delve into critical analytical fields, like engineering, medical, automotive, astronomy, etc, realize the need to read extensively in order to "dig out the nuggets" of relevant information, that can make the difference between "life and death". But most people are unwilling to look into a matter with any real intent, but see life with a light-hearted, casual approach. What was written concerning the political governments who are described as a composite "wild beast" at Revelation 13 that are under Satan's thumb, is so true, for look what is happening in Afghanistan, or look at world history, that "salvation by humans is worthless".(Ps 60:11) I will not say any more, since TR: DL is your desire, but for those who are searching for the truth about life, where we came from, why the earth is so well designed for life, what the future holds, will remain elusive for such ones.

@@timhaley3459 You maybe right.... people looking to find military history programs may indeed unexpectedly "see the light" from an overlong, though heartfelt exposition such as your OP.

@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 When four of Jesus apostles asked Jesus a composite question at Matthew 24:3, they received, not a short answer, but one whereby Jesus delved into critical details that covered 2 complete chapters of Matthew 24 and 25. In giving his response to their question, he outlined details that would otherwise have not been revealed, such as that his invisible "presence" would be like "the days of Noah" that covered over a century of time and that the vast majority of people would be busy with the mundane affairs of life, marrying, having a family, eating and drinking, but "taking no note" of the impending global deluge that was upcoming.(Matt 24:37-39) So, Jesus gave intimate details that helps sincere people to make a sound decision, so they can have the hope of living through the upcoming "great tribulation" (Matt 24:21, that is two phased) and enter into 1,000 years of Jesus Millennial reign (Rev 20:4-6), in which the three pillars of wicked human society (1) the religions of the world called Babylon the Great, Rev 17:5 (2) the political system called "a wild beast", and (3) the greedy commercial system called "the merchants of the earth", Rev 18:11, will be annihilated.(Jer 25:31-33; Dan 2:44; Rev 19:11-21) Thus, with a little extra effort or reading, a person can find what is "the truth", while most will be content with the present "status quo", and think that this is just the way human society will always be, corrupt. In conclusion, Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, said this about our time frame: "First of all know this, that in the last days (or from 1914 till Armageddon, "the war of the great day of God the Almighty", Rev 16:14, 16) ridiculers will come with their ridicule, proceeding according to their own desires and saying: “Where is this promised presence of his ? Why, from the day our forefathers fell asleep in death, all things are continuing exactly as they were from creation’s beginning.”(2 Pet 3:3, 4)
