Fun fact: the +40k French encircled at 0:24 were trapped in the city of Lille. They held for 3 days against 160 000 men and 800 tanks until they were out of ammo and had to surrender. They were given the Honours of War by the Germans, one of the weirdest pictures of World War II being French troops parading, wearing arms, while German troops and officers salute in the background. This was when they were granted the Honours of War. Other fun fact: the last time Germany granted the Honours of War was... also to the French, at Fort de Vaux, in World War 1.

Fun Fact...Hitler did not want war with the British. Ribbentropp and Hitler did everything to avoid war with the British. Hitler only started bombing London after Churchill bombed German cities and targeted German civilians indiscriminately. The reason for the entire war and the destruction of Europe is because Chamberlain handed out defense guarantees to a list of European nations after he heard Germany was going to invade Romania...a nation it didn't even border!

A lot of this could have been avoided had Gamelin not sent his operational reserves to the Netherlands, those forces were desperately needed to cut off the German spear head through the Ardennes. Nevertheless the French army did a great job in holding off the Germans and covering the British withdrawal from France.
@penguin3540
@penguin3540 9 ай бұрын
The French army thought the Ardennes was impossible to break through, and for the most part it was. That area was heavily wooded forest with massive hills. It’s still an insane endeavor for 50 divisions mainly comprised of tanks to cross that. You can’t really blame the Allies for not fortifying that. They also didn’t have many tank divisions. The French had opted for tanks spread out between their infantry divisions and only had 3 concentrated tank divisions and 1 motorized division. The Germans had more than 10 tank and motorized divisions as they didn’t spread out the tanks as much.

At some point a French General would of said to a British General, We'll help you leave, just make sure you return in force. Entente Cordiale. Many lives were lost to ensure this did happen and that European nations once again regained their independence to make and chose there own decisions. NATO was formed to make sure this independence of states remained, and states joined willingly. The USSR did not and was a governed by Russia. Facts matter.

I'm not sure if this is mythologized somewhat but I've read that german soldiers were issued a huge amount of a new pharmaceutical drug (today we call it meth), to help them stay awake and alert for the insane Ardene Blitz which is how all these allied forces got cut off in the first place. Part of the reason the Dunkirk evacuation worked was because the germans were coming down from about a week of meth and not sleeping. When people think of the german blitz they think of Panzers and the Luftwaffe but pharmaceuticals were part of it too.

Who is the traitor ? The one who gave the order for British troops to withdraw to Dunkirk without warning his allies ? Or the one presented with a fait accompli ? The Belgians had practically exhausted all available means of resistance but the Belgians had held on after British withdrawals.

@@aetrods6473 BEF ended evacuation on 3 june. Belgians capitulated on 28 of May. On begining of Dynamo operation. Also, it was aginst Belgian goverment and was a breech of constituion. And at 1914 more of Belgium was ocupied than in moment of capitulation. And then his father stand aginst Germans. But his son was fan of Hitler. So he didn't wanted to fight him.

@@Englishman-_-Mongolia2022 On the long term, UK and specifically Churchill's will, were strategically decisive (Halifax would have compromised). But during the first half of the war, bilateral treaties to strengthen Germany against France, or refusing to support French proposal to defend Czechoslovakia, or successive glorious evacuations from Norway, France and Greece did not make UK a very trustworthy ally. De Gaulle summed it up :"Nations do not have friends, they have interests".
