Ice Hockey is one of the few sports in the world that I enjoy watching & I would like to state that the PC version of NHL 98 is one of the best Ice Hockey games ever made. So naturally I had high hopes for the two main console versions of the game... I was disappointed. Not to say they're bad ports though, the PS1 game maintains the look & feel of the PC version but lacks a lot of the presentation. The Saturn port makes a good effort but the same problems that were in most EA ports are present.

best NHL game intro ever. i smashed my printer against the wall and beat my chest after watching that.

You're right. Most of the titles the Saturn is appreciated for now were not the hot titles back then.

As this might be the biggest reason, why EA never made any games for Dreamcast, and why they should have never made any games for the Saturn, mainly because of the ultra-difficult programming of games on the system.

I've noticed this game and Need for Speed both have the Dolbe Surround logo on the PS1's version of the games. Was there royalty fee or something that Sega didn't buy or share? I notice this because I was always a "sound" guy and loved to hear games in stereo. So getting to hear games in surround sound (pro-logic) was a thrill to me. Even some rare SNES games had D-Surround.

EA has yet to understand Madden or actual Football...what makes you think they will understand another companies console.

It's still very playable though & there is fun to be had despite the poor textures, low detail & dodgy frame rate. Also it looks much better then the Saturn port of NHL 97 did so I guess that's something.

EA NEVER UNDERSTOOD SATURN

Nothing wrong with the old vid. I was commenting on the fact that my comment is a year old, not the video. I'd gladly take a chuggy framerate and sound glitches if it means the game is playable (not that I'd want to play any RR than the Genesis ones). As for the 2D fighting games and shmups. That's like, your opinion man. ;) I love shmups but they're extremely expensive, especially on the Saturn. Couldn't care less about fighting games. I bought a Saturn for the Sega games.

Yeah I was very disappointed by this Sega port at the time. It's 2x as good on the Playstation. PP 96 and All-Star Hockey 98 are the way to go on Saturn.

Lol! The intro is only a little dramatic.

You just don't buy a Saturn to play EA games. Or really any 3rd party games. You buy a Saturn for Sega games, and 2d games. That was as true back then as it is now ^.^

If it isn't NHL 98, why does the title say NHL 98, and why are there EA Sports logos all over the arenas?

when EA sport had nothing to care about Saturn's owners. thx Sega Sport save the hockey games on sega's 32 bits!

You do realize that post was made a year ago? Anyways, Road Rash had terrible collision detection on the Saturn, and wonky controls. I hardly see how it's "superior"
@FastTquick12 жыл бұрын
The Saturn port simply looks insulting. Granted it's pretty much what you expect from the 32-bit machines and like you said, it's better than NHL 97, but compared to the PSX and PC games, it's a disaster on so many levels. Like RJTamm93 said, you buy a Saturn for games like Virtua Fighter 2 and Panzer Dragoon, not NHL 98.

Treasure or capcom were good third party companies (maybe the only good lol)

wow. this almost looks unplayable on the saturn. first one of the side by sides i see a hard victory for the PS1.

Oy, vey. The Saturn version just looks sloppy. We have a very choppy frame rate, very chunky players who appear to be wielding clubs, a very rough looking stadium, and complete lack of polish all around. Definitely follows NBA Live 98 as the worst of that year's EA Sports lineup on Saturn, while FIFA 98 and Madden 98 were the good ones. Honestly, EA should have simply updated the players and teams on NHL 94 and put that on Saturn. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Overall, I'm giving this game a STRONG PSX. It's an easy win for Sony.
