I remember playing the cabinet in the wild in the 2010s at the local flea market. The owner of the cabinet was a fly-by-night vendor and selling the cabinet for $800. It's a decent shump.

BOTP is something I look forward to every week! I was not familiar with Moon Cresta until very recently, playing it on an emulated compellation cabinet. It has some interesting ideas and I'm sure that when it was released against the other arcade shooters of its time, it was something else.

I remember playing the arcade cabinet on many holidays when I was younger. But for some reason I didn't actually learn the name of the game until well into MAME's popularity and I decided to search it out. I still play it regularly to this day it's probably my favourite classic space shooter. I love the 'stackable' ship gimmick!

This game!!!! This wonderful game!!! When I was 7, 8 yrs old, I would go to a bar, on my school vacations, and I would play this game a lot. The pattern of the enemies was very weird, and, they would take me out in a matter of minutes. I used to spend a lot in this game, in that bar, on my vacations. The other games I would play were: Phoenix and Pleiades. Have you covered them already ? Well, to shorten the story, when I got hold on the PS1 Nichibutsu classics, I got so :DDDDDDDDD Smile from ear to ear. I guess it was the arcade machine emulated. Well sir, you made this old man very happy. Keep up the good work!

This somewhat obscure old arcade game will always have rent in my brain because it was the first video game I ever played. Way, way back when I was barely forming permanent memories. I played it maybe three times in total, and got to the final stage at least once, though I'm pretty sure I never looped it. A pretty big deal, since I rarely played video games as a kid, and can honestly list all of them without running out of fingers. The reason I was attracted to this particular game? Believe it or not, it was the little "jingle" that plays when you shoot the enemies on waves 5 and 6. It is vaguely musical, and the chords really stuck with me. Now, imagine my surprise when they released "Sol Cresta" a year or two ago-a literal sequel to my private childhood history. It even features a soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro. I was essentially obliged to buy that game.

This was the 1st arcade game that I became obsessed with at 9 yrs old. Gumbas Pizzeria in Cupertino CA had the arcade machine, and my family would go there every Friday night for dinner. Later, the 7-11 down the street got the arcade Vanguard, which was my next obsession. I didn't get a home console (2600) until mid 1983, after constantly badgering my parents 😂 Great times! There was something magical about growing up in Silicon Valley in the 70s & 80s. Definitely not the same anymore!

Nice. Another vintage game I got to try out in the 80's in the local bowling alley. Moon Cresta is both an enjoyable and equally frustrating game. With the wonky enemy movements combined with the limited player maneuverability, surviving long enough to have all three sections of the ship stacked is quite the accomplishment. I have the SFC cart as well as being able to play the PS1 port. Haven't tried any of the others. The meteor speed on the C64 port has to be a programing error. That looks like it makes it pretty much unplayable.

This brings back memories of playing this in the arcades - loved it. There’s another 80s arcade game I’ve been trying to remember that could be a Nichibutsu game where the space ships dropped enemies that would land on the bottom and tried prod you from underneath with sharp spikes as they walked about. Anyone know of this?

Another great episode, Mark. I don't have any nostalgia for Moon Cresta, since I didn't play the arcade machine (well, in the 80s: I've played a moon cresta cab more recently) nor owned any of the home ports. Looks quite typical for a game of this time period, though the ships scaling into the foreground is more advanced than a lot of games did back then. It reminds me of Galaga a bit, but with more irritating sound effects. Weirdly enough, none of the versions seem to match the arcade enemy movements exactly, as even the Playstation version seems a bit faster. Though, that's assuming MAME is even emulating the arcade speed with 100% accuracy. This isn't the type of game that can keep my interest, but if I was around back in 1980, I'd probably view it much more optimistically.
@RetroCore
