During the battle for Kiev, the encircled troops of the Southwestern Front of General Kirponos suffered one of the heaviest defeats of the first year of the Great Patriotic War. There were more than 450 thousand Red Army soldiers in the boiler. Nevertheless, the Soviet troops fought bravely, inflicted considerable losses on the German tank groups of Guderian and Kleist, and most importantly gained time by delaying the start of Operation Typhoon at a later date.
