BATTLE OF THE 37s - BACHMANN v ACCURASCALE
After a year or so of ordering, the Accurascale 37402 has arrived. Is it any good? Does it run well? How does it compare to the Bachmann? What does it sound like? So many questions… Take a look into my comparison / review of the Accurascale class 37 in large logo livery, enjoy.

Morning John, glad you're happy with the running now, it's such a shame these things aren't tested fully at manufacture, not everyone is as capable or as diligent as you, so I can see a lot of disappointed modelers out there. I do admire your ability to work through these problems and indeed have the means of printing parts to gain a satisfactory resolution. I know your picadilly line is your first love, but I really do love this 00 layout, I like the idea of a slightly run down station on a main line, and now you can continuously run ,for me it's the ultimate in enjoyment. Thanks for all you do your extremely skillfull and the information you put out there is helpful, it all helps make a difference to a fantastic hobby. You take care looking forward to the next one on either layout, Eddy xx

Thanks Eddie, you are right the issues I experienced anyone could experience. I seen a few people disappointed their model was less than satisfactory. Gratefully I was able to solve the issue to a positive conclusion. Thank you for your continued support and yes the N gauge will always be the main event, but felt I was missing out on the goodies in OO. N gauge will always be the poorer sibling due to its sheer size and space inside each vehicle.

Thank you for this. I am on the verge of returning to railway modelling and frankly I find this review worrying. The idea that I might spend that amount of money on a model and then find that it derails going over it’s first set of points seems ridiculous. I have seen a number of videos about these class 37s and for the most part they are off putting. Your review is very thorough and includes some minor issues that probably would not bother me too much, such as time delay in switching lights, but derailing on points or 2nd radius curves is completely out of order. At least you didn’t have a problem with the actual motor on the Accurascale model, which several other channels have done. Thanks for posting this thorough review.

Hi, I do understand that’s why we post such videos so any prospective buyer has some idea of what they ‘could’ expect. No model is perfect on every example made and issues do occur. The technology going into models now is phenomenal and this can lead to issues also. Hornby’s railroad range maybe a solution which gives a simpler locomotive using older technology and tooling, but the body side detail can be lacking with many parts moulded rather separately fitted. Modelling N gauge too, again none are perfect but there seems to be a greater reliability rate than OO.

One difference between 402 and 430 is the era, 402 is modern DRS, with LED style lighting and the multiple working socket, whereas 430 is BR era, with no kickplate like the BR prototypes, and the tail lights are the older style, I have an accurascale one and it is brilliant, but its interesting to see the differences, I think the accurascale is better as the snowploughs are outstanding and I much prefer the magnetic roof on the Accurascale for easy DCC fitment

On a fresh painted loco the fan room bracings below the fan would be grey and would get black over time as that area of the loco gets grubby over time . Fitting snowploughs to 37's were a right pain. Most had to be custom built to the loco as the pipe were not always in the same position if switched around with another 37. Good to see that they have reg air pipes fitted on the buffer beam. These are for multi working and are painted white, with 0 to 50 psi of air in them . 50 psi being full engine revs. The middle plough was held by two pins and the outers were bolted to the frame four bolts per side. We encountered a lot of plough damage due to them hitting certain types of buffer stops. The outer ploughs were also adjustable via a screw. These models are very good . All we need now it smoke and they would be perfect

The reason 430 hast got some details that 402 has eg ploughs, kick plates, eth socket in the nose, is because 430 is a modelled as she was in the 80s and 402 is modelled in her current form under drs ownership so she will have more up to date features that a 1980s 37 wouldn’t have.

