Mr. Heli is one of the best games ever released for the Amstrad CPC. Scrolling, fast gameplay, music in game and close to arcade graphics and color. A true example of what the CPC could do. I remember when I first got it back then, I was impressed so much! And I even had a green screen lol!

This brings back memories. I remember playing this on a PC Engine in the late 80s and it blew my mind. I was used to playing NES and C64 so the fact you could play something this epic at home melted my brain. I remember being so jealous! I've always wanted to play this again, I had no idea it was on the C64!

Ah, man. I didn't know this had an Amiga port. If only it existed on the Sega Genesis, I might have played it bitd. I love the look of that Amstrad port. I love the vibrant colors and especially the stout design of the characters, enemies, and turrets. It chibi-fies of SD-izes this game even further. It reminds me of some of the design choices developers made when porting games to the GBC, although the color in the Amstrad is much more vibrant.

I'm kinda relieved to see that the bad ports on Atari and Amiga were also handled by Probe, because after the C64 and Amstrad CPC versions I would have been mislead into thinking that Probe were actually top notch developpers. lol And I love the C64, hardware sprites and scrolling really put it above other home computers (mostly western, but also japanese like the MSX) of its time for gaming. I wish it had been popular in Japan, I can only imagine what great games and ports we would have seen with that system in the hands of competent studios.

How'd you get infinite energy for some of these ports? I'm thinking of trying to rip sprites or background stuff, and that could be mighty helpful for getting to the things want to rip; particularly for the TG16 and C64 ports, as I think that's the versions I can mess with most easily.

The Atari ST was not designed as a gaming computer but as a cheap but versatile office computer or workstation with audio and video capabilities. So a smooth scrolling, sprites or a good frame rate were out of its reach. The best developers (eg. Thalion) managed to achieve them anyways.
@amerigocosta7452
@amerigocosta7452 6 жыл бұрын
The C64 version looks so console like because its frame rate is up to console standards, something not so easy to achieve with the other home computers. Probe software used to do well with 8-bit computers, much less so with Amiga and ST. Too bad no matter what version you play this game is incredibly difficult and frustrating!

Wow, the CPC version is really cool! Funny how it was coded by the same guy who made the ST and Amiga versions, but then it starts looking like the Spectrum one... and then its actually a great version, better than the 16 bits ones! The Amiga version of course is just a lazy ST port. It runs smoother, ok, but its still lazy as hell. That could be running at 50/60 fps on Amiga easily, if it was coded properly to use its hardware. Also, I wonder why all those ports chose to leave the background black instead of blue at level 1. It makes no sense, blue looks more alive and nice for this kind of game.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 6 жыл бұрын
Ah, the black background came from the ST version which could only use 16 colours. Using blue was not an option apparently so they went with black.
@rafaellima83
@rafaellima83 6 жыл бұрын
****ing atari ST screwing up everyone else :D I think then went with black because most enemies are blue, and they they would need one more shade of blue just for the background. With black background they can use the same black for everything :) It really kills me to see the Amiga version running so choppy just because it's an ST port. This could be done using the Dual Playfield + HW sprites + Blitter scrolling on Amiga and the game would fly. But you are probably tired to see me ranting about the same thing over and over everytime Amiga and ST port appear together :D
@rafaellima83
@rafaellima83 6 жыл бұрын
Actually just noticed the CPC version is not really coded by the same guy who made the 16 bits versions. It just uses the same loading screen, which shows "Code: Jim Baguley" But then the title screen shows "Code: A R Lill" which is the same guy who did the Spectrum version. Confusing and screwed up as hell :D This kind of stuff is hilariously bad. The Amiga version of Shaq Fu* uses the same title screen of the Mega-Drive version, up to the "Licensed by Sega Enterprises" text even though obviously the Amiga version had nothing to do with Sega. * It's a SHAME Shaq Fu isn't an arcade game, because it would be awesome seeing you going through the pain of reviewing all of its versions, hahaha :D

I think that was the last of the games I requested. Mr. Heli is a fantastic game, sadly aside from the PC Engine version the ports make some massive compromises. Stripping the soundtrack down to just the opening track is a crime when tracks have been composed to match each particular section and evoke a particular mood. Confronting a boss with the jaunty opening stage theme playing is just wrong. Somebody actually made a hack of the Spectrum version called Mr. Heli mod that's more like the Amstrad version and includes the same soundtrack, there's footage on KZfaq but I've never found a place I could download it.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 6 жыл бұрын
Cutting back on the soundtrack was very common practice for western home computers. The developer quite often had no musical talent or had limited resources. So they'd just compose one track (if any) and leave it at that. Thank God the Japanese had higher standards.

A game almost universally called mediocre by both Amiga and Atari ST fans, each claiming thew other machine got the Better port =) I kind of like both of them though. Too early in either Machine's life to get a great use of the tricks that would later be discovered to make better games. Good attempt by Firebird through. Wow, the Amstrad CPC and C64 ports!. Ah, I wouldn't say it's as bad as a 2600 but it's sure not a favourite of mine.

The Amiga version is a disgrace. "Blood Money" - a similar game - is technically way better.

The Atari ST and Amiga look terrible. They could have done sooo much better.

Yep, they are pathetic especially when put up against the Amstrad CPC and C64 Ports.

It's more a case of them being made by a developer who wasn't particularly familiar with their capabilities and on a tight schedule than any deficiencies in the hardware. As others have mentioned, just look at Blood Money on either machine; it really shows that they could have made of the game given the chance.

Another timeless classic from irem Mark. I love the arcade version and stayed for hours playing in game rooms enjoying it. I love the level designs for it for its time. Glad you shared this one with us Mark. Anthony.