Hi John. That was one excellent review! My opinoion kept swinging one way or the other through out the entire video. My first impression and something that you didn't mention was the paintwork. 430 semmed to be more of a Network Southeast blue where as 402 seemed to be more accurate. Lighting, yes it is clear that Bachmnn holds that one as it does with the sound chips etc. I have to admit though that I have a bias to 430 as I knew it well when we had it at the Llangollen railway. It arrived in dutch livery with snow plows before being repainted into BR blue and numbered 6430 :) At the endof the day I would prefer the Bachman model but Accurascale are producing some very fine models these days and as you say, it is very close. I'm surprised that t402 came with the NEM pocket issue though. I'm unsure how that got through the QA process! Anyway, thank you again for this video. I found it to be very insiteful :) Cheers Mav

Hi Mav, I was the same flitting from one to the other. I know the Bachmann version quite well now, its successes and fails, but as you say the snowplough issue for me was not something small to be over looked. Derailing on long radius points is something Ive not seen before with any loco. Even the Bachman’s derailments was caused by stray solder on the track. (Quickly dealt with and problem solved). Thank you for watching.

Great comparison, I only have the Accurascale 37's so interesting to see how good the newly tooled Bachmann's are. With the Accurascale ploughs, the nem pocket needs to be removed and it will then run with ploughs and hoses without derailing on curves. I agree some of the holes need a bit of drilling to better fit the hoses, but worth it to get the "look"

Hi, I agree, thats why I included this in my opening shots. Im not connected with them in any way. There is a chat facility on their website at the bottom of the page under ‘contact us’. Richard Watson from New Junction works for Accurascale. I am fairly certain he will be keeping an eye on YT videos about their models, hopefully the packaging message will get through. I also received some nuclear flask wagons to run with this 37. One of my NEM pockets broke off. I did manage to swap couplings over so that the absent one was at the back of the train. All sorted. Yes the Bachmann 37 does need a new speaker, neither model is perfect (yet). It comes down to personal choice.

Fabulous review, i have the Bachmann 37 from 2005 I've only just decided to fit the snowploughs at both ends . I think Bachmans idea of having the snowplough in 3 pieces is better as i simply left the central part off allowing for the coupler . I also had to snip off a very small amount of vacuum hose at the number 1 end allowing for the central part off the snowplough . This may be different on the latest model 🙂

Hi, the snow plough on this new release sadly didnt come in three parts, only the one piece NEM pocket style. This unit sits far to far forward and looks odd, but this also means I could not fit the coupling and a snowplough. However, if you look at part 2 of the Caroline project, on my channel, I renumber this loco, but used the accurascale 3 part coupling, and make my own snowplough / magnetic coupling combo. This works a treat...

Excellent review. I to own both locos, and I have to say it's the Bachmann all the way for me. It feels like their model has evolved and is much more sorted, whereas the Accurascale is the new kid on the block and it's not quite sure what it's trying to do. The Accurascale is incredibly detailed but this appears to be at expense of quality. It's definitely no SLW Class 24. Those roof hatch hinges and the like actually spoil the model more than enhance it. Lots of tiny niggles but they all add up to be very frustrating. The Bachmann sound version has all the right sounds and functions and they perform brilliantly. The Accurascale has best engine sound but other sounds/functions are poor, the marker lights are extra poor, and as you say the lighting functions are frustratingly slow...cab, head and tail lights. My Acc arrived with chipped paint, missing a lamp iron.....and big finger print on the glazing. Faults can be sorted but it's just a nuisance...it's not like it's the first time I've had problems with Accurascale products!

One of my 2 Bachmann does however de-rail from time to time…… and it has the snowplough fitted. The other Bachmann without runs fine 🤔. Happy with all my 37’s to be honest think my Accurascale pips it purely because it is sound fitted 👍

Thank you, I think its good to put up each next to each other, yes both are amazing. Both also have short comings. My Accurascale 37 rans beautifully without snowploughs. 7/10 any derailing usually comes down to couplings and their affect on things around them. Ie bogies, other couplings and vehicles not forgetting added detail. Its up to you clearly if you fit the snowplough, but the look is definitely worth the effort.

It’s hard to say who wins. I only have the older Bachmann 37 (which is still great), and both of these are clearly ahead of these new ones, however that comes at a price, and due to price differences, I’d actually have to say I prefer the Accurascale model, as both are extremely good, and it is almost impossible to pick between the two of them, however, I am on a bit of a budget, so considering that the price difference between the two models (sound fitted/analog, not the deluxe Bachmann one) is about £40, that automatically makes Accurascale win since both models are equally as good for the most part. On the other hand, it does suck that you can’t do the cold start with the Accurascale one, as that is a feature that I value, and it did seem as if the solution for fitting the plows was not that well thought out on Accurascale’s, even though it was three pieces instead of one. I also think that many parts on the Accurascale one are finer scale, but at the end of the day, pricing is important to me, and if two models are both close to, if not equally as good, I will always go for the cheaper option.
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 7 ай бұрын
Yes I do understand that and both companies clearly have a budget for each model. I spoke to Accurascale at GETS regarding the cold start and their 37 was recorded in Summer and had been pre-run that day, so the engine was already warm. The cold start sequence was not available. Nothing sinister or misleading. They did say IF they were able to record the cold start, they would reblow peoples’ decoders. Having had both models for a while now I still maintain the Bachmann as is appears to be a more robust model, the Accurascale has had parts fall off, issues with the sound, lights are still VERY dim. I don’t feel as confident to run it for long without something happening. Although Accurascale need to be applauded (I told them this) for producing a model that is, at least, equal to the market leader, some achievement!

Should they both be the same colour blue/bluey green or not?
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 11 ай бұрын
Well… ideally yes the same, but back in the 70s their were slight variants on shade, but nowadays. On the layout you don’t really notice the difference.

Biggest difference on mine, is the front is very yellow on my Accurascale and very orange on my Bachmann, totally different colours. Bachmann wins, as it has operating roof fans.

Hi, yes I’ve noticed the Bachman is ever so slightly darker on all colours, you can see this in the video with the side by side shots. The camera does seem to emphasise such things. However, for me, it’s not obvious in reality. Of course back in the 70s/80s and 90s depot differences were common place, not so now though.

I might be wrong but I think Accurascale might have plans to allow customers to retrofit a working fan at a later date. Then this feature might well be included as standard on future batch releases....Nowt wrong with bachmann, got quite a few. Their windows are the biggest issue for me. They make a crisply finished loco then stick silly prism effect lenses in the window frames. 😂

Your comparison included everything but the price. Bachmann are way too expensive by comparison
@piccadillymodelrailways
@piccadillymodelrailways 10 ай бұрын
The price can vary depending on where you go, the choice to buy or not is yours. I did mention Bachman is more expensive but I don’t like stating prices for someone to watch the video in a year and the prices are very different. Thank you for watching

Big difference I notice is the Bachmann's body seems a lot deeper, very noticeable at the yellow section at the front. Not sure which is correct

The machmann nose is a separate part, which leads to a seam where it joins and a slightly too long nose

You can fix the duration it takes to turn on with cv or if you have an ESU lokprogrammer that would do the job easy, but you shouldn’t have to do that out of the box, should be done at the factory

Hi, with Accurascale’s help I did manage to get it a bit brighter, nowhere near bright enough. If remembering correctly, you need to change CVs 31/32 to 16 & 0 then its balancing 262 and 318. I need to play around a bit more. If you know the CV values please say.

BACHMANN All day long.. So many issues with Accurascale.. Sent 2 back and 2 others will be expensive paperweights.. Accurascale were total ASSES and I ended up cancelling over £5500.00 of pre-orders, of which over £4000.00 were pre-paid.. Got my money back.. Motors stop, sound won't turn off and sound hunts.... NOT WORTH THE MONEY...

Sorry you had so many issues, I think you have been very unfortunate. I spoke to Accurascale at GETS and they are aware of the issues, and will endevour to improve on them for future releases, although that doesn't help yourself. Least you got your money back.

Yet again, issues with the NEM socket. I have banged my head against the wall repeatedly over this, an NEM socket IS MEANT TO BE SET TO A STANDARD !!! and as yet, very few British Outline models meet this. and, until they do realise that it's an international standard, and should be adhered to, then this issue will persist.... get it RIGHT FFS

Hi, Perhaps you should address this with Accurascale, I only bought one of their models, had issues and found a solution. I did chat with Accurascale about and they said they would refer it to the designer/engineer, who was on holiday at the time. However, if you feel really strongly about this you should chat with them yourself.
